A History of the Organic Agriculture Movement in Australia Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Australia’s involvement in the organic movement is dated from 1928 in this account. There have been four ‘waves’ of organic advocacy in Australia. The First Wave (1920s & 1930s) follows Rudolf Steiner’s 1924 call at Koberwitz (now Kobierzyce, Poland) for a differentiated agriculture. Australian anthroposophists, beginning with Ernesto Genoni, responded to this call by joining Steiner’s Agricultural Experimental Circle (AEC) of Anthroposophical Farmers and Gardeners which was coordinated from Dornach, Switzerland by Dr Ehrenfried Pfeiffer. Bob Williams presented the first public lecture on biodynamics at the home of Walter Burley and Marion Mahoney Griffin at Castlecrag (Sydney) in 1938. The Second Wave of organic agriculture in Australia (1940s &...

An Analysis of Organic Agriculture in Turkey: The Current Situation and Basic Constraints Organic Eprints
Özbilge, Zeynep.
This article gives information about the current situation of Turkish organic agriculture, especially by comparing the official recognition for organic farming in the European Union with that of Turkey and summarizes the existing constraints. The analysis indicates that the further development of Turkish organic agriculture depends upon the development of the domestic organic market and Turkey has to fulfil a number of conditions to provide it. It is needed that the Turkish state both encourages organic production for the domestic market and supports organic agriculture by all means.

Analysis of the Domestic Organic Product Market in Turkey in Comparison with the European Union Experience Organic Eprints
Özbilge, Zeynep.
It is a fact that conventional agriculture whose distinctive property is the implementation of agricultural chemicals aims to increase economic productivity at the expense of creating serious side effects on health and environment. Therefore, the spread of this system in time, has led not only to the probing of its sustainability by making the side effects visible, but also to the ascent of organic agriculture which shows a faster worlwide development since the 1990s. The development of organic agriculture in the EU has also been similar. While the public recognition was realised in the 1990s, the official recognition could not come true before the 2000s. Especially the announcement of the EU in 2001 which put the main emphasis of the CAP on quality,...

Aufbau eines europäischen Informationssystems für den Öko-Markt Organic Eprints
Hamm, Prof. Dr. Ulrich; Recke, Dr. Guido.
While sufficient statistical data in the conventional food market enables decision-makers to opt for investments or policies on a well-founded basis, this data is lacking in the organic food market. A European Concerted Action project in co-operation with the EU statistical office, EUROSTAT, and funded by the European Union aims there-fore at developing a framework for collection and processing reliable and comprehen-sive data on organic markets. The first phase of the project with the aim of analysing the current situation and developing proposals is accomplished. The results are a number of detailed and specific suggestions to improve the data situation on the national and international level.

Ausstieg aus der ÖPUL-Maßnahme biologische Wirtschaftsweise Organic Eprints
Darnhofer, Ika; Eder, Michael; Schmid, Johann; Schneeberger, Walter.
The end of the first five-year contract period of the Austrian Agri-environmental Program (ÖPUL) caused a number of farmers to opt out of the measure organic farming at the end of 1999 and in the following years. A survey was made in 2003 to explore the reasons for reverting to conventional farming. The three most important reasons were the high cost of organic grain for feed, the lack of price premia for organic products (mostly beef and milk) and the frequency of changes in organic standards. Most respondents operate grassland-based dairy farms in Alpine regions. The average size of the farms opting out was 12,0 ha.

Bhutan's plans to go 100% organic make progress Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Bhutan's Minister for Agriculture and Forestry, Dr Pema Gyamtsho, confirmed aspirations for his country to be the world's first country to go 100% organic. Certifying a whole country as organic would set a new challenge for certifiers. At the 2013 Delhi Sustainable Development Summit held this month in India, Gyamtsho stated: "Ours is a mountainous terrain. When we use chemicals they don't stay where we use them, they impact the water and plants. We say that we need to consider all the environment. Most of our farm practices are traditional farming, so we are largely organic anyway". The Bhutan Minister added that "we are Buddhists, too, and we believe in living in harmony with nature. Animals have the right to live, we like to to see plants happy and...

Biologische landbouw: Mens, Markt en Mogelijkheden Organic Eprints
De Cock, Lieve; Lauwers, Ludwig; Van Huylenbroeck, Guido; Krosenbrink, Erik; Govaerts, Wim; Calus, Mieke; Mondelaers, Koen; Verbeke, Wim; Kerselaers, Eva; Delvaux, Lionel.

Classification of land use data Organic Eprints
Baraibar, Barbara; Willer, Helga.
For the data collected under the 2007 global survey, the classification system developed for the 2006 survey was used, but slightly modified. When the 2006 survey began, FiBL did not yet have a classification system, as it was not known what kind of data would be available, if any (Baraibar 2006). As the data were collected, a classification system was developed according to the kind of data received. FiBL and SOEL are planning to improve the classification system and to ultimately bring it in line with classification systems that are currently being developed for organic farming.

Country Report on Organic Farming Research in Norway Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin; Schjøth, Johanne E..
To increase organic production and achieve the official aims, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food (until 2004: the Ministry of Agriculture) has developed a national policy specifically targeting organic farming. Organic farming is one out of seven topics to be prioritised for research funding. For this farming method, the Ministry considers the following needs to be of greatest importance: To reduce various biological and economical risks linked to production; to increase the diversity and quality of organic products in the market and the general knowledge of organic markets and consumers; and to increase the...

DEVELOPMENT OF THE ORGANIC SECTOR IN POST-SOCIALIST BULGARIA 1990-2013 Organic Eprints
Stoeva, Svetla; Slavova, Petya; Georgieva, Zdravka.
The aim of the paper is to present the socio-economic and political aspects in the development of organic sector in post-socialist Bulgaria. It will question the building up of the organic concept in terms of national policies, farming practices and market forces in the country. That topic has its scientific relevance at least in three crucial dimensions. Firstly, because the legacy of the socialist system significantly affected the structure of the agricultural sector as well as the entrepreneurial behavior of the rural population under conditions of transition. Secondly, the analysis is important because it helps to identify the internal (national) and the external (out of the national context) driving forces that influence the development of the...
