Crop loading studies on ‘Caricia’ and ‘Eva’ apples grown in a mild winter area Scientia Agricola

The crop load level of an apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.) tree impacts fruit yield and quality parameters, tree vigor and biennial bearing. The optimal crop load is that which allows for consistent annual cropping and fruit quality acceptable to the market. We evaluated the effect of crop load on yield and fruit quality of two low-chill apples cv. ‘Caricia’ and ‘Eva’, growing in a mild winter area. During 2010 and 2011 crop load was manually adjusted from 2 or 3 to 17 fruits cm−2 of trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA). Fruit yield was positively related to crop load in both cultivars but mean fruit weight diminished as the crop load increased. The Precision Crop Load management protocol, which was used by some growers in 2013, consisted of first defining the optimum fruit number/tree (target fruit number) and then pruning to reduce flower bud numbers to 1.5 times the target fruit number. Chemical thinning consists of applying sequential thinning sprays (with rates and timing guided by the carbohydrate balance model and the fruit growth rate model to assess thinning efficacy). The program was successful in guiding chemical thinning decisions in 2013.

Abstract In 2013 we thinned mature "Royal Gala" apple trees on M.9 rootstock using the precision thinning protocol developed by Robinson. To assess the initial flower bud load we counted the number of flower buds on 5 trees per treatment at the pink bud stage. We then thinned the trees with one of 2 thinning protocols using sequential chemical thinning sprays: 1) Promalin (benzyl adenine + GA 4+7 ) at full bloom (FB) followed by three successive sprays of benzyl adenine (BA)+carbaryl at petal fall, 12 mm fruit size and 18 mm fruit size; 2) BA at FB then three sprays of BA + carbaryl at petal fall, 12 and 18 mm; and 3) untreated control.
