Piñeiro, R.; Areces, J. A.; Salinas, E..

Characterizing and Comparing the Spawning Habitats of Sardine (Sardinops sagax) and Anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the Northern Benguela Region OceanDocs
Tjizoo,Mbeurora Beau.
Spawning habitats of sardine and anchovy in eastern boundary current systems are characterized in an attempt to understand the fluctuations observed in their abundance. The northern Benguela, as an eastern boundary current system, is characterized by turbulent conditions that seem to govern the variability observed in the abundance of these species. Sardine and anchovy have developed mechanisms that enable them to maximize productivity. In the northern Benguela, spawning intensity is historically known to be high in periods and vicinities where turbulence is reduced. However, it is believed that selection of conditions for spawning by these species may change withfluctuations in abundance of fish.

Climatic changes: what if the global increase of CO2 emissions cannot be kept under control? BJMBR
Barreto de Castro,L.A..
Climatic changes threaten the planet. Most articles related to the subject present estimates of the disasters expected to occur, but few have proposed ways to deal with the impending menaces. One such threat is the global warming caused by the continuous increase in CO2 emissions leading to rising ocean levels due to the increasing temperatures of the polar regions. This threat is assumed to eventually cause the death of hundreds of millions of people. We propose to desalinize ocean water as a means to reduce the rise of ocean levels and to use this water for populations that need good quality potable water, precisely in the poorest regions of the planet. Technology is available in many countries to provide desalinated water at a justifiable cost...

Extreme temperature trends in the equatorial region of Brazil: Case study of the state of Ceará Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Andrade,Eunice Maia de; Silva,Bernardo Barbosa da; Rodrigues,Meilla Marielle Araújo; Mendonça,Marcos Amauri Bezerra; Chaves,Luiz Carlos Guerreiro.
Despite uncertainties as to the real causes, there is a large amount of evidence of climatic change on Earth. With the objective of investigating changes in extreme air temperatures, as well as the local effects of these changes, eight data sets, collected throughout the State of Ceará in Brazil, were analyzed. Four series of data were obtained from the semi-arid region, three from the coastal zone, and one from a mountainous region. To quantify the changes that occurred during the study period, variations in maximum and minimum temperatures were calculated in relation to the mean of each data series. The annual rates of temperature increase were estimated from the angular coefficients of the best-fit lines. The results showed that although there are...

Genesis of the sombric horizon in ultisols (red argisols) in southern Santa Catarina, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Almeida,Jaime Antonio de; Cararo,Denis Cesar; Uberti,Antônio Ayrton Auzani.
Dark subsurface horizons, with properties similar to the sombric horizon characterized by the USA Soil Taxonomy, are frequent in Southern Brazil. The genesis of this horizon is controversial and poorly understood. This study aimed to describe the occurrence of sombric-like horizons in Ultisols in the South of Santa Catarina State, at low altitudes, and suggest possible processes of humus transference, accumulation and persistence in these horizons. Physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of four Ultisols were evaluated; three were sampled in a toposequence, and another representative one in an isolated profile (RSP). The dark subsurface horizons coincide with the AB and BA transitional genetic horizons; they are acid, low in base saturation, and...

Global climate change and the vulnerability of the Nigerian coastal zone to accelerated sea level rise: Impacts and responds. OceanDocs
Ibe, A.C..
In the recent past, climatic changes and variations have occurred in Nigeria with resulting adverse socio-economic impact. From these experiences, it is inferred that the expected change in global climate will have far reaching disastrous consequences for Nigeria if appropriate anticipatory technical and policy Measure are not taken. More recent results from various models based on an eventual warming from a doubling of greenhouse gases of between 1.5 and 5oC by the end of the 21st century predict an acceleration of the eustatic rise in sea level from 1.2-1.5mm/yr. over the last hundred year s to 4 – 6mm/yr. although previous estimates were much higher [e.g.56–3.68m by the end of the 21 century] on the low lying Coastal zone of Nigeria, which is rich in...

High temperatures on root growth and lignification of transgenic glyphosate-resistant soybean Agrociencia
Zonetti,P. da Costa; Suzuki,L. Sayuri; Bonini,E. Aparecida; Ferrarese,M. L. Lucio; Ferrarese-Filho,Osvaldo.
Glyphosate resistant transgenic soybean [Glycine max (L.) Mettill] expresses a glyphosate insensitive EPSPS (5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase). This enzyme is involved in important secondary metabolism pathways, including lignin biosynthesis. Thus, differences in lignin content and growth between susceptible (OC14) and glyphosate-resistant soybean may be observed. The objective of this study was to evaluate differences between growth and lignin content of roots in transgenic and OC14 soybean cultivated at high temperatures. Seeds from the OC14 soybean and its transgenic cultivar, CD213RR, were germinated at 25, 27.5, 30 and 32.5 °C. After 3 d, seedlings were cultivated in Hoagland half-strength nutrient solution during 12 h photoperiods and at...

Implications of climate change on the management of Rift Valley lakes in Kenya. The case of lake Baringo OceanDocs
Ngaira, Josephine K..
Climate patterns of the World became very variable during the last half of the twentieth century. Causes of this variability/change have been identified as: Sun Spot activity, ozone depletion, decline in the solar beam, with the more pronounced especially in Africa being Increased atmospheric carbondioxide, and albedo change due to anthropogenic factors. The most affected weather elements by the above mentioned factors particularly in the tropics are Rainfall and Temperature, and the climatic environments most affected by the named weather elements are the arid and semi-arid lands which are already moisture constrained. The rift valley in Kenya, where most of the lakes are located experience Arid and Semi-Arid climate. The lakes located in this region are...

Model of wetland development of the Amapá coast during the late Holocene Anais da ABC (AABC)
Guimarães,José T.F.; Cohen,Marcelo C.L.; França,Marlon C.; Lara,Rúben J.; Behling,Hermann.
The modern vegetation types, sedimentary sequences, pollen records and radiocarbon dating obtained from three sediment cores from Calçoene Coastal Plain were used to provide a palaeoecological history during the late Holocene of Amapá coastal wetland according to flood regime, sea-level and climatic changes. Based on these records, four phases of vegetation development are presented and they probably reflect the interaction between the flow energy to the sediment accumulation and the brackish/freshwater influence in the vegetation. This work suggests interchanges among time periods characterized by marine and fluvial influence. The longitudinal profile did not reveal the occurrence of mangrove in the sediment deposited around 2100 yr B.P. During the second...

Phylogenetic niche conservatism and plant diversification in South American subtropical grasslands along multiple climatic dimensions Genet. Mol. Biol.
Barros,Michel J.F.; Silva-Arias,Gustavo A.; Segatto,Ana Lúcia Anversa; Reck-Kortmann,Maikel; Fregonezi,Jeferson N.; Diniz-Filho,José Alexandre F.; Freitas,Loreta B..
Abstract Phylogenetic niche conservatism can be investigated at multiple scales on an explicit geographical context. Haplotype-based comparative analyses of lineages occupying the same region, and thus subjected to similar environmental factors, allow decoupling shared evolutionary and ecological patterns, as well as multiple dimensions of adaptive diversification. Here we aimed to assess the role of environmental drivers on diversification of subtropical grassland, based on haplotypic diversity of two plant genera. We sampled two closely related and co-distributed grassland plant genera, Petunia and Calibrachoa, across their entire distribution area. Eigenvectors extracted from pairwise distances based on chloroplast DNA haplotypes were used to fit...
