Behavior of Japanese quail in different air velocities and air temperatures PAB
Santos,Tatiany Carvalho dos; Gates,Richard Stephen; Tinôco,Ilda de Fátima Ferreira; Zolnier,Sérgio; Baêta,Fernando da Costa.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the combined effects of air temperature and air velocity on the behavior of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). A total of 216 Japanese quail in their initial laying phase were used. Bird behavior was categorized with an ethogram (eat, drink, stop, open wings/shiver, others). The experimental design was a randomized complete block, in a 4x4 factorial arrangement, with four air velocities (0, 1, 2, and 3 m s-1) and air temperatures (17, 23, 29, and 35°C). The behavior “stop” was greater when the birds were subjected to 17°C. At 35°C, a significant reduction (p<0.05) was observed in the behavior “eat” at 0 m s-1, compared with the other velocities. The behaviors of laying quail are similar in...

Chilling tolerance in Zizania latifólia Horticultura Brasileira
Ye,Zihong; Cui,Haifeng; An,Xinxin; Yu,Xiaoping.
ABSTRACT: The tumescent stems of Zizania latifolia are consumed as vegetable in southern and eastern Asia. This study aimed to compare photosynthesis and chilling tolerance parameters between two well-known Zizania latifolia cultivars: Longjiao 2 and Zhejiao 911, which are chilling tolerant and sensitive, respectively. We found that severe cold stress induced photosynthesis inhibition (5°C) resulted from non-stomatal factors. However, net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs) and transpiration rate (Tr) of the cultivar Longjiao 2 were higher than that of Zhejiao 911 with more gradual variations. Six parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence including latent activity of PSII (Fv/F0), efficiency of primary photochemistry (Fv/Fm), photochemical...

Cold induced changes on sugar contents and respiratory enzyme activities in coffee genotypes Ciência Rural
Partelli,Fábio Luiz; Vieira,Henrique Duarte; Rodrigues,Ana Paula Dias; Pais,Isabel; Campostrini,Eliemar; Chaves,Maria Manuela Coelho Cabral; Ramalho,José Cochicho.
The present research aimed to characterize some biochemical responses of Coffea canephora (clones 02 and 153) and C. arabica (Catucaí IPR 102) genotypes subjected to low positive temperatures, helping to elucidate the mechanisms involved in cold tolerance. For that, one year old plants were subjected successively to 1) a temperature decrease (0.5°C a day) from 25/20°C to 13/8°C (acclimation period), 2) a three day chilling cycle (3x13/4°C) and to 3) a recovery period of 14 days (25/20°C). In Catucaí (less cold sensitive when compared to clone 02) there was an increased activity in the respiratory enzymes malate dehydrogenase and pyruvate kinase. Furthermore, Catucaí showed significant increases along the cold imposition and the higher absolute values after...

Cold-Induced Ascites in Broilers: Effects of Vitamin C and Coenzyme Q10 Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Nemati,MH; Shahir,MH; Harakinezhad,MT; Lotfalhian,H.
ABSTRACT We hypothesized that the supplementation of vitamin C (Vit. C) and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) alone or in combination could reduce the negative effects of cold stress in broilers. Four hundred male chicks were exposed for 24 h to cold stress (15 ºC) starting from 15d of age, while a positive control group (PC, 100 birds) was kept under normal temperature condition. The experimental groups under cold stress (four treatments in 5 replicates of 20 birds) were: negative control (NC, basal diet), Vit. C (basal diet + 300 mg/kg Vit. C), CoQ10 (basal diet + 40 mg/kg CoQ10) and Vit. C plus CoQ10 (basal diet + Vit. C+ CoQ10at above mentioned doses). Vit. C or CoQ10 supplementation were restored (p<0.01) performance and lowered (p<0.01) ascites mortality....

Comparative Analysis of C-repeat Binding Factors (CBFs) in Tomato and Arabidopsis BABT
Heidari,Parviz.
Abstract Cold stress is one of the limiting factors of plant production that plants use different mechanisms for cold tolerance. CBF genes play critical role to regulate the cold responsive genes. To better understand of CBF gene functions, the tomato-CBFs and Arabidopsis-CBFs were evaluated using bioinformatics tools, and finally the expression patterns of SlCBF1 gene were analyzed under 10 and 4˚C in two contrasting tomato species (Solanum lycopersicum and S. habrochaites). The different cis regulatory elements were observed in promoter region of SlCBF1 and AtCBF1 genes, and ICE1, COR and HOS1 proteins exhibited high interaction with CBFs. The results of Real time PCR of SlCBF1 exhibited that under 10 and 4 ˚C, SlCBF1 was down regulated in cold sensitive...

Determination of thermal comfort zone for early-stage broilers REA
Cândido,Márcia G. L.; Tinôco,Ilda De F. F.; Pinto,Francisco de A. de C.; Santos,Nerilson T.; Roberti,Ricardo P..
ABSTRACT Environmental temperatures currently considered within comfort zone for broiler rearing may be misleading or even obsolete from actual values. Some factors such as animal genetics, nutrition and poultry management, mainly acclimatization to tropical and subtropical conditions, influence in determining the comfort zone for birds. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of five different thermal environments on animal welfare and rearing performance of broiler chickens, setting an ideal temperature range (comfort zone) for each of the first three weeks of poultry breeding. The chicks (375) were randomly placed into five climatic chambers set to distinct thermal conditions, being: one as recommended by the literature, another as stated by Cassuce...

Effects of stress on catecholamine stores in central and peripheral tissues of long-term socially isolated rats BJMBR
Dronjak,S.; Gavrilovic,L..
Both the peripheral sympatho-adrenomedullary and central catecholaminergic systems are activated by various psycho-social and physical stressors. Catecholamine stores in the hypothalamus, hippocampus, adrenal glands, and heart auricles of long-term socially isolated (21 days) and control 3-month-old male Wistar rats, as well as their response to immobilization of all 4 limbs and head fixed for 2 h and cold stress (4ºC, 2 h), were studied. A simultaneous single isotope radioenzymatic assay based on the conversion of catecholamines to the corresponding O-methylated derivatives by catechol-O-methyl-transferase in the presence of S-adenosyl-l-(³H-methyl)-methionine was used. The O-methylated derivatives were oxidized to ³H-vanilline and the radioactivity...

INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT THERMAL ENVIRONMENTS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF LAYING HENS DURING THE INITIAL STAGE OF REARING REA
Andrade,Rafaella R.; Tinôco,Ilda de F. F.; Baêta,Fernando da C.; Albino,Luiz F. T.; Cecon,Paulo R..
ABSTRACT This study was conducted with the aim of assessing the effects of different ambient temperature values on the performance of laying birds from one to 42 days of age in order to obtain optimal comfort temperatures. A total of 864 laying hens were distributed in four climatic chambers with different temperature ranges. One of the chambers was maintained within the thermal range recommended by the literature and the others were maintained under temperatures that consisted of mild and moderate cold stress and moderate heat stress. The experiment was conducted according to a completely randomized design in a split-plot arrangement and six replications. The data were analyzed by means of the analysis of variance and regression. The final performance of...
