Anesthetic induction and recovery time of Centropomus parallelus exposed to the essential oil of Aloysia triphylla Ciência Rural
Parodi,Thaylise Vey; Santos,Celina Alcoforado dos; Veronez,Alexandra; Gomes,Levy de Carvalho; Heinzmann,Berta Maria; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
ABSTRACT: This study analyzed the effectiveness of the essential oil of Aloysia triphylla (EOA) as an anesthetic and stress reducing agent in the transport of fat snook ( Centropomus parallelus ). Juveniles were exposed to different concentrations of EOA (seawater-adapted: 25-300μL L-1; freshwater-adapted: 200μL L-1) to identify the anesthetic induction and recovery times. In an additional experiment, seawater-adapted fat snook were transported in plastic bags with 10 or 20μL L-1 EOA for 6 or 24h. The increased concentration of EOA proportionally decreased the time required for anesthesia induction. Mortality was 30 and 70% in fat snook transported with 10 and 20µL L-1, respectively, 24h after transport. The addition of 20µL L-1 EOA significantly reduced...

Biochemical blood parameters: are they effective biomarkers of chronic toxicity? IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Fernandes, Conceição; Fontaínhas-Fernandes, A.; Coimbra, A.; Saavedra, M.J.; Salgado, Maria Antónia.
The use of biomarkers has become attractive and useful for monitoring environmental quality and health of fish inhabiting polluted ecosystems. Among them, plasmatic biochemical parameters could be a promissory indicator of fish health condition. The question that arises is if these parameters can be applied to chronic toxicity. In this study we investigated the use of plasmatic biochemical parameters as indicators of fish chronic exposure to metals. Mullets (Liza saliens), inhabiting a metal polluted habitat, a small coastal lagoon Esmoriz-Paramos (Northwest coast, Portugal), showed alterations of plasmatic parameters related with Cu and Zn bioaccumulation in tissues. The effect of metals chronic exposure in plasmatic parameters is scarcely studied and...

Contagens de eritrócitos e leucócitos em caprinos de diferentes raças, antes e depois de medicações anti-helmínticas. Repositório Alice
COSTA, C. A. F.; PANT, K. P..

Effect of humic acid on survival, ionoregulation and hematology of the silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen (Siluriformes: Heptapteridae), exposed to different pHs Rev. Bras. Zool.
Costa,Silvio T. da; Gressler,Luciane T.; Sutili,Fernando J.; Loebens,Luíza; Lazzari,Rafael; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
This study evaluates whether humic acid (HA; Aldrich) protects the silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824), against exposure to acidic pH. Survival, levels of Na+, Cl- and K+ plasma, hematocrit, hemoglobin and erythrocyte morphometry were measured. Fish were exposed to 0, 10, 25 and 50 mg L 1 HA at four pH levels: 3.8, 4.0, 4.2 and 7.0 up to 96 hours. None of the fish exposed to pH 3.8 survived for 96 hours into the experiment, and survival of fish subjected to pH 4.0 decreased when HA concentration increased. Plasma Na+ levels decreased when pH was acidic, with no influence of HA, while Cl- levels declined at low pH with increased HA concentration. The levels of K+ at pH 4.0 and 4.2 increased without HA. Hematocrit and hemoglobin...
