The fluctuations in the plasma levels of several bone markers were investigated in newborn calves. Experiment 1 monitored the postnatal changes in the plasma levels of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase isoform 5b (TRAP5b), total alkaline phosphatase (t-ALP) and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BAP) in four calves. These markers increased significantly from 9−20 hr after the first colostrum-suckling compared with the values immediately after birth. Experiment 2 evaluated changes in the plasma TRAP5b, t-ALP, BAP and type I collagen cross-linked N-telopeptide (NTx) levels within 2 days post-birth in five calves with successful passive immunization via colostrum (non-deficient group) and five others with poor colostrum intake (deficient group). The... |

Bactrian camel milk and colostrum are commonly used as foods in Mongolia, whose people believe that these products promote human health. It has been hypothesized that milk oligosaccharides are biologically significant components of human milk, acting as receptor analogs that inhibit the attachment of pathogenic microorganisms to the colonic mucosa, and as prebiotics, which stimulate the growth of bifidobacteria within the infant colon. To evaluate their biological significance, we studied the oligosaccharides present in samples of Bactrian camel milk and colostrum. Using 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, we identified and characterized the following oligosaccharides of camel colostrum: Gal(β1–4)[Fuc(α1–3)]Glc (3-fucosyllactose),... |

First colostrum is an important source of nutrients and immune factors which are necessary for calves in the first weeks of life. Despite these benefits, colostrum can also represent one of the earliest potential exposures of dairy calves to infectious agents which these patogens can act directly on growth and cause diseases such as scours or septicemia. With recent increased interest in pasteurized milk feeding systems, producers have been curious to learn if there may also be benefits from feeding pasteurized colostrum. This study was realized to determine the effects of feeding heat-treated colostrum or unheated colostrum on passive transfer of immunity, immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration, total plate count, health and performance of neonatal dairy... |

The influence of gestational diabetes on vitamin A deficiency in lactating women and, consequently, in their newborn has been verified through a cross-sectional case-control study conducted with volunteer puerperal women. The control group consisted of healthy women and the test group was composed of women with gestational diabetes. One hundred and seven women were recruited, corresponding to 71 controls and 36 cases. Personal, gestational and newborn data were collected directly from medical records during hospitalization. The retinol was determined in maternal colostrum and serum by High Performance Liquid Chromatography. Postpartum women with gestational diabetes were older, had more children and a higher prevalence of cesarean delivery. No difference... |

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro and in vivo the effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on the caprine lentivirus (CLV) in colostrum and milk. This was performed to develop a practical and efficient method of blocking the lactogenic transmission of the virus. In the in vitro experiment, colostrum and milk were treated with 0.25%; 0.50% and 1% SDS. Then, somatic cells of colostrum and milk were submitted to co-culture with caprine synovial membrane cells (CSM). In the in vivo test, goats were fed with colostrum and milk provided from CLV-positive goats treated with SDS in the same concentrations used in the in vitro experiment. Animals were tested by nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) and Western blot (WB) assays. In the in... |

[Infection of lambs by caprine lentivirus]. Abstract: In order to evaluate the transmission of lentivirus of goats to sheep, this study was conducted using three experimental groups. The first (G1) was formed by lambs that received colostrum from goats positive for small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLV) in the first 24 hours of life. The second (G2) was the control group, consisting of lambs that suckled colostrum and milk from negative mothers. Third group (G3) was established from lambs receiving milk from positive goats for SRLV. The animals were monitored by nested PCR, using leukocytes extracted from peripheral blood. Positive results were observed in lambs of G1 and G3. Therefore, considering the detection of proviral DNA in lambs, the potential of... |

Neonates are able to respond to infectious agents by their innate and acquired immune responses, however, they are slow, produced in small-scale and have low antibody concentrations. Thus, maternal immunity transference is critical to calf initial survival, since it provides antibodies to the neonate bovine, cells of the immune system, as well as other essential elements to its survival, as nutrients, components of the complement system, growth factors, hormones, cytokines, oligosaccharides, gangliosides, reactive oxygen molecules, acute phase proteins, immunomodulatory factors, enzymes, ribonucleases, nucleotides, polyamines, peptides and proteins with antimicrobial activity, antioxidants and trypsin inhibitors. This review presents a discussion of... |
