Anphira guianensis sp. nov. (Isopoda, Cymothoidae) from the gills of Acnodon oligacanthus Eigenmann (Pisces, Serrasalmidae) of French Guiana Zoologia
Thatcher,Vernon E..
Anphira guianensis sp. nov. (Isopoda, Cymothoidae) is described from the branchial cavity of a freshwater fish, Acnodon oligacanthus Eigenmann, 1903 from French Guiana. The new species differs from the other known species of the genus in a number of important respects. Adult females are less convex than those of the other two known species and the mouth points downward. The coxal plates are largest posteriorly, unlike those of the other species. The antennule is much stouter and longer than the antenna whereas in the other species these appendages are subequal. Additionally, the dactyls of the new species are much longer.

Cymothoa frontalis, a cymothoid isopod parasitizing the belonid fish Strongylura strongylura from the Malabar Coast (Kerala, India): redescription, description, prevalence and life cycle ArchiMer
Thamban, Aneesh Panakkool; Kappalli, Sudha; Kottarathil, Helna Ameri; Gopinathan, Anilkumar; Paul, Trilles Jean.
Background: Cymothoa frontalis Milne Edward, 1840 is a very poorly described cymothoid, notwithstanding the previous redescription of the female. Pertinently, to date, the host of C. frontalis has not been identified with adequate precision. Most of the descriptions of cymothoids carried out hitherto were based primarily on females, but practically ignoring other life cycle stages. The present paper redescribes the female and describes other life cycle stages of the species C. frontalis to get better precision in their identification. Results: The female phase of C. frontalis is redescribed according to type specimens extant in the NMNH, Paris, and also by the data obtained from live specimens collected during the present study. The general morphology and...

Host-parasite interactions between the piranha Pygocentrus nattereri (Characiformes: Characidae) and isopods and branchiurans (Crustacea) in the rio Araguaia basin, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Carvalho,Lucélia Nobre; Arruda,Rafael; Del-Claro,Kleber.
In the tropics, studies on the ecology of host-parasite interactions are incipient and generally related to taxonomic aspects. The main objective of the present work was to analyze ecological aspects and identify the metazoan fauna of ectoparasites that infest the piranha, Pygocentrus nattereri. In May 2002, field samples were collected in the rio Araguaia basin, State of Goiás (Brazil). A total of 252 individuals of P. nattereri were caught with fishhooks and 32.14% were infested with ectoparasite crustaceans. The recorded ectoparasites were branchiurans, Argulus sp. and Dolops carvalhoi and the isopods Braga patagonica, Anphira branchialis and Asotana sp. The prevalence and mean intensity of branchiurans (16.6% and 1.5, respectively) and isopods (15.5%...

Isonebula acanthopleon sp.n. (Isopoda, Cymothoidae) nuevo ectoparásito de peces curimátidos Zoologia
Taberner,Roberto.
lsonebula acanthopleon a new species is described and illustrated from specimens of both sexes. The species name refers to the pointed process of the 5th pleonite. Its known hosts are Cyphocharax platanus (Günther, 1880), C. voga (Hensel, 1869) and C. spilotus (Vari, 1987) of the family Curitmatidae (Pisces).

Parasitism of the isopod Riggia puyensis Rodríguez-Haro et al. in two armored catfish from Pastaza Province (Ecuador) Anais da ABC (AABC)
PLAUL,SILVIA E.; RODRÍGUEZ-HARO,CECILIA; MARTORELLI,SERGIO R.; BARBEITO,CLAUDIO G..
Abstract: Riggia puyensis, an ectoparasitic isopod, was collected in juvenile Chaetostoma breve and Chaetostoma microps host specimens from the Amazonian region of Ecuador. The aim of this work is to study the possible injury that the parasite causes in its host. R. puyensis was found covered by a fold of the skin, which formed a sort of pocket or pouch within the host’s peritoneal cavity. The alterations described in the epidermis were associated with the mechanical action of the isopod inside the pouch.

Riggia cryptocularis sp. nov. (Isopoda, Cymothoidae) from the body cavity of a freshwater fish of Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil Zoologia
Thatcher,Vernon E.; Lopes,Luiza Paula de Conceição; Froehlich,Otavio.
Riggia cryptocularis sp. nov. (Isopoda, Cymothoidae) is described on the basis of one female and one male specimen from the body cavity of freshwater fish from Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. The new species is similar in size to R. paranensis Szidat, 1948, but differs from that species in the following respects. The body shapes are different since the widest part of the adult female is more anterior in R. paranensis. The eyes of the new species are covered and non-functional unlike those of the other species. The cephalon of the new species has a postero-dorsal elevation and a rounded and depressed frons which are lacking in the other species. Pereonites 5-7 are subequal in length in the new species and decrease in length in R. paranensis. The...
