Affecting cucurbit hormonal status by a ZYMV transient expression vector National Institute of Agronomic Research

Squash and cucumber plants were infected with ZYMV strains engineered to over-express enzymes involved in ethylene and gibberellin biosynthesis. Presence of the inserted ACS gene within the viral RNA was transient and the insert was deleted after 20-40 days. Ethylene over-expressing plants produced very high ethylene levels and were severely stunted. Monoecious cucumbers produced earlier, consecutive female flowers. Gibberellin over-expression was deduced from the observed phenotypic change, plants were taller and flowered earlier.

The most effective and straightforward way of plant protection is the production of cucumber hybrids with resistance to multiple diseases. Therefore, breeding of cucumber hybrids with a combination of defensive traits is a major objective. The accurate choice of parental lines is the first step towards development of successful hybrids. A variety of methods were used in order to speed up the process of inbred line development: a range of various planting times, planting in greenhouses and hot beds, screening of germplasm for disease resistances under artificial inoculation as well as natural field conditions, high selection pressure, backcrossing, multi-stage hybridization. Abstract: Automate drip irrigation in greenhouse was conducted at Elhssen Agriculture Authriuts, Giza governorate, Egypt. The aim of this researcher is to use the new Laser Leaf Control Unit (LLCU) as a tool to operate the automate drip irrigation system in greenhouse. The effectiveness of several media soil-sand-pertile (1:1:1 v/v); soil-sand-pertile-manure (1:1:1:3); soil-sand-perlite-compost (1:1:1:3); soil-sand-perlite-peat (1:1:1:3); soil-sand-perlite-straw (1:1:1:3), and sand-perlite-peat-compost-mamure-wheat straw (2:2:1:3:3:1) as suppressers of the cucumber (Cucumis sativus) damping-off causal agent, Pythium ultimum, was evaluated. Controlling Pythium damping-off in cucumber with manure. Repositório Alice

Different concentrations (0,10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% v/v) of manure (pH 7.90; P%=0.525; N%=1.44; C%=3.52; K%=1.57; Ca%=1.09; Mg%=3.2) were added to a substrate consisting of perlite:vermiculite:peat:sand (2:1:2:1), with or without 10 g of NPK fertiliser (12:12:12) in 500 ml pots. These pots were randomized distributed in a growth chamber with five replications for each manure and fertilizer concentration. Cucumber breeding and genomics: Potential from research with Cucumis hystrix National Institute of Agronomic Research

Cucumis hystrix Chakr. (2n=2x=24) is a wild Cucumis species found in Yunnan (China) having cross compatibility with cultivated cucumber (C. sativus L., 2n=2x=14). Since the first interspecific hybridization successfully made in 1995 and development of the synthetic allotetraploid species (C. X hytivus Chen and Kirkbride, 2n=4x=38) in 2000, experiments with C. hystrix and the progenies derived from this interspecific cross were carried out for the potentials in cucumber genetics and cultivar improvements. In the breeding programs from VRDS Bacau, Romania, two gynoecious cucumber hybrids (Cucumis sativus L.), cornichon type, were obtained. The breeding methods utilized is the hybridization of two gynoecious stable and uniform lines with two monoecious parental lines. The researches fulfilled with the purpose of determining the behavior of two gynoecious hybrids obtained at VRDS Bacau in open field and plastic tunnels culture, revealed the potential production and fruits quality at the hybrids ‘Cornişa F1’ and ‘Cornibac F1’.

Detection of cucumber parthenogenic haploid embryos by floating of immature seeds in liquid medium National Institute of Agronomic Research

Only a small percentage of seeds arisen by irradiated pollen include haploid embryo. Inspecting the seeds one by one for rescuing the embryos is a tedious and time consuming work which decreases haploid production efficiency in this method for cucurbit plants. Cucumber seeds formed three weeks after pollination with irradiated pollen were floated in liquid medium for about 10 days before excision of the embryos. This innovative method allowed a better development of haploid embryos; they turned to green and germinate like normal seeds and could be identified easily without the need of inspecting the seeds one by one. Development and characterization of Cucumis sativus-hystrix introgression lines exhibiting resistance to downy mildew National Institute of Agronomic Research

Stable C. sativus-hystrix introgression lines with fourteen chromosomes, derived from the interspecific hybridization between a wild relative of cultivated cucumber C. hystrix (2n=2x=24, HH) and a Chinese cucumber 'Beijingjietou' (C. sativus L., 2n=2x=14, CC) were characterized using morphological, cytological, and SSR analysis. In morphology, those introgression lines were characterized to have small-sized leaf, short fruit, and multi-branching habit which were closer to the wild parent (C. hystrix), and to have a fertility as high as that of cultivated cucumber. Turkey is very rich in cucurbit genetic resources due to its diverse geographical and ecological situation. Turkey is one of the important diversity centers for cultivated cucurbits because of the adaptation to diverse ecological conditions as result of natural selection and also the farmers selection in accordance with their preference. National collection of Cucurbitaceae species at National Gene Bank of Turkey (AARI) consists of 2223 accessions. Collecting activities have been systematically conducted since early 1960s. 25.7 % of this amount is melon, 20.5 % is Cucurbita spp., 16.1 % is watermelon, 13.4 % is cucumber, 7.7 % is bottle gourd, 7.2 % is squash, 4.2 % is winter squash, 3.3 % is snake melon, 1.3 % is pumpkin, 0.3 % is other cucumbers, 0.2 %...

How does the first fruit inhibit younger fruit set in cucurbits? National Institute of Agronomic Research

In this study we describe the inhibitory effect exerted by developing cucumber fruits on later-developing ovaries. Such pollinated ovaries do not set fruit but do not degenerate readily, remaining in a "stand-by" state that can be reversed when older fruits are removed. An increase in fruit set and decrease in inhibition was obtained by exogenous gibberellin and cytokinin treatment, and to a lesser extent by auxin. A decrease in transcript levels of genes expressed during fruit set was apparent in inhibited ovaries.
