General principIes of cryosurgery in the treatment of tumors in small animals: literature review MV&Z
de Queiroz, Genilson Fernandes; Matera, Julia Maria.
Objective: To disclose the technique, equipment, mechanism of action, indications, advantages and disadvantages, complication and/or after-effects of cryosurgery in treatment of lesions. Data Sources: Data search was carried out in data base systems of CAB and MEDLINE over a 30-year term. Data Synthesis: Cryosurgery consists of the treatment of lesions through freezing (liquid nitrogen at -196° C).It has been used in medicine for the treatment of skin, liver, kidneys, prostate and oral cavity neoplasias. In. veterinary medicine it is still not broadly known and literature lacks information as to its application. It is an easily performed procedure, requiring however knowledge of the technique, of indications and possible complications and after-effects....

Morphometric and Fractal Analysis of Injured Skeletal Muscle Tissue Subjected to A Combination of Treatments; Cryotherapy and Therapeutic Ultrasound International Journal of Morphology
Koike,Tatiana Emy; Camargo,Regina Celi Trindade; Ozaki,Guilherme Akio Tamura; Castoldi,Robson Chacon; Seraphim,Patrícia Monteiro; Oikawa,Sérgio Minoro; Camargo Filho,José Carlos Silva.
The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of an association of cryotherapy and therapeutic ultrasound on the treatment of muscle injured by impact. Fifty-five Wistar rats were divided into five groups (n = 11), Acute Injury (AI), Injury (I), Cryotherapy (CR), Therapeutic Ultrasound (TU) and Association of Cryotherapy and Therapeutic Ultrasound (CRTU). The CR and CRTU groups received applications of Cryotherapy three times (immediately, 24 and 48 h after injury) of 20 minutes duration. The TU and CRTU groups received applications of Therapeutic Ultrasound for seven days, for five minutes, in pulsed mode, 0.5 w/cm intensity, frequency 1 MHz. Body mass and gastrocnemius mass were analyzed. In addition to histological slides stained with hematoxylin and...

Pedicle frozen autograft for limb sparing surgery in a dog with femoral osteosarcoma Ciência Rural
Gouvêa,Aline Silva; Lichtler,Juliana; Scherer,Simone; Mombach,Verônica Santos; Reis,Kauê Danilo Helene Lemos dos; Gonzalez,Paula Cristina Sieczkowski; Sonne,Luciana; Alievi,Marcelo Meller.
ABSTRACT: Osteosarcoma (OSA) is the most common bone tumor diagnosed in dogs and represents approximately 85% of canine skeletal tumors. The most commonly employed therapy is amputation of the limb followed by chemotherapy. However, preservation of the afflicted limb has been successful for patients with concomitant neurological or orthopedic conditions, which are contraindications to the complete amputation, or with owners reluctant to the possibility of amputation. For these reasons, the purpose of this study was to describe the technical procedures that allowed limb salvage through the use of pedicle frozen grafts in a dog with femoral OSA. Surgical procedures consisted of a femoral diaphyseal osteotomy with tearing of the soft tissues; thus, creating a...

The effect of intermittent cryotherapy on the activities of citrate synthase and lactate dehydrogenase in regenerating skeletal muscle BABT
Oliveira,Nuno Miguel Lopes de; Durigan,João Luiz Quagliotti; Munin,Flávia Simone; Schwantes,Maria Luiza Barcelos; Salvini,Tania de Fátima.
This study examined the effect of three sessions of cryotherapy (three sessions of 30 minutes applied each 2 h) and muscle compression in the regenerating skeletal muscle of the rats. The middle belly of tibialis anterior muscle was injured by a frozen iron bar and received one of the following intervention: injury + cryotherapy (treated with cryotherapy); injury + placebo (sand pack), and injury (I).The enzymatic activities of citrate synthase (CS) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were measured in the presence of 1mM or 10mM pyruvate. The ANOVA and Tukey's test (p<0.05) were performed for the statistical analysis. In summary, the intermittent sessions of cryotherapy, associated to muscle compression and applied immediately after the primary muscle...
