Agronomic performance of quinoa selected in the Brazilian Savannah PAB
Spehar,Carlos Roberto; Santos,Roberto Lorena de Barros.
Twenty six breeding lines, selected from individual plant progenies of hybrids among varieties Amarilla de Marangani, Blanca de Junín, Chewecca, Faro 4, Improved Baer, Kancolla, Real, and Salares-Roja, had their agronomic characters evaluated, in Planaltina, DF, Brazil (15º36'S and 47º12'W), 1,000 masl, in randomized complete blocks, on a Ferralsol, previously limed and fertilized. Grain yield was positively associated with plant height, inflorescence length and diameter, and plant cycle. Genetic gain can be attained by selection based in these characters for commercial production of quinoa in tropical regions.

Amaranth, quinoa, and millet growth and development under different water regimes in the Brazilian Cerrado PAB
Jayme-Oliveira,Adilson; Ribeiro Júnior,Walter Quadros; Ramos,Maria Lucrécia Gerosa; Ziviani,Adley Camargo; Jakelaitis,Adriano.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the growth dynamics of the cover plants amaranth (Amaranthus cruentus), quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa), and millet (Pennisetum glaucum) in a Typic Acrustox, under different water regimes in the Brazilian Cerrado. The cultivation was carried out in the winter, with reduced rainfall, which facilitated the application of varying irrigation depths to the different crops. Water regimes denominated lower, lower middle, upper middle, and upper - corresponding to 217, 386, 563, and 647 mm water depths, respectively - were tested by means of an irrigation bar composed of sprinklers with different flow rates. Plant growth was quantified by weekly collections. Amaranth was the most responsive plant to water. Quinoa...

Characterization of the acetohydroxyacid synthase multigene family in the tetraploide plant Chenopodium quinoa Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Mestanza,Camilo; Riegel,Ricardo; Silva,Herman; Vásquez,Santiago C.
Background Currently, the technology called Clearfield® is used in the development of crops resistant to herbicides that inhibit the enzyme acetohydroxy acid synthase (AHAS, EC 2.2.1.6). AHAS is the first enzyme of the biosynthetic pathway that produces the branched-chain of the essential amino acids valine, leucine, and isoleucine. Therefore, multiple copies of the AHAS gene might be of interest for breeding programs targeting herbicide resistance. In this work, the characterization of the AHAS gene was accomplished for the Chenopodium quinoa Regalona-Baer cultivar. Cloning, sequencing, and Southern blotting were conducted to determine the number of gene copies. Results The presence of multiple copies of the AHAS gene as has been shown previously in...

Divergência genética entre genótipos de quinoa quanto a crescimento morfológico e caracteres da panícula Sci. Agrar.Paran. / SAP
de Oliveira, Giovani Andreazza; de Vasconcelos, Edmar Soares; Achre, Diandra.
This study aimed to identify and select genotypes of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) with greater genetic distance between them, to compose groups of crossing. For both genotypes were evaluated two distinct populations of Chenopodium quinoa (Cherry Vanilla and Brilliant Rainbow), 15 quantitative characteristics being evaluated to determine the genetic distance and formation of groups with similar plants. The grouping was done by the method of neighbor furthest from the standardized mean euclidean distances, which allowed the division of 44 genotypes into three distinct groups. The crossing were those recommended involving genetic distance greater genotypes, genotype example 22 (group 1, Brilliant population belonging to Rainbow) genotype 34 (third group,...

Pesoti,Aline Regiele; Oliveira,Bruno Menezes de; Oliveira,Augusto Cesar de; Pompeu,Dávia Guimarães; Gonçalves,Daniel Bonoto; Marangoni,Sérgio; Silva,José Antonio da; Granjeiro,Paulo Afonso.
Abstract A novel trypsin inhibitor of protease (CqTI) was purified from Chenopodium quinoa seeds. The optimal extracting solvent was 0.1M NaCl pH 6.8 (p < 0.05). The extraction time of 5h and 90 °C was optimum for the recovery of the trypsin inhibitor from C. quinoa seeds. The purification occurred in gel-filtration and reverse phase chromatography. CqTI presented active against commercial bovine trypsin and chymotrypsin and had a specific activity of 5,033.00 (TIU/mg), which was purified to 333.5-fold. The extent of purification was determined by SDS-PAGE. CqTI had an apparent molecular weight of approximately 12KDa and two bands in reduced conditions as determined by Tricine-SDS-PAGE. MALDI-TOF showed two peaks in 4,246.5 and 7,908.18m/z. CqTI...

Influence of contrasting environments on seed composition of two quinoa genotypes: nutritional and functional properties Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Miranda,Margarita; Vega-Gálvez,Antonio; Martínez,Enrique A; López,Jéssica; Marín,Rosa; Aranda,Mario; Fuentes,Francisco.
Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) in Chile represents a source of germplasm with high nutritional value. However, there is little information available related to quinoa seed quality grown under contrasting environments. In this study we evaluated the changes on seed composition of seeds of two lowland/coastal quinoa genotypes grown under arid (Vicuna) and cold-temperate (Temuco) conditions in Chile. Results showed that in the case of 'Regalona Baer' and 'Villarrica' genotypes the arid location (with irrigation) led to a significant increase (P < 0.05) in grain yield (4.2 and 5.1 t ha-1, respectively), soluble dietary fiber (16.8 ± 0.4 and 28.9 ± 2.1 g kg-1 DM, respectively), vitamin B3 (2.44 ± 0.005 and 2.26 ± 0.04 mg 100 g-1 DM, respectively),...

Purification, partial characterization and antimicrobial activity of Lectin from Chenopodium Quinoa seeds Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
POMPEU,Dávia Guimarães; MATTIOLI,Marcelo Augusto; RIBEIRO,Rosy Iara Maciel de Azambuja; GONÇALVES,Daniel Bonoto; MAGALHÃES,Juliana Teixeira de; MARANGONI,Sérgio; SILVA,José Antônio da; GRANJEIRO,Paulo Afonso.
Abstract A novel lectin was isolated from the seeds of Chenopodium quinoa. To achieve this end, the crude extract from the quinoa was submitted to two purification steps, Sephadex G50 and Mono Q. The hemagglutinating activity showed that this lectin agglutinates human erythrocytes. Its activity is inhibited by glucose and mannose, and remained stable under a wide range of pH levels and temperatures. The quinoa lectin was found to be a heterodimeric lectin of approximately 60 kDa, consisting of two subunits of approximately 25 kDa and 35 kDa. This lectin had its antimicrobial activity tested against several bacteria strains and effectively inhibited three strains. These strains were all Gram-negative, making this lectin a promising antimicrobial tool.

Quinoa and flaxseed: potential ingredients in the production of bread with functional quality BABT
Calderelli,Valéria Alcântara Santos; Benassi,Marta de Toledo; Visentainer,Jesuí Vergílio; Matioli,Graciette.
The objective of this work was to compare the physicochemical characteristics of quinoa and flaxseed bread. Sensory acceptance, color and texture were also appraised. They showed appropriate balances between their content of polyunsaturated and saturated fatty acids and low levels of trans fatty acids. Flaxseed bread had larger amounts of mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids, omega-6 and omega-3, as well as a more balanced omega-6/omega-3 ratio. Quinoa bread, on the other hand, had the advantage of presenting smaller contents of saturated fatty acids. With regard to color and texture, quinoa bread had similar characteristics to the flaxseed bread. The quinoa bread was well accepted by the consumers, who expressed high interest in buying it.

The importance of heat against antinutritional factors from Chenopodium quinoa seeds Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Silva,José Antonio da; Pompeu,Dávia Guimarães; Costa,Olavo Flores da; Gonçalves,Daniel Bonoto; Spehar,Carlos Roberto; Marangoni,Sérgio; Granjeiro,Paulo Afonso.
Chenopodium quinoa seeds have high protein content. The nutritional value of quinoa is superior compared with traditional cereals. Its essential amino acid composition is considered next to the ideal, and its quality matches that of milk proteins. In this study, the seed storage proteins from Chenopodium quinoa were extracted, fractionated, partially purified, and characterized. The structural characterization was performed by Tricine-SDS-PAGE and two-dimensional electrophoresis, and it confirmed the presence of proteins of molecular weight of 30 and 7kDa, probably corresponding to lectins and trypsin inhibitors, respectively. The functional characterization of these proteins evidenced their activity as antinutritional factors due to their in vitro...
