Changes in Mammalian Body Length over 175 Years—Adaptations to a Fragmented Landscape? Ecology and Society

The potential consequences of anthropogenic habitat fragmentation on species diversity and extinction have drawn considerable attention in recent decades. In many cases, traditional island biogeography theory has been applied to explain the observed patterns. Here, we propose that habitat fragmentation as a selective force can be traced in mammalian body length changes. By exploring historical sources, we are able to show that the body length of Danish mammals has altered over a period of 175 years, possibly in response to increasing habitat fragmentation. Concomitant Patterns in Avian and Mammalian Body Length Changes in Denmark Ecology and Society

We gathered length data on 61 Danish breeding birds from the past 200 years, and related the pattern of change to present body mass and other ecological parameters. Body mass was the only parameter significantly correlated with the rate of change, and the emerging pattern in the rate of change followed the island rule. That is, smaller species have become larger and vice versa, while the medium-sized species remain essentially unchanged. The suggested optimal body mass was around 85 g. Though orders of magnitude lower, the pattern in avian body size change was similar to that of Danish mammals. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are persistent organic pollutants that have been shown to affect fish life-history traits such as reproductive success, growth and survival. Medidas corporais de ovinos deslanados Santa Inês como indicadoras do peso vivo. Repositório Alice

Resumo: A altura da certelha (CER), altura da garupa (GAR), comprimento corporal (COM), perímetro torácico (PER) e peso vivo foram tomado em 70 borregos Santa Inês da Embrapa Caprinos, do desmame (84 dias) aos 11 meses de idade. Os dados foram agrupados em idades de 3-5 meses, 6-8 meses e 9-11 meses. As correlações entre CER, GAR, COM, PER e peso vivo foram elevadas, sendo de 0,88; 0,88, 0,92 e 0,90, respectivamente. Um bom estimador do peso vivo foi fornecido pela equação com medidas COM e PER (R2 = 0,9016 e 0.8963, respectivamente para fêmeas e machos). Com base nestes resultados, concluiu-se que o peso vivo de ovinos Santa Inês pode ser estimado no campo usando as medidas de comprimento corporal e perímetro torácico. Light fishing operations (LFO) in Ghana is concentrated in the three major coastal municipalities of Greater Accra (Tema), Central (Mumford & Elmina) and Western (Sekondi) Regions; these areas have the port facilities for landing of the catch by the larger inshore vessels that operate the purse seine fishery in Ghana and which predominantly operate the light attraction. Currently there are about 250 registered inshore vessels in the country whose sizes range between 39 – 60 feet , only a small fraction are actually working at the moment due to problems with spare parts and operations. Relationship between body mass and body length in capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) Biota Neotropica

As a part of a management program we captured 39 capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) in an agroecosystem at the east central region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil from March 2001 to May 2002. Average adult male body mass was 54.1 ± 8.05 kg, and average adult female body mass was 62.0 ± 12.03 kg. Average juvenile male body mass was 23.0 ± 8.28 kg, and average juvenile female body mass was 26.7 ± 5.86 kg. Males and females presented a significant variation in the allometric relation between body mass and body length. Body mass and body length had a high correlation for both adult males and adult females. These results from capybaras in agroecosystem might be relevant for further management programs.
