Betrequia ocellata Oldroyd (Diptera, Tabanidae, Rhinomyzini) blood feeding on Caiman crocodilus (Linnaeus) (Crocodylia, Alligatoridae) in Manaus, Brazil Zoologia
Henriques,Augusto Loureiro; Ferreira,Ruth Leila Menezes; Vidal,João Ferreira; Rafael,José Albertino.
In Central Amazonia the tabanid Betrequia ocellala Oldroyd, 1970 was recorded for the first time blood feeding on caimans during an experiment in September/October 1996 at Ducke Reserve, Manaus, Brazil. Among different available hosts (Caiman, horse, duck and human) B. ocellata was observed only on Caiman crocodilus (Linnaeus, 1758), suggesting specific blood feeding on crocodilians. The adult flight season, diurnal blood feeding period and flight stratification are presented. Other tabanid species feeding or landing on caimans are also recorded.

Comparative analysis of cranial suture complexity in the genus Caiman (Crocodylia, alligatoridae) BJB
MONTEIRO,L. R.; LESSA,L. G..
The variation in degrees of interdigitation (complexity) in cranial sutures among species of Caiman in different skull regions was studied by fractal analysis. Our findings show that there is a small species effect in the fractal dimension of cranial sutures, but most variation is accounted for by regional differentiation within the skull. There is also a significant interaction between species and cranial regions. The braincase sutures show higher fractal dimension than the facial skull sutures for all three species. The fractal dimension of nasal-maxilla suture is larger in Caiman latirostris than in the other species. The braincase sutures show higher fractal dimensions in C. sclerops than in the other species. The results suggest that different regions...

Efeito da caça no movimento e na área de uso dos jacarés, Pantanal Sul. Infoteca-e
CAMPOS, Z.; COUTINHO, M.; MOURÃO, G.; MAGNUSSON, W..

Observations on the thermal selection of the pantanal caiman (Caiman crocodilus yacare) hatchlings (Crocodylia: Alligatoridae) BJB
PINHEIRO,M. S.; ANDREOTTI E SILVA,R.; SANTOS,S. A..
Three options of water temperatures in a thermal gradient that changed from 22 to 35°C were offered to Pantanal caiman (Caiman croocodilus yacare) hatchlings. Animals from two nests were submitted to temperatures during 19 days (Nest 1 - 20 caimans caught in the nature hours after hatching), corresponding to 1 to 7 observations periods, and 13 days (Nest 2 - 20 animals obtained by artificial incubation) relative to observation period 8. Caimans remain fasting during experimental period. Hatchlings were allocated in a enclosure containing three styrofoam boxes (120 L) disposed side by side enclosed by wire netting and filled with water to the top. Thus, the animals were free to access the boxes, which temperatures were changed at the end of each observation...

Parentage test in broad-snouted caimans (Caiman latirostris, Crocodylidae) using microsatellite DNA. Repositório Alice
ZUCOLOTO, R. B.; VERDADE, L. M.; VILLELA, P. M. S.; REGITANO, L. C. de A.; COUTINHO, L. L..
In this study, microsatellite markers, developed for Alligator mississipiensis and Caiman latirostris, were used to assess parentage among individuals from the captive colony of Caiman latirostris at the University of São Paulo, in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil. Many of the females in the colony were full siblings, which made maternal identification difficult due to genotypic similarity. Even so, the most likely mother could be identified unambiguously among offspring in most of the clutches studied. Two non-parental females displayed maternal behavior which would have misled managers in assigning maternity based on behavior alone. This set of variable loci demonstrates the utility of parentage testing in captive propagation programs.

Population genetic structure in Paleosuchus palpebrosus: a novel Management Unit from the Brazilian Cerrado biome Repositório Alice
MUNIZ, F.; CAMPOS, Z.; POLO, E.; FARIAS, I.; HRBEK, T.; HERNÁNDEZ-RANGEL, S..
To investigate the spatial distribution of the genetic diversity of widely distributed species is important to prevent that genetically structured groups are neglected from the conservation point of view. In a previous study, we identified four conservation units of Paleosuchus palpebrosus, three Evolutionarily Significant Units (ESUs): 'Amazon'(A), 'Madeira-Bolivia' (MB) and 'Pantanal' (P), and two Management Units (MU) within MB: 'Madeira' (M) and 'Bolivia' (B). In this study, we expanded sampling geographically and sequenced the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene from 151 additional individuals, totaling 357 sequences, aiming the investigation of additional genetically structured lineages of the P. palpebrosus species complex and their genealogical...

Size structure and sex ratio of dwarf caiman in the Serra Amolar, Pantanal, Brazil. Repositório Alice
CAMPOS, Z. M. da S.; COUTINHO, M. E.; ABERCROMBIE, C..
Paleosuchus palpebrosus is one of five caiman species that occur in Brazil. With a maximum length of about 1.6 m (Medem, 1981), it is among the smallest crocodilians in the world. P. palpebrosus has a highly ossified skin and, although some illegal hides have been confiscated in Amazon (Rebelo & Magnunsson, 1983), the species is of negligible commercial value. On the other hand, it is possible that some populations might be threatened by habitat modification. This dwarf caiman apparently has strict habitat requirements in central Amazonia, where it is largely restricted to flooded forests along the margins of large rivers and lakes (Magnusson, 1985). Nevertheless, the species can be encountered from Amazonia southward through the drainages of the Sao...

SNPs marker toolbox for molecular identification of nominal and candidate species of the genus Paleosuchus. Repositório Alice
BRANDÃO, M. da S.; MUNIZ, F.; HERNÁNDEZ-RANGEL, S.; CAMPOS, Z.; FARIAS, I.; HRBEK, T..
Recent studies have identified the existence of species complexes in crocodilians, including in the New World Caimaninae. Both species of the genus Paleosuchus are species complexes with three or four species subsumed under the P. palpebrosus epithet and two under the P. trigonatus epithet. From the conservation point of view, it is important to recognize the evolutionary and ecological uniqueness of these lineages, regardless of the taxonomic status they may receive. Candidate species of the genus Paleosuchus have not yet been formally described and therefore do not have diagnostic morphological characters that would allow their identification in nature. This problem motivated us to develop a SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms) toolkit that enables...

The effect of dam construction on the movement of dwarf caimans, Paleosuchus trigonatus and Paleosuchus palpebrosus, in Brazilian Amazonia. Repositório Alice
CAMPOS, Z.; MOURAO, G.; MAGNUSSON, W. E..
Run-of-the-river hydroelectric dams cause changes in seasonal inundation of the floodplains, and this may cause displacement of semi-aquatic vertebrates present before dam construction. This study evaluated the movement of crocodilians before and after the filling of the Santo Antonio hydroelectric reservoir on the Madeira River in the Brazilian Amazon, which occurred in November 2011. We radio-tracked four adult male Paleosuchus palpebrosus and four adult male Paleosuchus trigonatus before and after the formation of the reservoir between 2011 and 2013. The home ranges of the P. palpebrosus varied from < 1 km2 to 91 km2 and the home ranges of the P. trigonatus varied from < 1km2 to 5 km2 . The species responded differently to time since filling and...

Thermic Variation in Incubation and Development of Pantanal Caiman (Caiman crocodilus yacare) (Daudin, 1802) Kept in Metabolic Box BABT
Miranda,Maristela Parra; Moraes,Gentil Vanini de; Martins,Elias Nunes; Maia,Luis Carlos Pinto; Barbosa,Orlando Rus.
Thirty-two eggs of Pantanal caiman (Caiman crocodilus yacare) (Daudin, 1802) were incubated at 30° C. After 20 days of incubation at 30° C, the remaining eggs were distributed in the following way: seven at 34° C, seven at 32° C, six at 30° C and six at 28° C. At 32° C and 34° C a 100% hatchability was obtained while at 30° C 83.3% and at 28° C 66.6%. After hatching, the animals were kept for 120 days at the same temperature of their final incubation. Weight (g) control and morphometric (cm) analysis were carried out. The statistic design was totally randomized and the data were treated by regression analysis showing a quadratic behavior ( p<0.05). It was found that weight, total length (TTL), tail length (TL), snout- vent length (SVL), head length...

Where are the black caimans, Melanosuchus niger (Crocodylia: Alligatoridae), in the Xingu River basin, Brazil? Repositório Alice
CAMPOS, Z. M. da S.; MUNIZ, F.; MAGNUSSON, W. E..
The black caiman, Melanosuchus niger (Spix, 1825), which can reach a length of 6 meters (Medem, 1981), was considered endangered due to intense hunting for its skin in the 1970s (Rebelo and Magnusson, 1983), but densities in several areas have recovered after the implementation of environmental laws and conservation programs (Da Silveira and Thorbjarnason, 1999), as well as changes in contraband routes.
