Analyzing Growth Curves of Turkeys Reared in Different Breeding Systems (Intensive and Free-Range) with some Nonlinear Models Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Sogut,B; Celik,S; Ayasan,T; Inci,H.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to identify the growth curve of live weight of turkeys reared in different systems (intensive and free- range) with the best mathematical model. To achieve this goal, the live weight of male and female turkeys (Large White) reared for 0-18 weeks were used. Logistic, Gompertz, Von Bertalanffy, and Gauss were used to determine the best model for the turkeys. In comparison of the models, values of Coefficient of Determination (R2), Mean Squares of Error (MSE) and Model Efficiency (ME) were used. In Von Bertalanffy model, the coefficient of determinations for males and females were found as 0.9974 and 0.99915 in intensive system and 0.9794 and 0.9804 in Free-Range system, respectively. As a result of this study, because...

Biologia floral e reprodutiva de Casearia grandiflora Camb. (Flacourtiaceae) Rev. Bras. Bot.

Breeding system and pollination of Pleroma trichopodum DC. (Melastomataceae): a potential species for the restoration of Atlantic Forest in southern Brazil Acta Botanica
Malucelli,Tiago Simões; Maia,Fabiano Rodrigo; Varassin,Isabela Galarda.
ABSTRACT Plant-pollinator interactions and their reproductive implications are of central importance to the organization of plant populations and communities in restoration areas. We studied the breeding system and flower visitors of Pleroma trichopodum, a pioneer species of the Atlantic Forest. We attempted to answer three questions: (1) Is P. trichopodum dependent on pollinators and mates for reproduction? (2) What are the pollinators of P. trichopodum? (3) Do tree flower-density and flowering-tree density of P. trichopodum enhance the visitation rate of focal trees and their flowers? We tested the breeding system through pollination treatments. We performed focal observations on 10 trees and analyzed the relationship between tree and flower visitation...

Breeding system and related floral features under natural and experimental conditions of Passiflora suberosa (Passifloraceae) Boletín de la Sociedad
Amela García,María Teresa.
The breeding system, the floral characteristics and the visitors of the polymorphic Passiflora suberosa were studied in different natural populations of Corrientes and Misiones provinces, and at a partially-opened greenhouse in Buenos Aires. The different reproductive indexes calculated evidenced that, although it is highly self-compatible, autogamy is partial. The reproductive efficiency was similar in the field and in the greenhouse. The major relative reproductive success obtained by induced self-pollination suggests that the reproductive output may be improved with the help of pollinations, either natural or artificial. Although the single flower and the blooming are inconspicuous, the floral characters may be involved in wasps attraction. The scarcity...

Floral biology and pollination in Brazil: history and possibilities Acta Botanica
Oliveira,Paulo Eugênio; Rech,André Rodrigo.
ABSTRACT Pollination research in Brazil virtually started with Fritz Muller, whose insights supported Darwin's evolutionary theory. Pollination systems of Brazilian plants were studied mainly by travelling researchers until early last century when native or resident geneticists began to use floral biology information to deal with crop acclimatization and breeding, later applying similar experiments and techniques to investigate native plants. Bee geneticists studied common pollinators of crops, such as coffee and Citrus, and even the introduction of feral African honeybees, despite their associated problems, stimulated pollination research. Geneticists attracted Dobzhansky to Brazil, where his research on tree distribution in the Brazilian Amazon...

Floral visitors and reproductive strategies in five melittophilous species of Bignoniaceae in Southeastern Brazil BABT
Yanagizawa,Yuriko A. N. Pinto; Maimoni-Rodella,Rita de Cassia Sindrônia.
In order to evaluate the pollination strategies of Bignoniaceae, the floral biology and the floral visitors in five species, three cerrado shrubs (Arrabidaea brachypoda (DC.) Bor., Jacaranda decurrens Cham., and Jacaranda oxyphylla Cham.), and two lianas from the border of a semideciduous seasonal forest (Arrabidaea samydoides (Cham.) Sandw., and Arrabidaea triplinervia H. Baill.) were studied in Botucatu, São Paulo State, Southeastern Brazil. The flowering periods were partially overlapping, especially between species in the same habitat. All the five species were functionally allogamous, melittophilous, nototribic and mainly pollinated by long tongued large bees. Some medium-sized and small pollen-foraging bees were occasional legitimate visitors,...

Intrafloral phenology of Trifolium polymorphum Poir. (Leguminosae) aerial flowers and reproductive implications Acta Botanica
Speroni,Gabriela; Izaguirre,Primavera; Bernardello,Gabriel; Franco,Jorge.
Trifolium polymorphum is an amphicarpic species that grows in Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Chile. Underground flowers are cleistogamous, obligately autogamous and morphologically highly modified in structure and function. Aerial flowers are chasmogamous, and as mentioned in earlier literature, either allogamous or autogamous. The aim of this study is to identify flower characteristics that facilitate or prevent autogamous or allogamous processes. Floral phenology stages are thus studied in correlation with estimated models of aerial flower development, pollen viability and stigmatic receptivity in three Uruguayan T. polymorphum populations. Flower longevity and development (length, width, and anther-stigma distance), anthesis and anther...

Late-acting self-incompatibility in Capparis retusa (Capparaceae), a species of Chaco woodland in NE Argentina Rev. Bras. Bot.
BIANCHI,MARTA B.; GIBBS,PETER E..
The reproductive biology of Capparis retusa was studied by means of controlled pollination experiments and fluorescence microscopy observations of post-pollination events. Self-pollinated flowers mostly failed to form fruits despite the fact that self-pollen tubes grew to the ovary and penetrated ovules within 24 h. Since embryo development to globular stage was observed in some self-fertilized ovules it was concluded that control of self-fertilization in this species occurs by some kind of post-zygotic mechanism.

Nothophytophthora gen. nov., a new sister genus of Phytophthora from natural and semi-natural ecosystems Naturalis
Jung, T.; Scanu, B.; Bakonyi, J.; Seress, D.; Kovács, G.M.; Durán, A.; Sanfuentes von Stowasser, E.; Schena, L.; Mosca, S.; Thu, P.Q.; Nguyen, C.M.; Fajardo, , S.; González, M.; Pérez-Sierra, A.; Rees, H.; Cravador, A.; Maia, C.; Horta Jung, M..
During various surveys of Phytophthora diversity in Europe, Chile and Vietnam slow growing oomycete isolates were obtained from rhizosphere soil samples and small streams in natural and planted forest stands. Phylogenetic analyses of sequences from the nuclear ITS, LSU, β-tubulin and HSP90 loci and the mitochondrial cox1 and NADH1 genes revealed they belong to six new species of a new genus, officially described here as Nothophytophthora gen. nov., which clustered as sister group to Phytophthora. Nothophytophthora species share numerous morphological characters with Phytophthora: persistent (all Nothophytophthora spp.) and caducous (N. caduca, N. chlamydospora, N. valdiviana, N. vietnamensis) sporangia with variable shapes, internal differentiation of...

Pollination and breeding system in Adesmia bijuga Phil. (Fabaceae), a critically endangered species in Central Chile Gayana Botánica
GÓMEZ P,PERSY; LILLO,DIANA; GONZÁLEZ,ALEJANDRA V.
Adesmia bijuga Phil. is an endemic shrub in central Chile, classified as a critically endangered species of plant. After more than 100 years since its original description by R. A. Philippi (1884), the species was rediscovered exclusively in two locations of the Maule Region. One of them, Fundo San Pedro-Las Cañas, is close to extinction with a low number of shrubs, occurring in a disturbed habitat due to plantations of Pinus radiata. This study examined the pollination biology and breeding system of A. bijuga in order to explain their small number of shrubs. We estimated composition of pollinator species attracted to flowers and visitation rates. In order to describe its breeding system in A. bijuga we used manipulated treatments to estimate autonomous...

Pollination biology of Paliavana tenuiflora (Gesneriaceae: Sinningeae) in Northeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Ferreira,Patrícia Alves; Viana,Blandina Felipe.
In this study the floral biology, breeding system, visitors and pollinators of Paliavana tenuiflora were analyzed in campos rupestres in the Chapada Diamantina, Mucugê, Bahia, Brazil. Paliavana tenuiflora is a shrub with blue-violet, bell-shaped flowers, with anthesis at 11:00 h; the flowers last about six days. Large amounts of nectar are produced (volume average 15.5µL, concentration 22.7% and sugar content 5.0 mg mL-1). The amount of nectar is not related to the time of day, but concentration varied with volume. The species is self-compatible, but fruit set depends on pollinators. Although nectar is available by day and night, flowers of P. tenuiflora fit the bee pollination syndrome, and are actually pollinated by Bombusbrevivillus. However, the...
