Long-term time series in Calanus finmarchicus abundance - A question of space? ArchiMer
Planque, Benjamin; Ibanez, F.
Year-to-year changes in abundance of the copepod Calanus finmarchicus in the North Atlantic are studied by means of the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR). Using data collected during the years 1962 to 1974, the spatial heterogeneity of long-term trends is studied by numerical analysis: Mantel test, Mantel correlogram, and spatio-temporal clustering. Results reveal that (1) interannual changes of C. finmarchicus abundance are spatially autocorrelated; (2) the spatial structures have a radius varying between 400 and 1100 km; and (3) there is a high variability in the annual changes observed between the different zones detected by clustering. These results show that observations made in the Northeast Atlantic cannot be extrapolated to the whole North...

Modelling secondary production in the Norwegian Sea with a fully coupled physical/primary production/individual-based Calanus finmarchicus model system ArchiMer
Hjøllo, Solfrid Sætre; Huse, Geir; Skogen, Morten D.; Melle, Webjørn.
The copepod Calanus finmarchicus is the dominant species of the meso-zooplankton in the Norwegian Sea, and constitutes an important link between the phytoplankton and the higher trophic levels in the Norwegian Sea food chain. An individual-based model for C. finmarchicus, based on super-individuals and evolving traits for behaviour, stages, etc., is two-way coupled to the NORWegian ECOlogical Model system (NORWECOM). One year of modelled C. finmarchicus spatial distribution, production and biomass are found to represent observations reasonably well. High C. finmarchicus abundance is found along the Norwegian shelf-break in the early summer, while the overwintering population is found along the slope and in the deeper Norwegian Sea basins. The timing of the...

Time series analysis of interrupted long-term data set (1961-1991) of zooplankton abundance in Gulf of Maine (northern Atlantic, USA) ArchiMer
Licandro, P; Conversi, A; Ibanez, F; Jossi, J.
The main interannual and seasonal signals have been extracted from a multi-decadal data set of zooplankton collected with the Continuous Plankton Recorder in the Gulf of Maine, from January 1961 to December 1991. The monthly abundances of seven species or genera of copepods representing the dominant biomass in the area were considered. The presence of a large consecutive gap (35 months) prevented the use of statistical methods for the prediction of missing data. The eigen-vector filtering (EVF) method was then used on the original time series, while retaining the missing values. For each zooplankton taxon, two principal modes of variability (F-1 and F-2) were extracted, representing the interannual and seasonal variations, respectively. Results of EVF...
