A motorized device for cracking pre-treated dika nuts 111
Ogundahunsi, Olufemi Emmanuel; Ogunsina, Babatunde Sunday; Ibrahim, Raheem O..
Cracking of dika nut has presented serious challenges to local processors considering the arduous task it constitutes during processing.  A motorized machine that is capable of multiple cracking of dika nuts was designed, fabricated and tested. The major components of the machine include a sliding hammer, a gear unit, a chain conveyor and cracking trays.  The experimental machine was evaluated on the basis of cracking efficiency and throughput considering three types of pre-treated nuts (sun-dried, oven-dried and roasted) and two nut sizes (small and big).  The cracking efficiency and throughput were: 65% and 8.84kg/h, 63% and 7.75kg/h, 45% and 5.67 kg/h for roasted, oven-dried and sun-dried small nuts; while the corresponding values for big nuts were: 72%...

Comparative performance evaluation of three coconut cracking devices with conventional cracking technique 111
BELLO, SEGUN RAPHAEL.
Performance evaluations of three coconut cracking devices was carried out and its results compared with the conventional (hand cracking technique) of hitting on hard surface. The three devices include a punch-split device, an impact-split device and hydraulic press split device which were developed at the Department of Agricultural & Bioenvironmental Engineering Technology, Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu.  Each technique was evaluated for output capacity, cracking efficiency, ergonomics, and time required to crack a unit of different grades of coconut. The average cracking efficiency for punch split was 87.09 per cent with a range of 86.76 to 95.00 per cent, impact split efficiency varied from 83.33 to 95.00 per cent with the average of...

Development of a Bush Mango (Irvingia Gabonensis) Nutcracker-6 111
Alonge, A.F..
This research work involves the design and fabrication of Irvingia nut cracking machines. It operates using impact technique which involves collision between the seednut and stationary wall. The procedures employed the design stage, fabrication and testing. The machine components are: impact drum, shaft, impeller (rotor), electric motor, driver and driven pulley and hopper. The cracking chamber consists of the impeller and impact drum. The seednuts were pre-treated before testing by sun-drying to improve its crackability. The machine gave a better performance at the speed of 2600 revolution per minute with average cracking efficiency, percentage kernel breakage and capacity of 88%, 17.5% and 916 nuts/hr. The improvement in the design can be achieved by...

DEVELOPMENT OF A VARIABLE SIZE NUT CRACKER 111
Ogundare, Adebayo; Ojolo, Sunday.
In this work, a variable size nut cracking machine has been designed and constructed to improve the efficiency of shelling operation of quite a number of nuts. The machine is designed to be adaptable to the cracking requirements of some number of nuts, whose shell can be processed to brittleness. The machine performs two operations, shelling of the nut and separation of the shell from the nut. The machine comprises of a hopper, rectangular box housing the cracking drum and compression plate, and a two stage agitated separating tray (to sort the nut from the shell), all supported by a frame. The cracking drum, which is driven by a v-belt connected to an electric motor, also provide the agitation to the separating tray via a v-belt connected a cam mounted...

Development of palm kernel nut cracking machine for rural use 111
Adisa, Alex Folami; Udo, Sunday Bassey; Ismaila, Salami Olasunkanmi; Adejuyigbe, Samuel Babatunde.
Common traditional techniques of breaking palm kernel nuts in rural areas where it is produced involved a lots of drudgery and hazard. The goal of this research work was to design, construct and test the performance of a palm kernel nut cracking machine for local use at affordable cost. Samples were test-ran, cracked and replicated at different shaft speeds (r/min). with developed machine. The results showed that the un-cracked nuts were 2.50%, 2.00%, 1.50%, 1.25% and 1.00 %, the partially cracked were 2.75%, 2.75%, 2.25%, 2.00% and 1.75 %, the un-broken kernels were 93%, 94%, 95%, 94.5% and 94 %, that of broken kernels were 1.75%, 1.50%, 1.50%, 2.50% and 3.25 % at set speeds of 800, 1200, 1600, 2000 and 2400 r/min respectively. The throughput of the...

Performance evaluation of a bush mango (irvingia gabonensis) nut cracking machine 111
AVIARA, NDUBISI A.; Iyilade, Idowu J.; Oyeniyi, Samuel K.; Aremu, Ademola K..
A bush mango (Irvingia gabonensis) nut handling machine was developed to ease the tedium involved in the cracking operation and enhance the efficiency of separating the kernels from hulls. The machine consists of a hopper, cracking unit barrel, electric motor, blower, tool frame, hull outlet and kernel outlet. It operates on the principle of impact using centrifugal force from the baffles on a spinning disc. Results of performance tests carried out using nuts at four moisture levels in the range of 7.52-20.6% (d.b) showed that percent effective cracking decreased, while percentage kernel breakage increased with increase in feed rate, moisture content and resident time of nuts in the cracking chamber. Winnowing efficiency increased with feed rate and...

PHYSICAL-MECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF Eucalyptus urophylla WOOD 70
Lahr,Francisco A. R.; Nogueira,Marta C. De J. A.; Araujo,Victor A. De; Vasconcelos,Juliano S.; Christoforo,André L..
ABSTRACT: Eucalyptus urophylla consists in a wood-producing species, which offers a natural multiple raw material of good quality for applications in rural and civil constructions. However, Eucalyptus urophylla still has a small utilization as building parts and elements, resulting from the possible ignorance and low diffusion of its structural possibilities. Thereby, the present research aims to measure the main thirteen mechanical properties of Eucalyptus urophylla wood for two different moisture contents, 12% and 30% (green wood). Furthermore, in these two conditions of moisture content evaluation, volumetric mass densities were also evaluated. At the end of this evaluation, which included 2688 determinations, all the obtained results were statistically...
