Small holders' agriculture is currently facing new stakes due to State's withdrawal from agricultural support and to higher market requests for producing agricultural products. Different coordination mechanisms can be observed inside the supply chains involving farmers, farmers' organizations, and others stakeholders. They depend on the nature of the product, the characteristics of the stakeholders involved, the technical specifications related to the transactions, and the institutional environment. Relying on a comparative case study methodology, the paper analyzes the consequences of different coordination mechanisms on inclusion or exclusion of small farmers in the northern region of Costa Rica. Market coordination could be an efficient way to integrate... |

Developmental response of the mahogany shootborer, Hypsipyla grandella (Zeller), to temperature was determined in laboratory trials in Turrialba, Costa Rica. Two hundred fresh eggs (less than 24h old) were placed individually inside glass flasks, and exposed to seven constant temperatures (10, 12.5, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35°C), in separate experiments. These were carried out in environmental chambers, at 80-90% relative humidity and 8L:16D photoperiod. After hatch, larvae were fed tender foliage of Spanish cedar (Cedrela odorata) and were inspected every 24h to determine larval and pupal duration, and adult emergence, at each temperature. Relationships between these variables and temperature were analyzed by means of ANOVA, regression and correlation... |

Historically low prices in the conventional coffee market have caused financial and social hardship among coffee farmers. In the face of this crisis, specialty markets have attracted the attention of the international donor community. These market segments have shown consistent growth over the last decade and exhibit price premiums in international markets. Therefore, if higher prices are passed on to farmers, access to specialty markets could help to alleviate the crisis brought on by low prices in the conventional sector. The present study attempts to identify the factors that determine farmers' participation in specialized markets and whether participation in these markets leads to higher prices for farmers. A two-stage model is used to analyze farmers'... |

Friese (1916) described Parapsaenythia flavescens, changing the name to P. argentina. This species is a Colletidae, Paracolletini and belongs in Eulonchopria Brèthes, 1909, and a new combination Eulonchopria flavescens (Friese, 1916) is proposed. The second species apparently was not described: it is a Panurgini and here described as Friesina carinulata gen.n. and sp.n.. At Berlin Museum Psaenythia bernardinensis syn.n., decribed by Strand (1910), from Paraguay, is the male of' Eulonchropiaparaguayen-sis Brèthes, 1909, syn.n. |
