The effect of thermal mass on the salinity estimate from conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) tags sensor mounted on marine mammals is documented, and a correction scheme is proposed to mitigate its impact. The algorithm developed here allows for a direct correction of the salinity data, rather than a correction of the sample's conductivity and temperature. The amplitude of the thermal mass-induced error on salinity and its correction are evaluated via comparison between data from CTD tags and from Sea-Bird Scientific CTD used as a reference. Thermal mass error on salinity appears to be generally O(10(-2)) g kg(-1), it may reach O(10(-1)) g kg(-1), and it tends to increase together with the magnitude of the cumulated temperature gradient (T-HP) within the... |

In the past few decades, hydrothermal vent research has progressed immensely, resulting in higher-quality samples and long-term studies. With time, scientists are becoming more aware of the impacts of sampling on the faunal communities and are looking for less invasive ways to investigate the vent ecosystems. In this perspective, imagery analysis plays a very important role. With this study, we test which factors can be quantitatively and accurately assessed based on imagery, through comparison with faunal sampling. Twelve instrumented chains were deployed on the Atlantic Eiffel Tower hydrothermal edifice and the corresponding study sites were subsequently sampled. Discrete, quantitative samples were compared to the imagery recorded during the experiment.... |

Most available CTD Satellite Relay Data Logger (CTD-SRDL) profiles are heavily compressed before satellite transmission. High-resolution profiles recorded at the sampling frequency of 0.5 Hz are, however, available upon physical retrieval of the logger. Between 2014 and 2018, several loggers deployed on elephant seals in the Southern Ocean have been set in continuous recording mode, capturing both the ascent and descent for over 60 profiles per day during several months, opening new horizons for the physical oceanography community. Taking advantage of a new dataset made of seven such loggers, a postprocessing procedure is proposed and validated to improve the quality of all CTD-SRDL data: that is, both high-resolution profiles and compressed low-resolution... |

This investigation of the potential savings to the State of North Dakota because of reduced office space and labor costs and alternatively, the potential benefits to rural communities of increasing employment by adding some state agency jobs was stimulated by Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 4006, which directed the Legislative Council to study state agency office space needs to determine the feasibility and desirability of transferring state agencies or state employees to rural areas. The objective of this analysis was two-fold; (1) determine the cost difference of operating offices in Bismarck versus rural communities and (2) determine the local/regional economic impacts of the potential jobs. The results indicated that development of satellite data... |

In order to assist with this task, the Management Committee had further requested IODE to carry out an assessment of data and data product requirements of existing oceanography and marine meteorology programmes/projects, and evaluate whether these were currently met by the various groups of data centers (1). It had been recommended also to use the experience gathered in the preparation of the GOOS Data Management Plan (1998-199) and possibly the GCOS Data Management Plan as examples. |

In the late 1960s IODE started the system of the National Oceanographic Programmes (NOPs) and Cruise Summary Reports (CSRs, formerly ROSCOPs) as a way to share information on planned research cruises as well as to report on the results of research cruises. For many years the NOP information was managed by the IODE Secretariat. However, at IODE-XV (1995) an offer was made by the University of Delaware to take on this task as part of OCEANIC (www.cms.udel.edu). The IODE Committee accepted this kind offer and Oceanic managed the service for well over ten years. At IODE-XVI, IODE decided to cease the mailing of paper copies of NOPs by the Secretariat, requested NODCs to mail NOPs directly to OCEANIC, and recommended that NOP information be made available... |
