The slipper-limpet (Crepidula fornicata) is a marine gastropod which causes serious perturbations in shellfish beds, because of spatial spreading and density rising. Along French coasts, in Northern Brittany, two bays are highly colonized : bay of Saint-Brieuc, centre for scallops fishery, and bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, a famous oyster-farming area, with a total limpet stock about 450 000 metric tons. Bilan energetique d'une population naturelle de Crepidula fornicata dans le bassin de Marennes-Oleron ArchiMer

An energy budget has been evaluated for a natural population of Crepidula fornicata living at low water of spring tides in the oyster farming basin of Marennes-Oleron. This budget of production was estimated according to the position along the chain. The average biomass for an individual representative of the population was equivalent to 1.87 Kjoules, and the annual consumption C was 20.08 Kjoules/year. The energy budget expressed in percent of energy consummates was: C = Pg + Pr + Ps + R + F; 100 = 4.6 + 1.6 + 0.8 + 48 + 45. This budget is compared with literature data on other herbivorous gastropods and with those calculated for Crassostrea gigas in the same locality.

The slipper limpet Crepidula jornicata, gastropod introduced on the North East Atlantic coasts, is considered as an invasive species, especially in shellfish fmming areas in France. Slipper Iimpet populations have been estimated in Marennes Oléron Bay since 1980. In 1995, a sidescan sonar mapping associated to a quantitative estimation of the stocks by « grab » was carried out. Cartographie et évaluation des principaux mollusques filtreurs du Golfe Normano-Breton ArchiMer

During 1993 and 1994, quantitative sampling were realized in Norman Gulf (Western Channel) to estimate molluscs suspension-feeders. Four bivalves are regularly sampled : Spisula ovalis, Tapes rhomboides, Glycymeris glycymeris and Venus verrucosa. For each species, individual age and weight were noticed. The spreading gastropod Crepidula fornicata was also sampled. The resultant biomass and distribution are proposed. These results will contribute to the evaluation of trophic exchanges in boundary layer and to the proposed modeling, in the program PNOC (National Program for Coastal Oceanography). In 2003 and 2004, 3 cruises were organized using observations systems and sampling techniques to carry out cartography and stock assessment of the Slipper-limpet population (Crepidula fornicata) in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel (Western Channel). This was done as part of the National Programme of Coastal Environment (Programme National d'Environnement Côtier - PNEC). The study helped to update previous data collected in 1995-96 with similar techniques : side-scan-sonar and submarine video for observation, and scuba diving and grabs for samples collection. Competition for food in the larvae of two marine molluscs, Crepidula fornicata and Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer

The degree to which larvae of the invasive American slipper limpet (Crepidula fornicata) and the Japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas) may compete for food was examined during 2003 in the laboratory. Larval microalgae uptake, growth and mortality were compared for larvae fed each of six species of unicellular algae, ranging in length from 2 to 10 mu m. Dans le bassin de Marennes- Oléron , Crepidula fornicata a principalement colonisé trois secteurs (les bords du banc de Charret, le courant d'Oléron, les abords de l'Estrée) à des densités dépassant 2 500 individus au mètre carré, mais aussi présente de façon diffuse dans tout le nord du bassin. La biomasse estimée, pour les deux premiers secteurs, est d'environ 3 700 tonnes dont 1 500 tonnes ont été draguées et rejetées à terre en 1983. Des prélèvements dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron ont permis de localiser les fortes charges de Crepidula fornicata L. principalement dans le centre du bassin (le long du banc de Charret et dans le courant d'Oléron). En ces deux points la charge fraîche cumulée a été estimée à environ 2 700 tonnes. La structure de population fait apparaître une croissance moyenne de 20, 19, 17 et 12 millimètres respectivement pour les 1ère, 2ème, 3ème et 4ème années avec une variabilité très importante dès la première année. 74,5% des animaux constituent des chaines primaires d'en moyenne six individus fixés sur des coquilles de crépidules mortes. The reproduction of Crepidula fornicata occurs from the end of February to October. This reproduction determines two periods of juvenile settlement, the first early in June and the second early in October. Because of the lack of distinct cohorts, estimation of production and population dynamics was made according to the location of individuals in the chain. This was confirmed by the agreement between the growth rings of the shells and individual location in the chain. The main chain accounted for 80 per cent of individuals, the others being isolated or in collateral chains. Extensive and detailed subtidal ground mapping of the Marennes-Oleron Bay and Fouras-Aix areas was performed with a side-scan sonar. Side-scan sonographs gave a comprehensive view of sedimentological bottom environments and also allowed us to outline locations of grounds colonised by the gastropod mollusc Crepidula fornicata L. with a precise estimate of their surface. This study describes the effect of an invasive mollusc, the slipper limpet Crepidula fornicata, on the distribution and abundance of young-of-the-year sole Solea solea in coastal nursery areas, based on beam-trawl surveys in the Bay of Biscay (France) over a 3 yr period (2000 to 2002). As habitat suitability for juvenile sole varies according to bathymetry and sediment structure, these factors and the density of the slipper limpet were used as descriptors in generalised linear models of habitat suitability to characterise the distribution of juvenile sole. Etat de la prolifération de la crépidule (Crepidula fornicata L.) dans le secteur de Granville (Golfe Normano-Beton - 1985) ArchiMer

An area located between the Mont-St-Michel Bay and Jersey was monitored from 1984 to 1985. Limpet densities have been evaluated through quantitative sampling and underwater video. At the same time, some planktonic samplings have enabled the monitoring of the evolution of larval abundances. Maxima, planktonic and benthic density areas superpose each other. Moreover, the study of the populations shows that the number of young colonies is increasing, thus clearly indicating that Crepidula fornicata populating is booming in the Norman-Breton gulf.

Ce rapport final présente l’évaluation de la qualité microbiologique et chimique de la zone 35.01 pour le groupe I : crépidule (Crepidula fornicata), gastéropode filtreur. Aux vues de l’étendue de la zone d’étude (environ 20 km) et de sa position au large, la phase initiale de l’étude ne s’est pas attachée à la définition précise de l’ensemble des caractéristiques du littoral bordant la zone. This study presents four morphological criteria based on the shell, determined under a stereomicroscope, allowing the identification of the Calyptraeidae’s post larvae in Calyptraea chinensis and Crepidula fornicata from a 0.7mm size. The septum shape in C. chinensis is spiraled while in C. fornicata it is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the shell (beginning of the lodge’s formation), which constitutes the most reliable criterion when trying to discriminate between the species. To ensure sustainable uses of the coastal zone, an integrated ecosystemic approach and ecosystem models are required to frame ecological processes and evaluate environmental impacts. Here, a mass-balance trophic (Ecopath) model of the Mont Saint Michel Bay (MSMB) was developed, to analyze the bay's functioning as an ecosystem. This bay, intensively exploited by fishing and for shellfish farming, is also suffering from the proliferation of the gastropod Crepidula fornicata, an exotic species.
