A brief review of nutritional studies for Penaeus monodon ArchiMer
Liao, I; Liu, F.
In order to develop effective formulated for Penaeus monodon , sufficient information is needed on its nutritional requirements. Unfortunately, research on this area has been very limited. This paper outlines the results of such research. Since data on the nutritional requirements of P. japonicus are relatively well established, some of these data are also reviewed in this paper and are used as a basis for assessing the nutritional requirements of P. monodon . Protein, lipid, carbohydrate, mineral and vitamin requirements are evaluated from the parameters of growth survival and feed efficiency. Studies on the effects of enzymes and the development of microparticulate diet for larvae are also summarized.

A modified UNIFAC model for the calculation of thermodynamic properties of aqueous and non-aqueous solutions containing sugars IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Peres, António M.; Macedo, Eugénia A..
A UNIFAC based model is proposed to describe experimental thermodynamic properties of aqueous and non-aqueous solutions containing common sugars, e.g., D-glucose, D-fructose and sucrose. A new group 'OHring' is introduced due to proximity effects. New temperature-independent UNIFAC interaction parameters are estimated based on the binary data available for both D-glucose and D-fructose and only on the solubility data for sucrose. The UNIFAC model used in this work is able to accurately predict the water activity, boiling temperature and freezing point of aqueous sucrose solutions. However, the predictions of the osmotic coefficients for the sucrose/water system present relative deviations up to 9%. Satisfactory predictions of vapor-liquid and solid-liquid...

Alterations in the lipid and soluble sugar content of melanoxylon brauna seeds during natural and accelerated ageing Rev. bras. sementes
Corte,Viviana Borges; Borges,Eduardo Euclydes de Lima e; Gonçalves,José Francisco de Carvalho; Silva,Mirian Sousa.
The decay of seeds is irreversible and at best can only be delayed by applying techniques that reduce the velocity of the metabolic reactions involved. There is little information on the biochemistry of tropical forest tree seeds related to their storability. It was investigated the influence of the composition of lipids and soluble sugars of two storage compartments, the cotyledons and the embryonic axis, of Melanoxylon brauna Schot. (Leguminosae- Caesalpinioideae), a hardwood known as black brauna, seeds stored at 20 ºC for 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months (natural ageing) and for 0, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours at 40 ºC (accelerated ageing). The levels of fatty acids and monosaccharides varied differentially in each of the embryo storage compartments. Changes in...

Antinociceptive activity of sulfated carbohydrates from the red algae Bryothamnion seaforthii (Turner) Kütz. and B. triquetrum (S.G. Gmel.) M. Howe BJMBR
Viana,G.S.B.; Freitas,A.L.P.; Lima,M.M.L.; Vieira,L.A.P.; Andrade,M.C.H.; Benevides,N.M.B..
We report the antinociceptive activity, determined by the writhing, formalin and hot-plate tests in mice, of crude (F0/60), lectin and carbohydrate fractions isolated by ammonium sulfate precipitation (0 to 60%) from Bryothamnion seaforthii and B. triquetrum, species of red algae. Not only fraction F0/60 but also lectins from both species significantly inhibited acetic acid-induced abdominal contractions after intraperitoneal or oral administrations. In the formalin test, lectins (1 and 5 mg/kg, ip, and 5 to 20 mg/kg, po) inhibited the 1st and 2nd phases (5 and 20 min, respectively), but the effect occurred predominantly on the 2nd phase. The effects of the lectins were totally or partially reversed by naloxone (2 mg/kg, sc) in the 1st and 2nd phases,...

Brazil is the third largest producer of pineapple (Ananas comosus) and the market for fresh pineapple is sustained by the Hawaii and Perola cultivars. In this work the Perola cultivar was divided into three main parts, shell, core and pulp, for characterization. Moisture in the pulp was higher (between 10 and 15%) than in the shell and core. The amount of protein was higher in the core (35%) than in the pulp and shell. Perola contained relatively low concentrations of total ascorbic acid in the edible parts, although higher levels of ascorbic acid in the shell. Citric acid corresponded to almost 60% of the total organic acids. The total soluble sugars [~7-12% (FW)] were predominantly sucrose, fructose and glucose. The core had almost twice as much total...

Oliveira,Hernete de Jesus Santos; Abreu,Celeste Maria Patto de; Santos,Custódio Donizete dos; Cardoso,Maria das Graças; Teixeira,Juliana Érica Carvalho; Guimarães,Nilson César Castanheira.
Utilization of water from dry coconuts to produce long-life coconut water, using a 20% mixture of green coconut water in order to reach the quality standard demanded by Brazilian customers, has been done since 2000. That is one more alternative for the by products from Cocos nucifera L. processing industries, introducing marketing advantages like: better storage, longer shelf life, transportation, and visual quality to the customer. Packed with ultrasonic Swedish technology, coconut water has been already commercialized in establishments in Southeastern Brazil. In this work, carbohydrate contents of four coconut water brands and the natural coconut water were comparatively analyzed, and the contents of fructose, glucose, sucrose, total sugars, and reducing...

Changes in the amount of soluble carbohydrates and polyphenols contents during decomposition of Montrichardia arborescens (L.) Schott Acta Amazonica
Cunha-Santino,Marcela Bianchessi da; Pacobahyba,Lucilia Dias; Bianchini Jr,Irineu.
This study describes the aerobic and anaerobic decay of soluble carbohydrates (CH) and polyphenols (PH) during decomposition of Montrichardia arborescens. Plant and water samples were collected in the Cantá stream (2º 49' 11" N and 60º 40' 24" W), Roraima, Brazil. Decomposition chambers with plant fragments and stream water were incubated. Particulate organic matter was separated from dissolved organic matter and concentrations of CH and PH were determined. The results were fitted to 1st order kinetics models. CH and PH comprised a labile fraction (LCH and LPH) and a refractory fraction (RCH and RPH). The global coefficient associated with LCH weight loss was 1.4 times higher under aerobic conditions (3.4 day-1) higher than for anaerobic conditions. On the...

Chilling privation during dormancy period and carbohydrate mobilization in Japanese pear trees Scientia Agricola
Marafon,Anderson Carlos; Citadin,Idemir; Amarante,Luciano do; Herter,Flávio Gilberto; Hawerroth,Fernando José.
The flower bud abortion is one of the main problems that limit commercial pear (Pyrus pyrifolia) production in the southern region of Brazil. Insufficient chilling during the dormancy period is known as the main factor of this problem. One of the hypotheses to explain this problem is that the starch mobilization and carbohydrate fluxes to the buds are impeded when mild temperatures occurred during winter. This study compared the total soluble sugars (TSS) and reducing sugars (RS) concentrations, the cell wall acid invertase (CWAI - EC 3.2.1.26) and sucrose-phosphate synthase (SPS - EC 2.4.1.14) activities in wood of branches and floral buds of Japanese pear trees cv. Housui, grafted on Pyrus calleryana and submitted to chilling conditions during the...

CONA and UEA-I Ligands During Tooth Development Reveals Differences between Human and Rodents Models and Shows the Beginning of Mineral Extracelular Matrix Secretion International Journal of Morphology
Iglesias,Déborah Pitta Paraíso; Rego,Moacyr Jesus Barreto de Melo; Beltrão,Eduardo Isidoro Carneiro; Sobral,Ana Paula Veras.
Many of Glycobyological aspects of human development remain still unclear, mainly in oral science, and this could be observed in a lack of literature with few and old papers about this subject. During tooth histo-morphogenesis changes occur in basement membrane composition, expression of signaling molecules and in localization of cell surface components, where glyco components could be involved. In this sense, this work aimed to analyze the ConA ligands commonly founded in glycoproteins cores and UEA-I ligands since fucolization is a Key event in many physiological and pathological processes. Therefore 15 jaws of human fetuses were ethically obtained, histologicaly processed and then submitted to lectin histochemistry with appropriated controls. The...
