The paper presents the results of a general survey of the hydroid fauna of the coastal region of the São Sebastião Channel, São Paulo State, Brazil. Intensive collecting in the intertidal and infralittoral zones, from 1984 to 1992, led to the discovery of many species, some of which are small and inconspicuous. Out of 59 species of hydroids (17 athecate and 42 thecate) described and illustrated, three are new records for the Atlantic Ocean, six for the western South Atlantic, and 21 for the Brazilian coast. The medusa stage of Asyncoryne ryniensis and the cnidome of 24 species are described for the first time. The paper also contains a synopsis of the hydroids recorded from the Brazilian coast, the list now including 107 species. Pseudostenotele... |

Hydroid distribution patterns along a horizontal ecocline in the Rio Formoso/Rio Ariquindá/Rio Porto Alegre system, a small and seasonally poikilohaline estuary on the tropical northeast coast of Brazil, were investigated. Collecting was undertaken during the dry season, in November 1993, by diving (with and without SCUBA). Nine stations were sampled on a transect extending from a reef outside the river mouth to a mangrove system at the upper end of the estuary. Four major regions were distinguished along the ecocline based on numerical analyses of hydroid species/station location data: (1) nearshore reef — a sandstone ledge outside the entrance of the estuary; (2) river mouth — a sandy and shelly flood-tidal delta area inside the entrance of the Rio... |

The paper analyses the effects of rural income determinants, in particular of human capital and physical capital. Besides the earnings equation estimated for persons occupied in agriculture, the paper also analyzes earnings regressions for persons occupied in the industry and service sectors. The results show that physical capital is the main determinant of earnings in Brazilian agriculture, but schooling is the most important determinant of earnings for persons occupied in rural non-farm activities and for all persons living in rural areas. |

This work presents the results of the estimation of a soybean exportation function for Brazil, in the period between 1980 and 2001. The dynamics of the exportations were specifically analysed with focus on the 90s, due to the higher degree of economic opening of that decade, and the impacts of the fluctuating exchange rate over the determinants of the exports of this sector. The model proposed to estimate the exportation fuction of the soybeans was the Error Correction Model, which fit well to the variables that were specified and returned the expected relationships among the estimated parameters. The elasticities obtained were high and significant, which indicated that the exports react to variations in external price, internal price and internal revenue.... |

ABSTRACT: In March 2010, 44 specimens of Astyanax altiparanae Garutti & Britski, 2000, commonly known as "lambari do rabo amarelo", collected from the Peixe river in the state of São Paulo, Brazil were analyzed. Out of these 44 fishes, 38 had at least one species of metazoan parasite. Fifteen metazoan parasites species were collected and identified: Urocleidoides trinidadensis , Diaphorocleidus kabatai , Diaphorocleidus orthodusus, Diaphorocleidus sp., Urocleidoides sp., Trinibaculum altiparanae , Gyrodactylus sp., Jainus hexops, Contracaecum sp., Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) inopinatus, Vaigamus sp., Amplexibranchius bryconis, Ergasilus sp., Zonocotyloides haroltravassossi and Henneguya sp. Six species of parasites presented a prevalence of over... |

This article analyzes the effect of the aging and the retirements in the Brazilian rural scene, which is a question of most importance for the current days, since the relative participation of the aging group in the total set of the Brazilian population is increasing. Thus, there exists a concern with the future of the Social Security sot that it must pass through reforms. Hence, the objective of this paper is to raise elements for the discussion on the importance of the social security in the agricultural sector, since it passes through significant demographic changes. With a sufficiently fragmented history, since the years of the Empire, the Social Security has been extending several segments of society, being one of the most important forms of inclusion... |

ABSTRACT Pharmacists and their pharmacies have been evolving in their roles as health promoters in Brazil. Some examples are the recent legislation reaffirming the role of Brazilian pharmacies as health institutions, rather than having only a commercial profile, giving greater clarity to pharmacists about their roles as health care providers. This evolution came with the recognition that is already seen in other developed countries, confirming the need for the pharmacist as a health promoter, and not simply a dispenser of drugs in society. This study has obtained the profile and activities of community pharmacists, as well as the quality indicators of private community pharmacies throughout the State of Paraná through the application of an online survey... |

An account is given of Sertularia vervoorti spec. nov., a small leptothecate species collected in coastal waters of southeastern Brazil. Specimens were found on brown algae, collected at depths of 15-20 m on the inner continental shelf off Espírito Santo state. This hydroid resembles Sertularia tumida Allman, 1877, S. linealis Warren, 1908, and S. longa Millard, 1958, but differs from these and other species of the genus in having an unusual bulge around the hydrothecal wall just distal to its insertion with the hydrocaulus. The colony form of S. vervoorti is more compact than in these species, and gonothecae are annulated rather than smooth as in S. linealis and S. longa. |

ABSTRACT Transmissivity is an important hydraulic parameter to determine the amount of water passed horizontally across a given saturated thickness of an aquifer. The techniques to quantify this parameter, such as grain size analyses or pumping tests, can have limitations of time/spatial scale, viability, or economically. One technique that can be used, but little adopted, is the capture zone analysis. In this paper, capture zone analytical equations were used to estimate transmissivity values in order to verify the effectiveness of this methodology as alternative in situations where other traditional methods present implementation difficulties. The results were compared with field data estimated by aquifer tests conducted in the same region. A sensitivity... |
