A comparative ecophysiological study was carried out in September and November 2002 for two bivalves, Paphia rhomboides and Glycymeris glycymeris, which are significantly harvested in the Western Channel (French coast). Individual measurements of clearance and respiration rates were performed for both species, in several experimental conditions of temperature and phytoplankton concentrations. Those conditions were chosen to be in the range of those commonly observed in the subtidal area of the Western Channel. The mean value of clearance rate and oxygen consumption obtained from continuous data recording did not reveal any significant influence of temperature in the investigated range, but a significant difference between P rhomboides and G. glycymeris.... |

Abstract Mollusks are considered a nutritious source of food and their consumption has increased worldwide. However, their consumption, mainly of bivalves, has been considered responsible for numerous cases of foodborne diseases. This is related to their food intake, as they are filter-feeders and, consequently, bioaccumulate toxic compounds. High hydrostatic pressure (HHP) is recognized as an efficient technology to control pathogenic and deteriorating microorganisms, with low damage to the sensorial and nutritional properties of foodstuffs. This review addresses the use of HHP on bivalve mollusks, based on recent relevant studies in this field. |

The lagoon of Brusc located on the Mediterranean coast (VarFrance) is subjected to climatic and hydrologic particular conditions. The low values observed for nutrient into the sea water affect the evolution of phytoplankton. Thus chlorophyll concentration measured in the lagoon give an annual average of 0.42 mg. m-3 . Indigenous communities have actively managed their environments for millennia using a diversity of resource use and conservation strategies. Clam gardens, ancient rock-walled intertidal beach terraces, represent one example of an early mariculture technology that may have been used to improve food security and confer resilience to coupled human-ocean systems. A reference inventory of prehistoric marine mollusks from the Rio das Ostras region was created based on an excavation carried out at the Sambaqui da Tarioba shellmound. Patterns of richness and biogeography were studied, and the representativeness of bivalve and gastropod diversities found at this archaeological site were inferred. A total of 47 taxa belonging to 28 families, most of which from unconsolidated substrates, was identified. The shellmound species composition does not differ from the present-day composition. Le présent travail synthétise l'état des connaissances sur les vibrios, en particulier Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus et Vibrio vulnificus, bactéries pour lesquelles il existe une abondante littérature. The trophic ecology of two bivalves, the clam Callista chione and the cockle Glycymeris bimaculata was studied using environmental and biochemical variables of the suspended particulate matter and the sediment. Samples were collected from two shallow sites, Pag and Cetina, in the coastal oligotrophic Mediterranean Sea, during a 17 month period. The temporal variation of the particulate matter reflected a mixture between marine and terrestrial sources throughout the year, with a clear marine influence during summer and fall, and predominance of terrestrial inputs during spring and winter. BMAA (â-N-methylamino-L-alanine) is a non proteinogenic neurotoxic amino acid that has been associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Its analytical detection is widely debated thus the global production of BMAA by cyanobacteria is questioned. We first aimed at developing an analytical method allowing for highly selective identification of BMAA and isomers, using HILIC chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The common mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis was selected as unique biomonitor species to implement a regional monitoring programme, the CIESM Mediterranean Mussel Watch (MMW), in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. As of today, and upon standardization of the methodological approach, the MMW Network has been able to quantify Cs-137 levels in mussels from 60 coastal stations and to produce the first distribution map of this artificial radionuclide at the scale of the entire Mediterranean and Black Seas.
