Agglomeration externalities and technical efficiency in French pig production Inra

L’objectif est d’évaluer les effets de l’agglomération spatiale sur l’efficacité technique des exploitations porcines françaises. Nous utilisons une approche en deux étapes. Dans la première étape, nous calculons les scores d’efficacité de l’activité porcine avec la méthode non-paramétrique “Data Envelopment Analysis” (DEA; Analyse d’Enveloppement des Données). La deuxième étape consiste en une régression de ces scores sur des variables d’agglomération. Les données utilisées sont celles de 936 producteurs porcins en 2004. Application of a double bootstrap to investigation of determinants of technical efficiency of farms in Central Europe Inra

The paper provides one of the first applications of the double bootstrap procedure (Simar and Wilson 2007) in a two-stage estimation of the effect of environmental variables on non-parametric estimates of technical efficiency. This procedure enables consistent inference within models explaining efficiency scores, while simultaneously producing standard errors and confidence intervals for these efficiency scores. The application is to 88 livestock and 256 crop farms in the Czech Republic, split into individual and corporate.

Assessing managerial performance using non-parametric distance functions compared to technical and accounting ratio analysis: an application to French farms in Nord-Pas-de-Calais specialized in field crops Inra

This paper highlights the operational possibilities of applying non-parametric distance functions to diagnose farm performance. An empirical application on 178 farms in the Pas de Calais region specialized in field crops and observed over the period 1994-2001 establishes the coherence of this method compared to the usual approaches based on technical and accounting ratios. In addition, our results highlight the relevance of the additional information which is being generated by dissociating the technical and scale components of total factor productivity levels.

Could small dairy farms in Switzerland compete with their French counterparts? A metafrontier analysis during 1990-2004 Inra

The objective of the paper is to investigate whether Swiss farms specialised in dairy (the prevailing production of the country), which are small in international standards, would have a survival potential if they had to compete more directly with EU farms. More specifically, we investigate whether Swiss dairy farms would be able to compete with their French counterparts (located in mountainous areas, but larger than Swiss ones) in a future made of increased globalisation and reduced borders. Farm size and efficiency: the case of Slovenia Inra

This paper investigates farm technical, scale, allocative and economic efficiency and its relationship with farm size in Slovenia over the period 1994-2003. Development of farm efficiency during the transition period, the evolution of farm size (small or large) and their contribution to the performance of the agricultural sector are crucial questions for the future of rural areas, in particular in Slovenia where predominantly family farms are of relatively small size. The results suggest that there is a positive relationship between farm efficiency and size in this country, and that labour is more crucial than any other production factor in the country’s rural areas.

Technical efficiency of Hungarian farms before and after accession Inra

In this study, both parametric (SFA) and non-parametric (DEA) efficiency approaches were used to analyse the technical efficiency (TE) of Hungarian farms before and after the accession. Slightly different results were obtained with SFA and DEA. After years of decreasing technical efficiency scores, accession seems to have halted the process and positively influence the evolution of average technical efficiency. A number of determinants of TE provide a plausible explanation of the evolution of efficiency.

This paper analyzes technical, scale, allocative and economic efficiency for Slovenian farms during the transition period 1994-2003, with a Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) sample. Such studies of various components of economic efficiency are rare in transitional agriculture, especially in Slovenia.
