Beef cattle production in the southeastern United States differs in size, practice, and production type from other U.S. regions. Smaller, cow-calf type operations dominate in this region because the climate, forage availability, and other land use practices of farmers make this type of cattle operation more ideal for the Southeast. Cow-calf production, particularly small-herd enterprises, does not typically require the level of intense management compared to other beef operations, thus making it more manageable for those with limited time and labor. This research summarizes the current practices and characteristics that define the Southeastern cow-calf operation as it operates under the new challenges of today’s market and operating environment; it also... |

The genetic diversity of a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) at the exon 20 (T945M) of the leptin receptor gene (LEPR) and of three short tandem repeats (STRs BM7225, BMS694, and BMS2145) linked to LEPR was investigated in three beef cattle herds (Brangus Ibagé, Charolais, and Aberdeen Angus). A cheap and effective new method to analyze the T945M polymorphism in cattle populations was developed and the possible role of these polymorphisms in reproduction and weight gain of postpartum cows was evaluated. High levels of genetic diversity were observed with the average heterozygosity of STRs ranging from 0.71 to 0.81. No significant association was detected between LEPR markers and reproductive parameters or daily weight gain. These negative results... |

Brazil is one of largest beef producers in the world. Data from the Brazilian Agricultural Census 2006, carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), has shown that approximately 2.7 million farms had bovine cattle, i.e. more than half of the farms in the country, raising 176.1 million head. In the last three decades, the expansion of beef production has relied strongly on increasing stocking rates and animal productivity rather than expansion of pasture area. Still, there is high variability in productivity levels and technology adoption throughout the territory. Identifying and characterizing such variations is essential to allow improving the estimates of greenhouse gases flows, and to better evaluate mitigation and... |
