Avaliação toxicopatológica de biopesticidas em roedores: revisão dos ensaios da fase 1. Infoteca-e

O propósito do presente trabalho é apresentar alguns cuidados a serem tomados durante a condução de testes toxicológicos para biopesticidas cujos organismos sejam bactérias ou fungos, como também apresentar sugestões quanto ao aprimoramento metodológico dos mesmos. Nesta publicação, portanto, são apresentados aspectos relativos ao controle de qualidade laboratorial e à avaliação do método usado para plaqueamento e crescimento dos AMC ? fungos e bactérias, com base na experiência do Laboratório de Ecotoxicologia e Biossegurança da Embrapa Meio Ambiente. Além disso, são tecidas considerações quanto ao significado da persistência do AMC no organismo animal.

Commercial Biological Control Agents Targeted Against Plant-Parasitic Root-knot Nematodes BABT

Root-knot nematodes are microscopic round worms, which cause severe agricultural losses. Their attacks affect the productivity by reducing the amount and the caliber of the fruits. Chemical control is widely used, but biological control appears to be a better solution, mainly using microorganisms to reduce the quantity of pests infecting crops. Biological control is developing gradually, and with time, more products are being marketed worldwide. They can be formulated with bacteria, viruses or with filamentous fungi, which can destroy and feed on phytoparasitic nematodes. Diversification strategies in the pesticide industry: from seeds to biopesticides Ciência Rural

ABSTRACT: The pesticide industry has undergone a diversification process led by six leading companies (Monsanto, Syngenta, Bayer, Dow, DuPont, BASF) that control roughly 68% of the world market. This growth, initiated in the second half of the 1990s, occurred through deals and acquisitions of companies from the seed and biopesticide markets. This paper analyzes these diversification strategies, which have involved a capital mobilization process based on the exploitation of economies of scope and management of complementary assets. This aims to minimize the risks of investment in consolidated markets as well as in new ones.

Evaluation of Botanical Mixtures for Insect Pests Management on Cowpea Plants JARTS

Studies were conducted at the Research Farm of the Institute for Agricultural Research, Zaria in 1999 and 2000 rainy seasons to evaluate the efficacy and synergistic activity of extracts mixtures from herbal landraces in reducing pests numbers on cowpea plants and ensuring high yield of grains. The extracts mixed in a ratio 10:10 % w/w included: cashew nutshell + garlic bulb; cashew nutshell + African pepper and garlic bulb + chilli pepper. The results indicated that all the herbal extract mixtures reduced the numbers of the tested insect pests (legume flower bud thrips, legume pod borer larvae and pod sucking bugs) and pod damage as well as increased grain yields by 4 - 5 times compared to the untreated control in the two years of investigation. Farmers’ Perceptions and Willingness to Pay for Metarhizium-based Biopesticide to Control Cotton Bollworms in Benin (West Africa) AgEcon

The study assesses farmers’ perceptions and willingness to pay for a biopesticide developed from Metarhizium anisopliae a fungi. A sample of 400 conventional and organic cotton producers was randomly selected in cotton producing zones in Benin and interviewed for their perceptions on the efficacy of the biopesticide and the likely prices they are willing to pay for the product to control a major pest like Helicoverpa armigera or cotton bollworm causing substantial crop losses. An econometric model (Logit) is used to identify factors highly likely to affect farmer’s willingness to purchase the product.
