Alteration of the Reproductive Patterns in Drosophila melanogaster by Effects of High Concentrations of Boron on In Vitro Cultured Medium International Journal of Morphology
Espinoza-Navarro,O; Rodríguez,H; Rodríguez,M; Silva,E; Luque,A.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of boron (B) using as a biological model Drosophila malanogaster. Analizing specifically the responses over descendency to doses of 6,0 and 12 mg/L, comparing a control group which culture medium was prepared with water with boron concentrations of 0,6 mg/L, according to World Health Organization. The results show a significative alteration in the number of descendency from F1 to F3 and then a tendency to normalization in F4 and F5. Also a significant change in proportions between the males and females, with an acute effect on F1 and then a possible chronic effect from F2 to F5, increasing the proportion of females over males. This differences between genders are significant only until F4, on F5 these...

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and auxin associated with microelements in the development of cuttings of Varronia leucocephala AGRIAMBI
Fernandes,Mônica D. S. da S.; Morais,Marciana B. de; Mesquita-Oliveira,Francisco F.; Ulisses,Cláudia; Medeiros,José F. de; Albuquerque,Cynthia C. de.
ABSTRACT The plant Varronia leucocephala is widely used in Brazil for its therapeutic properties. However, a major problem for the seedlings is the low percentage of root formation. The objective of this study was to establish a rooting protocol for V. leucocephala cuttings, using phytoregulators and microelements associated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. The auxin indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) concentration of 1500 mg L-1 showed the best rooting percentage, and it is proposed associating the microelements zinc and boron with the highest IBA doses. Although an increase in the rooting percentage was observed in the presence of zinc, it was not the most suitable for improving the percentage of propagation. Consequently, association of arbuscular...

Boric acid in germination of pollen grains and fruit set of peach cultivars in subtropical region Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Souza,Filipe Bittencourt Machado de; Pio,Rafael; Tadeu,Maraísa Hellen; Zambon,Carolina Ruiz; Gregory,L. Reighard.
ABSTRACT The pollination and fertilization process directly affects the crop yield of peach. Previous studies have shown that some cultivars lack consistent cropping (yield variation) in subtropical regions. The application of boric acid at flowering can minimize this problem. This study quantified the germination of pollen grains and fruit set on 18 cultivars of peach in a subtropical region when treated with boric acid at bud. The initial spray treatments were three concentrations of boric acid (400 mgL-1, 800 mgL-1 and 1,200 mgL-1) plus a control treatment of water. Treatments were sprayed on the shoots when the flower buds were flower bud swelling on early maturing cultivars Aurora 2 and Doçura 2. There is a cultivar difference where 'Aurora 2' had a...

Boron as Testicular Toxicant in Mice (Mus domesticus) International Journal of Morphology
Bustos-Obregón,Eduardo; Olivares,Christopher.
It has been reported that boron causes changes in various systems, including the male reproductive system. Residents in some towns in northern Chile were consuming a few years ago in the drinking water 20 times more than the amount established as permissible limit by WHO. This study evaluates the effects in an animal model of high intake of boron on the testis. Boron was administered in the drinking water. Twenty male mice (Mus domesticus), sexually mature, were used, divided into 2 groups: the experimental group was given Boron at a dose of 12 mg/L, and the control group 0.6 mg/L, for 42 days. Sections of testis were obtained for: HE staining (Morphometry and Histopathology), Immunohistochemistry (Cox-2), Mallory and Picrosirious stain (evaluation of...

Boron dynamics related to fruit growth and seed production in kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa, cv. Hayward) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Sotomayor,Carlos; Norambuena,Paulina; Ruiz,Rafael.
The effect of foliar boron treatments on fruit growth and seed development in Actinidia deliciosa, cv. Hayward, was studied. The distal leaves (BH) or fowers (BF) of a shoot were sprayed with 500 mg L-1 boric acid during the fowering period. The mobility of boron from the leaves to the fowers through the phloem was determined by spraying only the leaves. From 0 to 96 h after treatment, leaves and fowers were sampled and total boron was assessed. At harvest time, fruit weight and diameter plus seed weight and number were measured for the different treatments. The weight of fruits growing from shoots with boron-treated leaves were 14.1% higher than the control, while the weight of fruits derived from boron-treated fowers was 17% higher than that of fruits...

Boron fertilizing management on fruit production and quality of mango cv. Palmer in semiarid Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Oldoni,Fernanda Campos Alencar; Lima,Augusto Miguel Nascimento; Cavalcante,Ítalo Herbert Lucena; Sousa,Karla dos Santos Melo de; Carneiro,Marcio Alves; Carvalho,Itamara Rayanny Bessa de.
Abstract Adequate fertilizing management is crucial to reach high mango yields that demand a well-defined fertilizer management, including micronutrient such as boron which management is more difficult due to the narrow range between deficiency and toxicity. This way, an experiment was carried out to evaluate the fruit production and quality of mango cv. Palmer as a function of boron fertilizing management in Brazilian semiarid. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with six treatments (strategies for boron fertilizing), as follows: T1 = five sprays with H3BO3 (two first at 0.3% and three at 0.2%); T2 = five sprays with H3BO3 (two first at 0.3% and three at 0.4%); T3 = five sprays with H3BO3 (two first at 0.3% and three at 0.6%); T4 = two...

Boron supplementation in broiler diets Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Fassani,EJ; Bertechini,AG; Brito,JAG; Kato,RK; Fialho,ET; Geraldo,A.
Boron supplementation in broiler feed is not a routine practice. However, some reports suggest a positive effect of boron on performance. This study assessed the effects of boron supplementation on broiler performance. Diets were based on maize and soybean meal, using boric acid P.A. as boron source. Six supplementation levels (0, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 ppm) were evaluated using 1,440 one-day old males housed at a density of 30 chickens in each of 48 experimental plots of 3m². A completely randomized block design was used with 8 replicates. Feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion were assessed in the periods from 1 to 7 days, 1 to 21 days and 1 to 42 days of age, and viability was evaluated for the total 42-day rearing period. No performance variable...

Boron (B) is a low mobility plant micronutrient whose molecular mechanisms of absorption and translocation are still controversial. Many factors are involved in tolerance to Boron excess or deficiency. Recently, the first protein linked to boron transport in biological systems, BOR1, was characterized in Arabidopsis thaliana. This protein is involved in boron xylem loading and is similar to bicarbonate transporters found in animals. There are indications that BOR1 is a member of a conserved protein family in plants. In this work, FORESTS database was used to identify sequences similar to this protein family, looking for a probable BOR1 homolog in eucalypt. We found five consensus sequences similar to BOR1; three of them were then used in multiple alignment...

Dynamic storage of glacial CO2 in the Atlantic Ocean revealed by boron [CO32-] and pH records ArchiMer
Chalk, T. B.; Foster, G. L.; Wilson, P. A..
The origin and carbon content of the deep water mass that fills the North Atlantic Basin, either Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) or North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) is suggested to influence the partitioning of CO2 between the ocean and atmosphere on glacial-interglacial timescales. Fluctuations in the strength of Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) have also been shown to play a key role in global and regional climate change on timescales from annual to millennial. The North Atlantic is an important and well-studied ocean basin but many proxy records tracing ocean circulation in this region over the last glacial cycle are challenging to interpret. Here we present new B/Ca-[CO32-] and boron isotope-pH data from sites spanning the North...

Expression analysis of cell wall assembly and remodelling-related genes in Arabidopsis roots subjected to boron stress and brassinosteroid at different developmental stages Acta Botanica
İşkil,Rabia; Surgun-Acar,Yonca.
ABSTRACT Plant cell walls are affected by many biotic and abiotic stress conditions. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of 24-Epibrassinolide (EBL) on some cell wall-related genes in root tissue of five- and ten-week-old Arabidopsis thaliana plants exposed to boron (B) deficiency (0 µM) or toxicity (3000 µM) at the transcriptional level. Expressions of the genes that encode cellulose synthase (CESA1, CESA4, CESA6 and CESA8), cellulose synthase-like (CSLB5), expansin (EXPA5, EXPA8 and EXPA14) and cell wall protein (SEB1) decreased under conditions of B deficiency and toxicity. EBL treatments, in general, led the expressions of these genes to reduce significantly. Expressions of xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolase genes (XTH21 and XTH23)...

Fenologics characteristics of the ‘Siciliano’ lemon tree on two rootstocks influenced by liming and boron addition BABT
Grassi Filho,Hélio; Dechen,Antonio Roque; Torquato,Elano Marçal; Santos,Carlos Henrique dos.
The current study was developed with disturbed samples of an Oxisol, in which ‘Siciliano’ lemon trees seedlings (C. limon) were grafted on sour orange tree (C. aurantium) and rangpur lime tree (C. limonia). The experiment consisted of three basis saturation levels (50, 70 and 90 percent) and three boron doses (0.5; 1.5 and 4.5 mg dm-3) in the planting with 3x3x2 factorial experimental design with four replications. Mineral composition of the "Siciliano" lemon leaves as well as root system development in sour orange tree were higher than the rangpur lime tree. There was no effect in the interaction basis saturarion level and the boron doses for any of the evaluated parameters.
