Adaptive Management Planning Projects as Conflict Resolution Processes Ecology and Society
Walkerden, Greg; Macquarie University; gmw@bwassociates.com.au.
Adaptive management planning projects use multiparty, multidisciplinary workshops and simulation modeling to facilitate dialogue, negotiation, and planning. However, they have been criticized as a poor medium for conflict resolution. Alternative processes from the conflict resolution tradition, e.g., principled negotiation and sequenced negotiation, address uncertainty and biophysical constraints much less skillfully than does adaptive management. When we evaluate adaptive management planning using conflict resolution practice as a benchmark, we can design better planning procedures. Adaptive management planning procedures emerge that explore system structure, dynamics, and uncertainty, and that also provide a strong negotiation process, grounded in...

Brief history of Eucalyptus breeding in Brazil under perspective of biometric advances Ciência Rural
Castro,Carla Aparecida de Oliveira; Resende,Rafael Tassinari; Bhering,Leonardo Lopes; Cruz,Cosme Damião.
ABSTRACT: Forest breeding is a science that has been developing in Brazil since 1941 being the Eucalyptus a highlighted genus in this scenario. In a global scene, Brazil is displayed prominently in productivity of Eucalyptus planting, due to favorable environmental conditions to cultivation development, and the incentive in research for improvement of traits of interest t observed in it species and hybrids. This research included a historical review of Eucalyptus breeding over the years under genetic biometric perspective in Brazil, from reports describing the pioneer planting up to the current genome wide selection (GWS) that came as a complement of forest breeding success. This review showed some of the tracks performed by researchers aiming to improve...

SANTOS, C. A. F..

ABSTRACT The objective was to evaluate the influence of calving and postpartum characteristics, measured in different genetic predominance, on the postpartum rebreeding. Were evaluated 437 partum from cows that received feeding management consisting of a forage base of the native field and the mating season consisted of 90 days. The measurements were used from the data base (age of cow, genetic predominance, body weight, body condition score and date of calving) of the cows in the partum and postpartum period. The variables were submitted to analysis of multiple variances, multiple regression, correlation and cluster. Already the groups formed by cluster analysis were submitted to analysis of variance and F test and the means, compared by Student’s t-test,...

Performance and carcass characteristics of Santa Inês pure lambs and crosses with Dorper e Texel at different management systems R. Bras. Zootec.
Garcia,Iraides Ferreira Furusho; Costa,Tharcilla Isabella Rodrigues; Almeida,Amélia Katiane de; Pereira,Idalmo Garcia; Alvarenga,Flávio Augusto Pereira; Lima,Natália Ludmila Lins.
It was evaluated the performance and the carcass characteristics of 36 non-castrated male lambs, Santa Inês purebreed and crossbreeds from Dorper × Santa Inês and Texel × Santa Inês, managed in three different systems (intensive, semi-intensive and extensive), slaughtered at 38.41 ± 1.24 kg. It was observed the highest weight gain for lambs reared in intensive system, which also showed the greatest carcass yield. The management systems did not influence carcass measures of animals in intensive system much because of the greater weight of the carcass. The intensive system provided the best performance, regardless the genetic group. The use of Texel and Dorper breeds in crossings with Santa Inês increases carcass yield.

Vargas Junior,Fernando Miranda de; Wechsler,Francisco Stefano; Oliveira,Marcus Vinicius Morais de; Seno,Leonardo de Oliveira; Fernandes,Alexandre Rodrigo Mendes; Camilo,Fernando Rossi.
The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of genetic group (GG) of the calf during gestation, mobilization of body reserves and period of postpartum anestrus in Nellore cows. Thirty-seven primiparous and multiparous cows were used: 24 gave birth to Nellore (NEL), and 13 gave birth to ½ Simmental × ½ Nellore (SIM) calves. According to the date of calving, cows were divided into three blocks, with intervals of 20 days between blocks. The body condition (BC) of the cows was estimated subjectively on a scale from 0 to 5 points, with intermediate grading of 0.5 points. We measured the thickness of subcutaneous fat (SF) between the 12th and 13th ribs and rump by ultrasound. Blood samples from each cow were collected weekly from the third week...

Voluntary intake of dry matter and performance of Nellore cows and their Nellore and crossbred Simental × Nellore calves R. Bras. Zootec.
Vargas Junior,Fernando Miranda de; Wechsler,Francisco Stefano; Rossi,Patrícia; Oliveira,Marcus Vinicius Morais de; Schmidt,Patrick.
This study aimed to investigate the influence of calf genetic group on the performance of Nellore lactating cows. The variables studied included milk ingestion, pasture intake, calf weight gain and cow body weight. A total of 13 Nellore calves and 8 crossbred Simental × Nellore calves were used, all born from Nellore mothers. During the experimental period of 210 days, calves were weighted at birth and at 30-day intervals, whereas cows were weighed every 14 days. Milk intake was estimated using the weigh-suckle-weigh method. Pasture intake was determined 6, 12, and 24 weeks after birth by using chromic oxide as an external marker and indigestible acid detergent fiber as an internal marker. Average weight of crossbred calves was 10.1 kg and their milk...
