Alteração no potencial osmótico e teor de carboidratos solúveis em plantas jovens de lobeira (Solanum lycocarpum St.-Hil.) em resposta ao estresse hídrico Rev. Bras. Bot.

Solanum lycocarpum é uma espécie típica da vegetação do cerrado brasileiro e tem demonstrado resistência à seca que ocorre em seu ambiente. O ajustamento osmótico é um decréscimo do potencial osmótico causado pelo acúmulo de solutos nas células, o qual mantém o gradiente de potencial hídrico e, ao mesmo tempo, a turgescência necessária ao crescimento celular. A influência do estresse hídrico no potencial osmótico e no teor de carboidratos solúveis foi investigada neste trabalho. Assessment of biochemical methods to detect enzymatic depolymerization of polysaccharides ArchiMer

To find biocatalyst allowing depolymerization of new polysaccharides, one needs to get a sensitive and well adapted method to a screening program. This led us to compare biochemical methods of detection of the depolymerization. Currently used methods such as reducing sugars assays, double bond monitoring or molecular weight determination were tested to follow the kinetic of depolymerization with different enzyme / polysaccharide couples. The range of concentrations of assorted enzymes allowed us to identify the most sensitive and appropriate method to detect polysaccharide degradation. The soluble and insoluble cotyledon (SPF-Co and IPF-Co) and tegument (SPF-Te and IPF-Te) cell wall polymer fractions of common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) were isolated using a chemical-enzymatic method. The sugar composition showed that SPF-Co was constituted of 38.6% arabinose, 23.4% uronic acids, 12.7% galactose, 11.2% xylose, 6.4% mannose and 6.1% glucose, probably derived from slightly branched and weakly bound polymers. The IPF-Co was fractionated with chelating agent (CDTA) and with increasing concentrations of NaOH. Determination of microalgae cellular composition after phycoremediation of swine wastewaters. Repositório Alice

Phycoremediation of swine wastewaters has been widely reported as an attractive tertiary treatment system, that effectively removes the excessive nutrient loadswhilst offering a valuable source of feedstock biomass. Digestate from an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB, 6%v/v) and a nitrification reactor (NR; 50% v/v) were used as culturing media to microalgae. Experiments were carried out in lab scale photobioreactors (PBRs) using a consortia of Chlorella and Scenedesmus. Ammonia (44 to 90%) and phosphorus (77%) were efficiently removed from both effluents tested after 4 days. Effect of carbon source on morphology and histodifferentiation of Araucaria angustifolia embryogenic cultures BABT

The aim of the present work was to establish in vitro conditions for the induction, stabilization and proliferation of embryogenic cultures of A. angustifolia. Pre-cotyledonary staged zygotic embryos inoculated BM medium supplemented with 5 µM 2,4- D, 2 µM BAP and Kin, and 3% maltose or sucrose resulted in 66.7% induction rate. The rate of induction of embryogenic cultures was affected by the carbon source, as well the multiplication and morphology of the embryogenic cultures. One year-old oysters were reared for 5 months (April-August) in plastic bags on metallic frames at 10 and 60 cm off the sediment at the beginning of April. Enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE) for the production of antiviral and antioxidant extracts from the green seaweed Ulva armoricana (Ulvales, Ulvophyceae) ArchiMer

In order to develop innovative methods for the production of bioactive extracts with potential health benefits, enzyme-assisted extraction has been applied for the bioconversion of Ulva armoricana (Ulvales, Ulvophyceae). The extraction yields, chemical composition, the antioxidant and antiviral activities were determined to assess the efficiency of six commercial enzymatic preparations. Endo-protease treatments significantly increased the extraction yields compared to the control. Abstract Hydrocolloids of Pereskia aculeata Miller (OPNH) are potential ingredients in food industry as emulsifiers and stabilizers. The extraction process of OPNH requires the removal of pigments with activated carbon. Because this step is critical to the quality of the ingredient and has an impact on costs, a new activated carbon has been developed with residues from the same process. Residues activated with NaOH and H3PO4 (300 °C, 1 h) were subjected to batch adsorption tests in model solutions of malachite green (MG), carbohydrate and protein. Ferulic acid depletion by cultured soybean seedlings under action of glucose and methionine BABT

Cultured soybean seedlings were used to investigate how glucose or methionine influenced depletion of ferulic acid. Three-day-old seedlings were grown in hydroponic solution containing ferulic acid plus glucose or methionine, and the level of the phenolic acid were monitored in the nutrient culture. The results showed that ferulic acid depletion was more rapid in the presence of those compounds. After 6 h, the increase caused by glucose (0.01 and 0.05 mM) was more pronounced than methionine in the same concentrations. On the other hand, methionine (0.1 and 0.2 mM) increased depletion more significantly than glucose. Results suggested that both compounds might to increase the allelopathic effects of ferulic acid in the seedlings.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of pelletized or extruded diets, with different levels of carbohydrate and lipid, on the gastrointestinal transit time (GITT) and its modulation in pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus). One hundred and eighty pacu juveniles were fed with eight isonitrogenous diets containing two carbohydrate levels (40 and 50%) and two lipid levels (4 and 8%). Four diets were pelletized and four were extruded. Carbohydrate and lipid experimental levels caused no changes to the bolus transit time. The present study investigated the germination and vigor of Caesalpinia echinata (Brazilwood) seeds stored at negative temperatures. Recently harvested seeds were cryopreserved at -18º or -196ºC and periodically evaluated for germination, seed vigor and carbohydrate composition. The temperatures did not influence the germination percentages or vigor. The germination percentage decreased from 88% in recently harvested seeds to 60% after 730 days of storage. The different temperature and storage times tested did not affect the vigor seed germination as indicated by the measures of plant growth and survival. Growth and energy metabolism of Nile tilapia juveniles fed glycerol PAB

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of inclusion of dietary glycerol in replacement to starch on the growth and energy metabolism of Nile tilapia juveniles. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with four treatments (0, 5, 10, and 15% purified glycerol) and six replicates. Pelleted, isonitrogenous, and isocaloric diets were provided for 60 days. Growth performance parameters and muscle glucose and protein concentrations were not affected by dietary glycerol levels. The treatment with 15% glycerol presented higher levels of muscle and liver triglycerides. A quadratic effect of treatments on muscle and liver triglyceride concentrations was observed. In vitro Dendrobium nobile plant growth and rooting in different sucrose concentrations Horticultura Brasileira

Sucrose is a very important component in in vitro culture media, serving as a source of carbon and energy. In this paper, the rooting and in vitro growth of Dendrobium nobile Lindl (Orchidaceae) were studied using different sucrose concentrations (0 g L-1; 5 g L-1; 10 g L-1; 20 g L-1; 30 g L-1 and 60 g L-1), in a modified MS medium containing half the regular concentration of macronutrients at pH 5.8. Greater increases in plant height (4.21±0.6 cm) and high seedling multiplication (1:4) were observed in the 60 g L-1 sucrose treatment, even without the addition of plant hormones. Sucrose concentration in the culture medium did not influence in vitro plant rooting.

This review considers the importance of compartmentation in the regulation of carbohydrate metabolism in leaves. We draw particular attention to the role of the vacuole as a site for storage of soluble sugars based on sucrose, and discuss briefly their characteristic metabolism. We also point out inconsistencies between the observed properties of vacuoles and the behaviour in vitro of the enzymes of fructan biosynthesis that do not support the hypothesis that the vacuole is the site of synthesis as well as of storage.
