Analysis of the potential to supply 25% of projected 2025 U.S. transportation fuels indicates sufficient biomass resources are available to meet increased demand while simultaneously meeting food, feed, and export needs. Corn and soybeans continue to be important feedstocks for ethanol and biodiesel production, but cellulose feedstocks (agricultural crop residues, energy crops such as switchgrass, and forestry residues) will play a major role. Farm income increases, mostly because of higher crop prices. Increased crop prices increase the cost of producing biofuels. |

ABSTRACT Autumn maize intercropped with tropical forages can raise the amount of crop residues and improve nutrient cycling, favoring subsequent soybean crop. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of forms of implementation of intercropping of irrigated autumn maize with tropical forages on yield, decomposition, nutrient accumulation and release, and on the ratio of lignin/total N of forage residues, yield components, and grain yield of subsequent soybean, and on soil physical and chemical properties, under no-tillage in lowland Cerrado. The experiment was arranged in randomized blocks in a factorial (4 × 3 + 1) design with one control and four replications. The treatments consisted of four forages: Palisade grass, Congo grass, and two... |

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the decomposition dynamics of sugarcane residue under conditions of enriched atmospheric CO2 concentration using a FACE facility (Free-Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment). The experiment, conducted in Jaguariúna, São Paulo State, Brazil, using the ClimapestFACE facility, received two treatments: elevated CO2 (550±100 ?mol mol-1) and ambient CO2 (400 ?mol mol-1), for a single amount (5 t ha-1) of straw (cane trash), in a randomized-block design with six replications. Decomposition was determined by using litter bags with sampling at 0, 14, 36, 60, 90, 119, 179, 291 and 362 days after commencement and determining the remaining biomass (kg ha-1), decomposition rate (%), constant k(kg.day-1) and half-life (t½) of... |

The maintenance of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) straw on a soil surface increases the soil carbon (C) stocks, but at lower rates than expected. This fact is probably associated with the soil management adopted during sugarcane replanting. This study aimed to assess the impact on soil C stocks and the humification index of soil organic matter (SOM) of adopting no-tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) for sugarcane replanting. A greater C content and stock was observed in the NT area, but only in the 0-5 cm soil layer (p < 0.05). Greater soil C stock (0-60 cm) was found in soil under NT, when compared to CT and the baseline. While C stock of 116 Mg ha-1 was found in the baseline area, in areas under CT and NT systems the values ranged from 120 to 127... |

Anatomical, chemical, and biodegradation properties of fibers from wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), rice (Oryza sativa L.), and corn (Zea mays L.) plant residues and from rice hull were characterized to generate scientific and technical knowledge to support decision making regarding their use. The anatomical and chemical properties were determined following standard procedures. The degree of biodeterioration was analyzed from growth of white rot fungus Pleurotus ostreatus (Jaq.) Quél. in 30 d under favorable conditions. Afterwards, weight loss was evaluated for each residue. Three replicates were used, plus a control of radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) woodchips. The greatest proportion of a-cellulose was found in residues of rice plants (45.1%), with a... |

With the objective to study the control of Brachiaria decumbens and Panicum maximum by herbicide S-metolachlor as influenced by the time interval between the herbicide application the occurrence of rain and the amount of sugarcane straw on the soil, two experiments were conducted in pots under greenhouse conditions. In the first, the factors were the amount of sugarcane straw left on the soil surface (0, 3, 6, 10, or 15 ton. ha-1) and the S-metolachlor applied at doses of 0, 0.96, 1.44, 1.92, or 2.40 kg ha-1. In the second, the factors were the amount of sugarcane straw left on the soil surface (0 or 10 ton. ha-1), the interval of time elapsed between the application of S-metolachlor and simulated rain, which took place 1 day before and 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, or... |

Maize (Zea mays, a C4 plant) stover was incubated in a long-term cultivated soil for 24 months in order to better understand the transformation of crop residues into soil organic matter. Humic fractions, including humin, were isolated using an exhaustive sequential extraction procedure based on the charge density and polarity differences of the humic substances: Repetitive aqueous NaOH extraction was carried out at pH 7, 10.6, 12.6, and with 0.5 M NaOH. Then, an exhaustive 0.1 M NaOH + 6 M urea solution was applied to the soil residue to isolate the soluble 'urea humin' fraction. All isolates were further fractionated by the XAD-8 and XAD-4 resin-in-tandem procedure. Finally a concentrated suphuric acid plus DMSO solvent was employed to the fine clay to... |
