An Approach to Assess Relative Degradation in Dissimilar Forests: Toward a Comparative Assessment of Institutional Outcomes Ecology and Society
Tucker, Catherine M.; Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana; tuckerc@indiana.edu; Randolph, J. C.; Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana; randolph@indiana.edu; Evans, Tom; Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana; evans@indiana.edu; Andersson, Krister P.; University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado;; Persha, Lauren; Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana;; Green, Glen M.; Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana;.
A significant challenge in the assessment of forest management outcomes is the limited ability to compare forest conditions quantitatively across ecological zones. We propose an approach for comparing different forest types through the use of reference forests. We tested our idea by drawing a sample of 42 forests from the Midwest USA, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Brazil, Bolivia, Uganda, and Nepal. We grouped these forests by shared characteristics and selected a reference forest to serve as a baseline for each forest type. We developed an index of disturbances using ratios of several forest measurements to assess differences between each study forest and its reference forest. None of the study forests was known to have been impacted by major natural...

Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) is primarily a market-based mechanism for achieving the effective reduction of carbon emissions from forests. Increasingly, however, concerns are being raised about the implications of REDD+ for equity, including the importance of equity for achieving effective carbon emission reductions from forests. Equity is a multifaceted concept that is understood differently by different actors and at different scales, and public discourse helps determine which equity concerns reach the national policy agenda. Results from a comparative media analysis of REDD+ public discourse in four countries show that policy makers focus more on international than national equity concerns, and that they neglect...

Evaluation of the Efficiency of Agricultural Holdings in View of Structural Changes in Estonia AgEcon
Matveev, Eduard.
This presentation provides comparative analysis of agricultural holdings in Estonia based on the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) data. The FADN data for reference years 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 have been analysed. The FADN data analyses showed, that there are very big differences in the structure of the agricultural holdings. Individual farms represent ca 92% of the total population of agricultural producers but at the same time their part in total production attains less than 50% according to the FADN data for year 2003.

FÖRDERUNG DER ENTWICKLUNG DES LÄNDLICHEN RAUMES IN POLEN UND BAYERN AgEcon
Sroka, Wojciech; Happe, Kathrin.
This paper compares the polish Programme for Rural Development (PROW) and the Bavarian counterpart (BayZAL). The focus is on comparing objectives and Instruments. The different development axes are at the centre of the analysis. The two programmes differ with regard to funding. The programmes are based on differing philosophies concerning the funding of different measures. These are due to differences in economic development and the quality of the human capital in rural areas. Both programmes emphasise measures related to agriculture despite of the claim to target at the whole rural area.

How Multilevel Societal Learning Processes Facilitate Transformative Change: A Comparative Case Study Analysis on Flood Management Ecology and Society
Becker, Gert; Institute for Environmental Studies, VU University Amsterdam; gert.becker@ivm.vu.nl; Sendzimir, Jan; International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis; sendzim@iiasa.ac.at.
Sustainable resources management requires a major transformation of existing resource governance and management systems. These have evolved over a long time under an unsustainable management paradigm, e.g., the transformation from the traditionally prevailing technocratic flood protection toward the holistic integrated flood management approach. We analyzed such transformative changes using three case studies in Europe with a long history of severe flooding: the Hungarian Tisza and the German and Dutch Rhine. A framework based on societal learning and on an evolutionary understanding of societal change was applied to identify drivers and barriers for change. Results confirmed the importance of informal learning and actor networks and their connection to...

Institutional Fit and River Basin Governance: a New Approach Using Multiple Composite Measures Ecology and Society
Lebel, Louis; Chiang Mai University, Thailand; llebel@loxinfo.co.th; Nikitina, Elena; Ecopolicy, Moscow, Russian Federation; elenanikitina@bk.ru; Pahl-Wostl, Claudia; Institute of Environmental Systems Research, University of Osnabrueck, Germany; pahl@usf.uni-osnabrueck.de; Knieper, Christian; Institute of Environmental Systems Research, University of Osnabrueck, Germany; cknieper@uni-osnabrueck.de.
The notion that effective environmental governance depends in part on achieving a reasonable fit between institutional arrangements and the features of ecosystems and their interconnections with users has been central to much thinking about social-ecological systems for more than a decade. Based on expert consultations this study proposes a set of six dimensions of fit for water governance regimes and then empirically explores variation in measures of these in 28 case studies of national parts of river basins in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa drawing on a database compiled by the Twin2Go project. The six measures capture different but potentially important dimensions of fit: allocation, integration, conservation, basinization, participation, and...

Large-scale evolutionary patterns of host plant associations in the Lepidoptera Naturalis
Menken, S.B.J.; Boomsma, J.J.; Nieukerken, E.J. van.
We characterized evolutionary patterns of host plant use across about 2500 species of British Lepidoptera, using character optimization and independent phylogenetic contrasts among 95 operational taxa, and evaluated the extent to which caterpillars are monophagous, use woody host plants, and feed concealed. We also analyzed the use of different Angiosperm superorders and related these associations to other key variables. The Nepticulidae, Pterophoridae, and Gracillariidae allowed explicit comparisons between the British fauna and the Lepidoptera worldwide, which indicated that our broad categorizations for Britain are accurate predictors for the global fauna. The first (lower glossatan) radiation of the Lepidoptera started with monophagous, internal...

National REDD+ policy networks: from cooperation to conflict Ecology and Society
Brockhaus, Maria; Center for International Forestry Research; m.brockhaus@cgiar.org; Di Gregorio, Monica; University of Leeds, Sustainability Research Institute; m.digregorio@leeds.ac.uk.
Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) is a financial mechanism aimed at providing incentives to reduce carbon emissions from forests and enhance carbon stocks. In most forest-rich developing countries, policy actors, i.e., state and nonstate as well as international and national, are designing national REDD+ policies. Actors’ interests and beliefs shape patterns of interactions, ranging from cooperation to conflict, and these interactions influence a country’s direction and progress in REDD+ policy formulation and implementation. We used a comparative policy network approach to analyze the power structures in national REDD+ policy domains in seven countries. We drew on the typology of power structures...

On-Farm Benchmarking: How to Do It and How to Do It Better AgEcon
Franks, J.R.; Collis, Jimi.
Benchmarking is the practice of establishing the relative performance of a business or enterprise against an appropriate standard, generally industry standards derived from a survey of farms. The Policy Commission into the Future of Farming and Food (2002) highlighted a need to spread and improve benchmarking on farms. The requirements of effective benchmarking are illustrated in a ten step framework. The ten steps illustrate the range of expertise and resources a manager requires before being able to justify allocating resources to benchmarking. A comparison of alternative farm surveys and methodologies used to collect, analyse and report industry standards illustrates the difficulties farmers can have in identifying appropriate, robust and accurate...

Queensland Dairy Accounting Scheme 2004 Results and Analysis AgEcon
Murphy, Ray; Busby, Graeme.
This paper provides an overview of the operation of the Queensland Dairy Accounting Scheme (QDAS) and the results and analysis of the 2003-04 data. QDAS is a voluntary scheme providing dairy farmers with an analysis of their dairy business. Key indictors measure performance and the results are then compared against benchmarks and personal targets. Analysis of data has shown that the profit drivers on the most profitable farms in QDAS, are production per cow, herd size, use of homegrown feeds and use of nitrogen fertiliser.

REDD+ policy networks: exploring actors and power structures in an emerging policy domain Ecology and Society
Brockhaus, Maria; Center for International Forestry Research; m.brockhaus@cgiar.org; Di Gregorio, Monica; University of Leeds, Sustainability Research Institute; m.digregorio@leeds.ac.uk; Carmenta, Rachel; Center for International Forestry Research; R.Carmenta@cgiar.org.
Policy making is often neither rational nor solution-oriented, but driven by negotiations of interests of multiple actors that increasingly tend to take place in policy networks. Such policy networks integrate societal actors beyond the state, which all aim, to different degrees, at influencing ongoing policy processes and outcomes. Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) can be considered as such an emerging policy domain, in which actors cooperate and conflict in network structures, build coalitions and try to control information and finance flows relevant for REDD+ decision making. This special feature is the result of an extensive comparative research effort to investigate national level REDD+ policy processes and emerging...

Scaling of Natal Dispersal Distances in Terrestrial Birds and Mammals Ecology and Society
Sutherland, Glenn D; University of British Columbia; gsland@interchg.ubc.ca; Harestad, Alton S; Simon Fraser University; harestad@sfu.ca; Price, Karen; Simon Fraser University; kprice@futurenet.ca; Lertzman, Ken; Simon Fraser University; lertzman@sfu.ca.
Natal dispersal is a process that is critical in the spatial dynamics of populations, including population spread, recolonization, and gene flow. It is a central focus of conservation issues for many vertebrate species. Using data for 77 bird and 68 mammal species, we tested whether median and maximum natal dispersal distances were correlated with body mass, diet type, social system, taxonomic family, and migratory status. Body mass and diet type were found to predict both median and maximum natal dispersal distances in mammals: large species dispersed farther than small ones, and carnivorous species dispersed farther than herbivores and omnivores. Similar relationships occurred for carnivorous bird species, but not for herbivorous or omnivorous ones....

SOME ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF THE HUNGARIAN BIOFUEL PROGRAMS AgEcon
Lakner, Zoltan; Szabo-Burcsi, Dora; Mago, Laszlo.
The use of renewable materials in energy production is gaining in importance all over the world. The production of bioethanol and biodiesel is an important element of the agricultural strategy of numerous countries, even though the economic and environmental impact of these projects is subject to significant debates. Our paper analyses the welfare effects of the Hungarian bioethanol programme, as well as the economic feasibility of the projects. It can be demonstrated that the Hungarian bioethanol programme will cause a rather marginal increase in agricultural prices. The cost of bioethanol production is estimated between 470 and 630 €/m3, influenced by numerous factors. This estimate is in line with the average European values. The possibilities for...

The Characteristics and Historical Development of the Milk Processing System in Kyrgyz Republic OAK
平田, 昌弘; 山田, 勇; 内田, 健治; 元島, 英雅; HIRATA, Masahiro.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Engyodontium album and comparative analyses with Ascomycota mitogenomes Genet. Mol. Biol.
Yuan,Xiao-Long; Mao,Xin-Xin; Liu,Xin-Min; Cheng,Sen; Zhang,Peng; Zhang,Zhong-Feng.
Abstract Engyodontium album is a widespread pathogen that causes different kinds of dermatoses and respiratory tract diseases in humans and animals. In spite of its perniciousness, the basic genetic and molecular background of this species remains poorly understood. In this study, the mitochondrial genome sequence of E. album was determined using a high-throughput sequencing platform. The circular mitogenome was found to be 28,081 nucleotides in length and comprised of 17 protein-coding genes, 24 tRNA genes, and 2 rRNA genes. The nucleotide composition of the genome was A+T-biased (74.13%). Group-II introns were found in the nad1, nad5, and cob genes. The most frequently used codon of protein-coding genes was UAU. Isoleucine was identified as the most...

What Can the United States Learn from Spain's Pork Sector? Implications from a Comparative Economic Analysis AgEcon
Lence, Sergio H..
This study provides a comparative economic analysis of the primary production of pork and its marketing channel in Spain and the United States. The focus on Spain is due to the profound growth and transformation of its pork sector over the last 20 years, compared with other major players in the world market for pig meat. The analysis reveals a number of similar characteristics but also important differences between the two countries. The significant expansion of Spain’'s pork production sector stemmed from a number of factors that apply, to a relatively large extent, to some U.S. states (in particular, North Carolina) but do not apply to the U.S. pork production sector as a whole. This implies that it is unlikely that the U.S. pork production sector as a...
