A study of stomach contents of Cory's shearwater, Calonectris diomedea borealis (Cory, 1881) (Aves: Procellariidae), from the Macaronesian Islands Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Clarke, M.R..
Data are presented on the diet of Cory's Shearwater Calonectris diomedea borealis (Cory, 1881) resulting from stomach investigations based on 18 birds from Hierro (Canary Islands), 5 from Selvagem Grande (Selvagens or Salvage Islands), 2 from São Miguel and 1 from São Jorge (Azores), collected between 1977 and 1981. These data confirm the general idea that this shearwater feeds principally on fish and squid. The glandular stomachs of 9 birds from Hierro contained significant quantities of food, varying in wet weight from ca. 4-40 gm; in four cases more or less complete squids were present, all Ommastrephes bartrami (Le Sueur, 1821). In addition, the gizzards of all 26 birds, except one, contained fragments of squid beaks belonging to 12 species. Several of...

Cephalopods from the Netherlands Indian Ocean Programme (NIOP) (Expeditions 1992-1993) Naturalis
Salcedo-Vargas, Mario Alejandro.
Cephalopods of the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and the Western Indian ocean off Somalia are studied. A preliminary annotated list is presented. This study was based on the examination of 381 specimens captured with a Rectangular Midwater Trawl (RMT8) during three cruises of the Netherlands Indian Ocean Programme. The taxa identified represent: 22 families, 35 genera and 56 species. Two species new to science are found. Systematic position and taxonomic re-evaluation in the Chiroteuthidae, Mastigoteuthidae and Octopodidae is briefly discussed. The present collections represent a valuable contribution to the species composition from the Western Indian Ocean and to cephalopod juvenile morphology.

Inventory of mollusks from the estuary of the Paraíba River in northeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Lima,Silvio Felipe Barbosa; Lucena,Rudá Amorim; Santos,Galdênia Menezes; Souza,José Weverton; Christoffersen,Martin Lindsey; Guimarães,Carmen Regina; Oliveira,Geraldo Semer.
Abstract: Coastal ecosystems of northeastern Brazil have important biodiversity with regard to marine mollusks, which are insufficiently studied. Here we provide an inventory of mollusks from two sites in the estuary of the Paraíba River. Mollusks were collected in 2014 and 2016 on the coast and sandbanks located on the properties of Treze de Maio and Costinha de Santo Antônio. The malacofaunal survey identified 12 families, 20 genera and 21 species of bivalves, 17 families, 19 genera and 20 species of gastropods and one species of cephalopod. Bivalves of the family Veneridae Rafinesque, 1815 were the most representative, with a total of five species. Gastropods of the family Littorinidae Children, 1834 had the greatest species richness. The most abundant...

On organic remains in shells of Paleozoic and Mesozoic cephalopods (nautiloids and ammonoids) OMA
Grégoire, Ch..
Remnants of decalcified nacreous layers from Ordovician, Devonian, Carboneferous (including Pennsylvanian), Permian, Jurassic and Cretaceous, nautiloid and ammonoid shells, examined in the electron microscope, consists of various, biuret-positive structures, which reflect degrees in degradation of the original conchiolon sheets. Identification of these structures as altered nacreous concholin and discrimination from contaminating structures of foreign organisms, a frequent finding in fossil shells, were based on detection of similar structural modifications in the Recent Nautilus shell, in well preserved shells of Pennsylvanian and Mesozoic cephalopods and in alterations produced artificially in experimental diagenesis of the Recent...

Systematic value of the ultrastructure of the sucker surface in the squid family Mastigoteuthidae (Mollusca: Cephalopoda) Naturalis
Salcedo-Vargas, Mario Alejandro.
The ultrastructure of the sucker surface is described and its systematic value for mastigoteuthid squids, which bear minute suckers, is considered. An introduction to sucker terms is given and a redefinition of these terms is attempted. Using scanning electron microscopic data, two genera and four subgenera of Mastigoteuthidae from the Northwest Pacific are distinguished. The presence of “cushions” in the sucker is discussed and considered as a character important for understanding adaptations of cephalopods to the deep-sea.

The cycle of activity in the accessory nidamental glands from cephalopods OMA
Richard, A.; Van den Branden, C.; Decleir, W..
The reproductive system of female cephalopods includes a glandular system (oviduct glands and nidamental glands), which develops considerably during sexual maturation and which plays an important part in the formation of the different egg membranes. It is generally uncoloured. An exception are the nidamental glands in Nautilus pompilius which are composed of opaque yellowish or yellowish-green tissue (Ref. 1). Moreover all Sepioidea and Myopsida and Ctenopteryx, a species belonging to the Oegopsida (Ref.2) possess accessory nidamental glands. The most striking property of these glands is their intense coloration varying from yellow to orange and red. This paper is a comparative study of the accessory nidamental glands...
