Medium-term effects of repeated exposure to stray voltage on activity, stress physiology, and milk production and composition in dairy cows Inra
Rigalma, K.; Duvaux-Ponter, C.; Barrier, A.; Charles, C.; Ponter, A.; Deschamps, F.; Roussel, S..
The medium-term effects of permanent or random exposure to stray voltage applied to the water trough were evaluated on milk production and stress physiology in lactating dairy cows. Seventy-four Holstein cows were assigned during two 8-wk experimental periods to 1 of 3 treatments. The treatments were permanent exposure to voltage (PERM, 1.8 V, n = 23) applied to the water trough, random exposure to voltage (RAND, 1.8 V, 36 h/wk, n = 25), and no exposure to voltage (control, n = 26). On the first day of voltage exposure, PERMcows had higher activity levels than control cows (9.8 ± 2.70 vs. −2.3 ± 2.74 14-s periods of movement/h). During the eighth week of exposure, RAND cows had higher activity levels than control cows (4.2 ± 3.64 vs. −7.7 ± 3.54 14-s...

Postcalving factors affecting conception risk in Holstein dairy cows in tropical and sub-tropical conditions Inra
Tillard, E.; Humblot, P.; Faye, B.; Lecomte, P.; Dohoo, I.; Bocquier, F..
The objective was to identify postpartum risk factors between nutritional imbalance and health disorders affecting first-service conception risk (FSCR) in 21 commercial Holstein herds in Reunion Island. Multivariate logistic-regression models including herd as a random effect were used to analyze the relationship between FSCR and energy status, nitrogen status, hepatic function, mineral deficiencies, and postpartum health disorders. Two models (A and B) were built on two subsets of data (n = 446 and n = 863) with risk indicators measured during the first month of lactation and around time of first service, respectively, adjusted for season, breed, parity, origin, milk yield, calving to first service interval (CS1), and type of estrus (spontaneous vs....

Prototyping organic mixed crop-dairy systems at a local scale: a multi-attribute approach Inra
Coquil, X.; Fiorelli, J.L.; Bazard, C.; Foissy, D.; Trommenschlager, J.M.; Blouet, A..
Social demand for Sustainable agriculture and multifunctionality of agriculture since the 2003 CAP reform, leads agricultural systems to be more friendly for the environment. In such a context, research has to work on the conception of environmental friendly agricultural systems. In East of France, a research team is prototyping two complementary mixed crop-dairy systems aiming to respect the environment and to produce milk and crops. Two organic multi-objective prototypes are being built based on (i) respect of land natural properties (ii) use of low external inputs and (iii) limitation of the exchanges between systems at a local scale. Prototyping that kind of systems requires a multi-attribute approach using different methods. Experimentation at farming...
