Clearing and dissecting insects for internal skeletal morphological research with particular reference to bees Rev. Bras. entomol.
Porto,Diego Sasso; Melo,Gabriel A.R.; Almeida,Eduardo A.B..
ABSTRACT A detailed protocol for chemical clearing of bee specimens is presented. Dry specimens as well as those preserved in liquid media can be cleared using this protocol. The procedure consists of a combined use of alkaline solution (KOH or NaOH) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), followed by the boiling of the cleared specimens in 60–70% EtOH. Clearing is particularly useful for internal skeletal morphological research. This procedure allows for efficient study of internal projections of the exoskeleton (e.g., apodemes, furcae, phragmata, tentoria, internal ridges and sulci), but this process makes external features of the integument, as some sutures and sulci, readily available for observation as well. Upon completion of the chemical clearing process the...

Comparative studies in Chelicerata III. Opilionida Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A comparative study is made of the three groups (Cyphophthalmi, Laniatores and Palpatores) into which Opilionida are currently subdivided. Methods, principles and terminology, adopted in this paper, correspond with those of parts I and II of the present series of studies in Chelicerata. Special attention is paid to mouthparts and appendages, to opilionid relationships, and to the evolution of chelicerate characters. It is demonstrated that Cyphophthalmi present all the essential opilionid characters, and evidently do not constitute a separate group. It is also demonstrated that Opilionida are not closely related to Actinotrichid or Anactinotrichid mites, but to other groups with a so-called myliosoma (mouthparts associated with coxisternal feeding); these...

Morfologia externa de Thyridia psidii cetoides (Rosenberg & Talbot) (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae, Ithomiinae): II. Tórax e apêndices Zoologia
Bizarro,Jorge Manuel Saraiva; Casagrande,Mirna Martins; Mielke,Olaf Hermann Hendrik.
A detailed study of the thoracic external morphology of both sexes of Thyridia psidii cetoides (Rosenberg & Talbot, 1914) is presented. The studied material was obtained at the city's plant nursery "Horto Florestal de Curitiba", Paraná, Brazil; mainly by rearing eggs and larvae collected on Cyphomandra betacea (Canavilles) Sendtner, 1845 (Solanaceae). When possible, all the results obtained were compared with those already available in the literature concerning other Nymphalidae subfamilies morphology (Brassolinae, Morphinae, and Danainae); the most striking feature being the almost totally transparent lateral faces of the thoracic mesoscutum in both sexes.

Morfologia externa de Thyridia psidii cetoides (Rosenberg & Talbot) (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae, Ithomiinae). III. Abdome e apêndices Zoologia
Bizarro,Jorge Manuel Saraiva; Casagrande,Mirna Martins; Mielke,Olaf Hermann Hendrik.
A detailed study of the abdominal external morphology of both sexes of Thyridia psidii cetoides (Rosenberg & Talbot, 1914) is presented. The material for this research was obtained at the city's plant nursery "Horto Florestal de Curitiba", Paraná, Brazil; mainly by rearing eggs and larvae collected on Cyphomandra betacea (Canavilles) Sendtner, 1845 (Solanaceae). When possible, the results obtained were compared with those already available in the literature concerning other Nymphalidae subfamilies morphology (Brassolinae, Morphinae and Danainae); the most striking feature being the asymmetrical valvae of the male and the length and faint sclerotinization of the third abdominal sternite in both sexes. A resume containing the main morphological...

The brain of Brycon orbignyanus (Valenciennes, 1850) (Teleostei: Characiformes: Bryconidae): gross morphology and phylogenetic considerations Neotropical Ichthyology
Pereira,Thiago N. A.; Castro,Ricardo M. C..
ABSTRACT The brain of Brycon orbignyanus is described as a model for future studies of the gross morphology of the central nervous system in Characiformes. The study of brain gross morphology of 48 distinct taxa of Characiformes, one of Cypriniformes, two of Siluriformes and two of Gymnotiformes, allowed us to propose, for the first time, six putative brain synapomorphies for the Characiformes and also two possibly unique gross brain morphology characters for the Siluriformes. A detailed protocol for the extraction of the brain in Characiformes is also provided.
