MEDIA COVERAGE OF AGROBIOTECHNOLOGY: DID THE BUTTERFLY HAVE AN EFFECT? AgEcon
Marks, Leonie A.; Kalaitzandonakes, Nicholas G.; Allison, Kevin; Zakharova, Ludmila.
This study examines media coverage of genetically modified (GM) crops in a risk communication framework. Content analysis is employed to investigate how specific environmental, food safety, and landmark events, such as the monarch butterfly and Pusztai controversies, and the cloning of Dolly-the-sheep, were reported by the media. Media coverage is from United Kingdom and United States newspapers over the period 1990 through 2001. On balance, findings show that the UK press has been more negative than the U.S. press in its coverage of GM crops. In addition, environmental and food safety events had a significant impact on the level and cycle of GM crop coverage.

O USO DA ANÁLISE DE CONTEÚDO COMO UMA FERRAMENTA PARA A PESQUISA QUALITATIVA: DESCRIÇÃO E APLICAÇÃO DO MÉTODO AgEcon
Silva, Cristiane Rocha; Gobbi, Beatriz Christo; Simao, Ana Adalgisa.
The purpose of this present rehearsal is the conceptual explanation of the method of content analysis used in the qualitative research and its application in the social sciences. Two theoretical roads are traveled for the construction of that purpose. The first is based on the reference to the Theory of the Social Representations and the second to the Theory of the Action. The argument that sustains the purpose is that both theories base the content analysis as method of analysis for the social actors declared speech. Initially it is accomplished a theoretical rising of authors who described the content analysis and theories and later is developed an analysis of some dissertations that made of the method in the research process in Post Graduation s Program...

Portuguese Retailers’ Motivations to Adopt Front of Pack Nutrition Labels: A Qualitative Analysis AgEcon
Caldeira, Monica; Sottomayor, Miguel; Souza Monteiro, Diogo M..
Nutrition is an important food marketing differentiation criterion. There is growing evidence of the relation between diets and health conditions. Thus there is a potential conflict between industry and public health authorities over the use of nutrition labels. Understanding industry motivations for simplified nutrition labels use is paramount to scrutinize market dynamics, improve label policy design and its evaluation. The aim of this research is to ascertain how retailers perceive consumer’s attitudes to nutrition labels and what motivates their use. We conducted in-depth semi-structure interviews with senior managers in leading Portuguese retail chains. Our results suggest that retailers’ adopt FOP to aid their customers’ food choices, as a response...

PUBLIC OPINION OF AGBIOTECH IN THE US AND UK: A CONTENT ANALYSIS APPROACH AgEcon
Kalaitzandonakes, Nicholas G.; Marks, Leonie A..
In this paper we use content analysis to show trend in public opinion of agrobiotechnology in the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US). We test for the degree of positive and negative content in mass media reporting over the period 1995-1998. Specifically, we test whether there are qualitative and quantitative differences between three national daily newspapers - the Daily Telegraph (UK), USA Today (US), and the Washington Post (US) - based on reporting of agrobiotechnology. Results indicate that content has become more negative in the UK over the time period while reporting the US has not significantly changed. Results indicate that both the BSE and Pusztai crises had an impact on the proportion of negative reporting in the Daily Telegraph.

Scenarios and causes of rollover incidents with self-propelled agricultural machinery in Austria CIGR Journal
Mayrhofer, Hannes; Quendler, Elisabeth; Boxberger, Josef.
Rollovers are the most common incidents with tractors, self-propelled harvesting and agricultural materials handling machinery in Austrian agriculture.  The precise identification of rollover incident scenarios and causes with these vehicles is the aim of the study. In order to achieve this, incident victims were interviewed and incident reports were analysed.  To derive information from report and interview material the qualitative content analysis was used.  The analysis showed that rollovers with tractors, self-propelled harvesting machinery and materials handling machinery showed similarities in terms of causes, circumstances and consequences although they are quite different in vehicle concept, operation and use.  The rollovers were mostly influenced...
