A new family of brachyuran (Crustacea: Decapoda: Goneplacoidea) from the Eocene of Java, Indonesia Naturalis

A new family, Martinocarcinidae, must accommodate the monotypic genus Martinocarcinus Böhm, 1922. The genus displays a unique combination of dorsal, sternal and abdominal characters justifying placement in a new family. The Martinocarcinidae joins several other now extinct Eocene families that flourished at that time, supporting the long-held view that the Eocene was a time of radiation within the Brachyura.

Catalogue of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic holotypes in the collection of plant fossils in the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum, Leiden Naturalis

This is an inventory of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic type material in the original palaeobotanical collections of the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum, Leiden, The Netherlands. In total 60 holotypes are documented and one is noted as missing from the collections. One new combination is made (Cinnamomum javanicum (Goeppert) nov. comb.) and several species are considered to be conspecific.

Cenozoic tectonics of the Western Approaches Channel basins and its control of local drainage systems ArchiMer

The geology of the Channel Western Approaches is a key to understand the post-rift evolution of the NW European continental margin in relation with the Europe/Africa collision. Despite considerable evidence of Tertiary tectonic inversion throughout the Channel basin, the structures and amplitudes of the tectonic movements remain poorly documented across the French sector of the Western Approaches. The effect of the tectonic inversion for the evolution of the "Channel River", the major system that flowed into the English Channel during the Plio-Quaternary eustatic lowstands, also needs to be clarified. Cenozoic trace fossils of the Cruziana, Zoophycos and Nereites ichnofacies from the Fuegian Andes, Argentina Ameghiniana

The systematics, paleoenvironmental implications, and diversity of Cenozoic trace fossils from the Fuegian Andes are studied. The relatively complete Paleocene-Miocene stratigraphic column includes ichnoassemblages of the Cruziana (Leticia Formation, late Middle Eocene), Zoophycos and Nereites (Early Eocene-Early Miocene turbidite systems) ichnofacies. The last two ichnoasemblages contain the only known deep marine Cenozoic trace fossils in Argentina. The late Middle Eocene Leticia Formation represents a transgressive-regressive cycle and bears the ichnogenera Curvolithus, Diplocraterion, Gyrochorte, Rosselia, Patagonichnus, Asterosoma, Palaeophycus, Paradictyodora, Planolites, Rhizocorallium, Schaubcylindrichnus, Taenidium, and Teichichnus. Eocene-Pliocene deep sea ostracodes from ODP site 744A, Southern Indian Ocean Anais da ABC (AABC)

The Eocene-Pliocene deep sea ostracodes from the ODP site 744A (Kerguelen Plateau) are herein studied under the taxonomic and paleoecologic aspects. 28 species are identified, being the genera Krithe, Cytherella and Dutoitella the most diversified. A faunal threshold was recorded in the Early Oligocene, which is tentatively explained under the knowledge of the paleoceanographical studies carried out not only in the Kerguelen Plateau but also in adjacent areas. The faunal turnover and variations in both richness and abundance possibly reflect the inception of psychrosphere and the influence of hydrological changes in the preservation of carapaces. Growth and demise of Cenozoic isolated carbonate platforms: New insights from the Mozambique Channel seamounts (SW Indian Ocean) ArchiMer

Although long-term evolutions of isolated shallow-water carbonate platforms and demise episodes leading to guyot formation have been the subject of numerous studies during the last decades, their driving processes are still the subject of active debates. The Mozambique Channel (SW Indian Ocean) is characterized by several flat-topped seamounts ranging from 11°S to 21°S in latitudes. This report describes the initial geological observations made during BGS Cruise 06/02 carried out from the 18th May to the 9th June 2006 as part of the ongoing Marine, Coastal and Hydrocarbons Programme. Survey operations were undertaken in UK and Faroese national waters and were planned to integrate with existing BGS regional data and to fill in knowledge gaps.

Several well-preserved remains of a new munidopsid anomuran, Palmunidopsis muelleri n. gen., n. sp., are described from a Late Miocene (Tortonian-Messinian) reef-associated decapod crustacean faunule of southern Cyprus. This is the first record of a Late Miocene representative of the family. The occurrence in very shallow-water, reefal limestones of the Koronia Member (Pakhna Formation) in southern Cyprus is atypical in comparison to the ecology of extant munidopsids.

Soft-sediment ichnotaxa from the Cenozoic White Limestone Group, Jamaica, West Indies Naturalis

Jamaica, the third largest of the Greater Antillean islands, exposes various lithological units that are dominated by Cenozoic carbonate rocks including those of the mid-Cenozoic White Limestone Group. This Group is comprised of six formations, the Troy, Swanswick, Somerset, Moneague, Montpelier and Pelleu Island formations. An uncommon but moderately diverse, poorly to moderately preserved softsediment ichnofauna is described herein from several of these, namely the Moneague, Montpelier and Pelleu Island formations, which have yielded 15 ichnogenera represented by 27 ichnospecies. The Barreiras Group in the Northeastern coast of the State of Bahia, Brazil: depositional mechanisms and processes Anais da ABC (AABC)

The Barreiras Group is a Miocene to Lower Pleistocene continental terrigenous sedimentary deposit exhibiting a large occurrence along the Brazilian coast. In the Conde region, located in the northeastern part of the State of Bahia, the sedimentological characteristics of these sediments are indicative of a deposition as gravelly and sandy bed load in braided fluvial systems, related to alluvial fans, under an arid to semi-arid climate. The basal portion of the group is dominated by a gravelly-sandy lithofacies deposited by debris flows and pseudoplastic debris flows, with lesser occurrences of subaqueous deposits, characterizing a proximal fluvial system deposition.
