A population facing climate change: joint influences of Allee effects and environmental boundary geometry Inra

As a result of climate change, many populations have to modify their range to follow the suitable areas—their “climate envelope”—often risking extinction. During this migration process, they may face absolute boundaries to dispersal because of external environmental factors. Consequently, not only the position, but also the shape of the climate envelope can be modified. We use a reaction-diffusion model to analyse the effects on population persistence of simultaneous changes in the position and shape of the climate envelope. When the growth term is of logistic type, we show that extinction and persistence are principally conditioned by the species mobility and the speed of climate change, but not by the shape of the climate envelope. Adapting grapevine varieties to climate change: can the genetic variability meet the challenge? Inra

Climate change is expected to advance grapevine phenological stages. Using a degree-days model, we were able to simulate dates of budbreak, flowering and véraison for Riesling and Gewurztraminer, two winegrape varieties grown in Alsace, France. Projected daily temperatures were calculated for the Colmar meteorological station with the ARPEGE-Climat general circulation model using three distinct greenhouse gas emissions scenarios. Compared with its timing in 1976-2008, véraison is predicted to advance by up to 23 days and mean temperatures during the 35 days following véraison are projected to increase by more than 7°C by the end of the twenty-first century for both varieties. Analysing the time-course variation of apple and pear tree dates of flowering stages in the global warming context Inra

Over the last 40 years, perceptible advances in dates of flowering stages have been observed in apple and pear trees growing in three cropping areas in France and one in Switzerland. The time-course variation of dates of flowering stages was established for eight chronological sequences. Our aim was to propose a statistical modelling framework for such sequences with the objective of characterizing the relationship between flowering advances in fruit trees and global warming. In this study we aimed to combine knowledge of the ecophysiology and genetics of European beech to assess the potential of this species to adapt to environmental change. Climate change mitigation options and directed technical change: a decentralized equilibrium analysis Inra

The paper considers a growth model with climate change and three R&D sectors dedicated to energy, backstop and CCS(Carbon Capture and Storage) efficiency. First, we characterize the set of decentralized equilibria: to each vector of public tools, a carbon tax and a subsidy to each R&D sector, is associated a particular equilibrium. Second, we solve the first-best optimum problem and we implement it by computing the vector of optimal tools. Finally, we illustrate the theoretical modelusing some calibrated functional specifications. In particular, we investigate the effects of various combinations of public policies (including the optimal ones) by determining the deviation of each corresponding equilibrium from the "laisser-faire" benchmark.

Direct impacts of recent climate warming on insect populations Inra

Effects of recent climate change have already been detected in many species, and, in particular, in insects. The present paper reviews the key impacts of global warming on insect development and dispersal. The effects of climate change appear to be much more complex than a simple linear response to an average increase in temperature. They can differ between seasons and bioclimatic regions. Earlier flight periods, enhanced winter survival and acceleration of development rates are the major insect responses. Differential response of insects and hosts to warming up might also lead to disruption of their phenological synchrony, but adaptive genetic processes are likely to quickly restore this synchrony. Parecería que el cambio climático es el tema de actualidad. Está en el léxico popular y en las publicidades de las grandes corporaciones. “La crisis ambiental global ha sido reconocida por todos los líderes mundiales, por los gobiernos y también por el ciudadano común.”1 Hay una necesidad de discutirlo y un llamado a movilizar acciones concretas. Ese tendería a ser un debate sin identidades ideológicas, con un objetivo: reducir y posteriormente detener el cambio climático. La cuestión, no obstante, plantea una dicotomía entre las izquierdas y la derecha y los modelos tradicionales de pensar el mundo: la producción, el uso y la distribución de los recursos y la energía.

El término extractivismo se ha ido alojando en las discusiones acerca del manejo de los recursos naturales en América Latina, adquiriendo un contenido político que alude sobre todo a la imagen negativa que expresa la explotación minera e hidrocarburífera por sus efectos en el medio ambiente, el poco impacto en cambiar la desigualdad y la profundización de economías primario exportadoras. Este número de Ecuador Debate, aborda los problemas y perspectivas del extractivismo a través de un conjunto de análisis y esfuerzos interpretativos que trascienden opiniones de naturaleza ideológica y política, incorporando temas complementarios a los que ya fueron expuestos en el número 79 de la revista dedicado en esa ocasión a los conflictos del extractivismo.
