Bacterioplankton features and its relations with doc characteristics and other limnological variables in Paraná river floodplain environments (PR/MS-Brazil) BJM
Teixeira,Mariana Carolina; Santana,Natália Fernanda; Azevedo,Júlio César Rodrigues de; Pagioro,Thomaz Aurélio.
Since the introduction of the Microbial Loop concept, many studies aimed to explain the role of bacterioplankton and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in aquatic ecosystems. Paraná River floodplain system is a very complex environment where these subjects were little explored. The aim of this work was to characterize bacterial community in terms of density, biomass and biovolume in some water bodies of this floodplain and to verify its temporal variation and its relation with some limnological variables, including some indicators of DOC quality, obtained through Ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) and fluorescence spectroscopic analysis. Bacterial density, biomass and biovolume are similar to those from other freshwater environments and both density and biomass were...

Biogeochemistry of the OMZ of Chile Gayana
Pantoja,Silvio.
Most microbial reactions are in one way or another associated to decomposition of organic matter, and occurs under two general conditions: in the presence and in the absence of oxygen. Here, we will examine current information on the biogeochemical reactions in the area of the oxygen minimum zone off Chile. The aim of this presentation is to examine mechanisms of processing of organic matter under upwelling and O2 depletion.

Regulation of the corticosteroid signalling system in rainbow trout HPI axis during confinement stress. ArchiMer
Kiilerich, Pia; Servili, Arianna; Peron, Sandrine; Valotaire, Claudiane; Goardon, Lionel; Leguen, Isabelle; Prunet, Patrick.
This study aims to shed light on corticosteroid regulation of stress in teleost fish with focus on the corticosteroid signalling system. The role of the mineralocorticoid-like hormone 11-deoxycorticosterone (DOC) in fish is still enigmatic, as is the function of the mineralocorticoid receptor, MR. Low plasma DOC levels and ubiquitous tissue distribution of MR question the physiological relevance of the mineralocorticoid-axis. Furthermore, the particular purpose of each of the three corticosteroid receptors in fish, the glucocorticoid receptors, GR1 and GR2, and the MR, is still largely unknown. Therefore we investigate the regulation of cortisol and DOC in plasma and mRNA levels of MR, GR1 and GR2 in the HPI-axis tissue (hypothalamus, pituitary and...

Resilience of soil microbial activity and of amino acid dynamics to the removal of plant carbon inputs during winter Scientia Agricola
Avramides,Elizabeth J.; Christou,Matina; Jones,David L..
Many temperate agricultural soils have prolonged periods in the winter when plant carbon inputs to the soil are low. Soil maintained at low temperature in the absence of plants was used to simulate the conditions in a vineyard soil during winter. In a four month simulated overwintering period we showed that the concentration of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen in soil solution slowly declined alongside heterotrophic soil respiration. Measurements of free amino acid concentrations and turnover indicated that the amino acid pool in soil was rapidly depleted but readily replenished throughout the four-month period. This indicates that the soil contained intrinsic reserves of labile C that was capable of supporting the soil microbial community in times of...
