A Diagnosis of Biophysical and Socio-Economic Factors Influencing Farmers’ Choice to Adopt Organic or Conventional Farming Systems for Cotton Production Organic Eprints
Riar, Amritbir; Mandloi, Lokendra S.; Poswal, Randhir S.; Messmer, Monika M.; Bhullar, Gurbir S..
Organic agriculture is one of the most widely known alternative production systems advocated for its benefits to soil, environment, health and economic well-being of farming communities. Rapid increase in the market demand for organic products presents a remarkable opportunity for expansion of organic agriculture. A thorough understanding of the context specific motivations of farmers for adoption of organic farming systems is important so that appropriate policy measures are put in place. With an aim of understanding the social and biophysical motivations of organic and conventional cotton farmers for following their respective farming practices, a detailed farm survey was conducted in Nimar valley of Madhya Pradesh state in central India. The study area...

A framework for assessing crop production from rotations Organic Eprints
Topp, Cairistiona F E; Doyle, Chris J; Watson, Christine A.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference of the Colloquium of Organic Researchers (COR). Organic farming systems rely on the management of biological cycles for the provision of nutrients, which are crucial to maximising the production from the system. Rotations based on the use of grass-legume leys are central to the concept of organic farming systems, because they have the potential to support both animal production, and a subsequent, exploitative, arable cropping phase. A major challenge in organic farming is managing the supply of nitrogen, since it has a key role in governing both productivity and environmental impact. Hence, within a rotational system, there is a need to understand the complex interactions that are...

A PRACTICE APPLICABLE MODEL FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF MANAGEMENT IMPACT ON ORGANIC MATTER IN ARABLE SOILS Organic Eprints
Brock, Christopher; Leithold, Günter.
We present the HU-MOD-2 model for the assessment of management impact on organic matter levels in arable soils. The model aims at optimal applicability as a management support tool in framing practice and therefore requires only easily available input data. In validation, the tool proved to be capable of giving a rough estimate on soil organic matter changes in arable soils. Taking into account the low demand for input data, the modeling error seems tolerable for a practice applicable decision support tool.

A win-win for legume mixtures Organic Eprints
Döring, Thomas F.; Crowley, Oliver; Pearce, Helen; Storkey, Jonathan; Brown, Rob; Jones, Hannah.
The inter-relationship between food production and biodiversity is now well established. The ecosystem services provided by the organisms within the environment include, for example, nutrient cycling, pest regulation and pollination, to name but a few. However, perhaps the greatest challenge now facing agricultural production is to find ways of enhancing these ecosystem services, while at the same time increasing food production – particularly in light of food security issues. A range of farm and landscape management options include ‘setting aside’ land for wildlife. However, some proponents argue that such land should be used for food production. While the debate continues, there is no doubt that a large body of scientific evidence from the last three...

Nauta, Wytze J.; Cuijpers, Willemijn J.M.; Staps, J.J.M.; Scholberg, Johannes.

ABOVEGROUND WOODY BIOMASS PRODUCTION OF DIFFERENT TREE SPECIES IN SILVOARABLE AGROFORESTRY SYTEMS WITH ORGANIC AND INTEGRATED CULTIVATION IN SOUTHERN GERMANY Organic Eprints
Huber, Julia; Siegel, Thomas; Schmid, Harald; Hülsbergen, Kurt-Jürgen.
The increasing demand for bioenergy and the combination of agricultural production with conservation has made agroforestry to a sustainable land-management option. Aboveground woody biomass plays a decisive role considering the economic value of the agroforestry systems as well as the carbon storage. With the objective to study aboveground woody biomass production of agroforestry systems with different cultivation methods (organic/ integrated), short rotation plantations of different tree species were established 2009 and coppiced in 2012. The studied tree species were black alder (Alnus glutinosa), black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), poplar “Max 3”, (Populus maximowiczii x Populus nigra) and willow “Inger” (Salix triandra x Salix viminalis). At the end...

Achieving Social and Economic Development Through Ecological and Organic Agricultural Alternatives Organic Eprints
The third edition of the continental conference (3AOC) is holding in Nigeria October 5 – 9, 2015 with the theme “Achieving Social and Economic Development Through Ecological and Organic Agricultural Alternatives”. This conference is coming up in the continent when the call for need to improve rural livelihoods of Africans is becoming louder by the day. A veritable tool through which the livelihood of an average African can be improved is Organic Agriculture because it has an inherent potential to reduce production costs regularly incurred by small-medium scale farmers (principal actors in African agriculture), reduce debts, increase income, mitigate the vagaries of climate change, cope with market fluctuations, sustain soil fertility, minimize health...

Ackerkratzdistel: Im Biobetrieb dauerhaft regulieren Organic Eprints
Dierauer, Hansueli; Kranzler, Andreas; Ebert, Ulrich.

Activity theoretical view on crop rotation planning in organic vegetable farming Organic Eprints
Seppänen, Laura.
Crop rotation is an essential basis of an organic farming system. An activity theoretical concept of object shall be used in examining planning processes of crop rotations. Farmers' object construction means their creating and maintaining the social meaning and purpose of the material farming activity. I shall assume the farmers´ object construction in planning crop rotations to reflect their overall object in organic vegetable farming. First, this paper examines theoretically the object in organic vegetable farming by devising a framework of different types of object constructions. Second, two farms with organic vegetable production will be described, and the farmers´ objects will be shown in the light of the histories of the farms. This will show...
