Agricultural Impacts of Biofuels Production AgEcon
Walsh, Marie E.; Torre Ugarte, Daniel de la; English, Burton C.; Jensen, Kimberly L.; Hellwinckel, Chad M.; Menard, R. Jamey; Nelson, Richard G..
Analysis of the potential to supply 25% of projected 2025 U.S. transportation fuels indicates sufficient biomass resources are available to meet increased demand while simultaneously meeting food, feed, and export needs. Corn and soybeans continue to be important feedstocks for ethanol and biodiesel production, but cellulose feedstocks (agricultural crop residues, energy crops such as switchgrass, and forestry residues) will play a major role. Farm income increases, mostly because of higher crop prices. Increased crop prices increase the cost of producing biofuels.

Allelopathic effects of orange (Citrus sinensis L.) peel essential oil Acta Botanica
Ribeiro,Jose Pedro Nepomuceno; Lima,Maria Inês Salgueiro.
Crop weeds are the main problem in agriculture, causing a worldwide annual loss of about US$95 billion. The principal method for control is the use of synthetic herbicides. The continued use of these products increases crop costs, reduces crop quality, and leaves toxic residues in the environment, which are a threat to human and livestock health. Therefore, there is a demand for environmentally friendly methods of weed control. The use of allelopathic compounds from crop residues is an alternative. Orange is one of the biggest crops in the world, and its cultivation generates large amounts of residues. There is strong evidence of bioactivity in orange peel essential oil. Therefore, the objective in this work was to verify the allelopathic proprieties of...

Carbon dioxide enrichment effects on the decomposition of sugarcane residues. Repositório Alice
RAMOS, N. P.; VIDAL, T. A.; RAMOS, R.; ROSSETTO, R.; NECHET, K. de L..
Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the decomposition dynamics of sugarcane residue under conditions of enriched atmospheric CO2 concentration using a FACE facility (Free-Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment). The experiment, conducted in Jaguariúna, São Paulo State, Brazil, using the ClimapestFACE facility, received two treatments: elevated CO2 (550±100 ?mol mol-1) and ambient CO2 (400 ?mol mol-1), for a single amount (5 t ha-1) of straw (cane trash), in a randomized-block design with six replications. Decomposition was determined by using litter bags with sampling at 0, 14, 36, 60, 90, 119, 179, 291 and 362 days after commencement and determining the remaining biomass (kg ha-1), decomposition rate (%), constant k(kg.day-1) and half-life (t½) of...

The maintenance of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) straw on a soil surface increases the soil carbon (C) stocks, but at lower rates than expected. This fact is probably associated with the soil management adopted during sugarcane replanting. This study aimed to assess the impact on soil C stocks and the humification index of soil organic matter (SOM) of adopting no-tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) for sugarcane replanting. A greater C content and stock was observed in the NT area, but only in the 0-5 cm soil layer (p < 0.05). Greater soil C stock (0-60 cm) was found in soil under NT, when compared to CT and the baseline. While C stock of 116 Mg ha-1 was found in the baseline area, in areas under CT and NT systems the values ranged from 120 to 127...

Characterization and evaluation of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) pod husk as a renewable energy source Agrociencia
Martínez-Ángel,J. Daniel; Villamizar-Gallardo,R. Amanda; Ortíz-Rodríguez,O. Orlando.
In Colombia, the cocoa pod husk (CPH) is expected to reach 2 100 000 t year-1 in 2021 which is usually burned or left over for decomposing outdoors at the plantations without any environmental control. Therefore, this study evaluated the energetic potential of CPH obtained after the initial processing of this fruit (Theobroma cacao L.). Three biological materials were analyzed: clone CCN-51 (CPH1), clone ICS-39 (CPH2) and a hybrid (CPH3), which present high yield and number of fruits per tree. The samples were examined by using different characterization techniques for raw biomass and ashes; in addition to the ultimate, proximate and heating value analyses, different fouling indexes were determined in order to estimate the phenomena of solids formation...

Ethanol and a Changing Agricultural Landscape AgEcon
Malcolm, Scott A.; Aillery, Marcel P.; Weinberg, Marca.
The Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007 established specific targets for the production of biofuel in the United States. Until advanced technologies become commercially viable, meeting these targets will increase demand for traditional agricultural commodities used to produce ethanol, resulting in land-use, production, and price changes throughout the farm sector. This report summarizes the estimated effects of meeting the EISA targets for 2015 on regional agricultural production and the environment. Meeting EISA targets for ethanol production is estimated to expand U.S. cropped acreage by nearly 5 million acres by 2015, an increase of 1.6 percent over what would otherwise be expected. Much of the growth comes from corn acreage, which...

Evolution of maize residues into SOM in a study of two years incubation. Repositório Alice
SONG, G. X.; NOVOTNY, E. H.; HAYES, M. H. B..
Maize (Zea mays, a C4 plant) stover was incubated in a long-term cultivated soil for 24 months in order to better understand the transformation of crop residues into soil organic matter. Humic fractions, including humin, were isolated using an exhaustive sequential extraction procedure based on the charge density and polarity differences of the humic substances: Repetitive aqueous NaOH extraction was carried out at pH 7, 10.6, 12.6, and with 0.5 M NaOH. Then, an exhaustive 0.1 M NaOH + 6 M urea solution was applied to the soil residue to isolate the soluble 'urea humin' fraction. All isolates were further fractionated by the XAD-8 and XAD-4 resin-in-tandem procedure. Finally a concentrated suphuric acid plus DMSO solvent was employed to the fine clay to...
