A Correction for the Thermal Mass-Induced Errors of CTD Tags Mounted on Marine Mammals ArchiMer
Mensah, Vigan; Roquet, Fabien; Siegelman-charbit, Lia; Picard, Baptiste; Pauthenet, Etienne; Guinet, Christophe.
The effect of thermal mass on the salinity estimate from conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) tags sensor mounted on marine mammals is documented, and a correction scheme is proposed to mitigate its impact. The algorithm developed here allows for a direct correction of the salinity data, rather than a correction of the sample's conductivity and temperature. The amplitude of the thermal mass-induced error on salinity and its correction are evaluated via comparison between data from CTD tags and from Sea-Bird Scientific CTD used as a reference. Thermal mass error on salinity appears to be generally O(10(-2)) g kg(-1), it may reach O(10(-1)) g kg(-1), and it tends to increase together with the magnitude of the cumulated temperature gradient (T-HP) within the...

Biological data extraction from imagery - How far can we go? A case study from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge ArchiMer
Cuvelier, Daphne; De Busserolles, Fanny; Lavaud, Romain; Floc'H, Estelle; Fabri, Marie-claire; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Sarrazin, Jozee.
In the past few decades, hydrothermal vent research has progressed immensely, resulting in higher-quality samples and long-term studies. With time, scientists are becoming more aware of the impacts of sampling on the faunal communities and are looking for less invasive ways to investigate the vent ecosystems. In this perspective, imagery analysis plays a very important role. With this study, we test which factors can be quantitatively and accurately assessed based on imagery, through comparison with faunal sampling. Twelve instrumented chains were deployed on the Atlantic Eiffel Tower hydrothermal edifice and the corresponding study sites were subsequently sampled. Discrete, quantitative samples were compared to the imagery recorded during the experiment....

Correction and Accuracy of High- and Low-Resolution CTD Data from Animal-Borne Instruments ArchiMer
Siegelman, Lia; Roquet, Fabien; Mensah, Vigan; Riviere, Pascal; Pauthenet, Etienne; Picard, Baptiste; Guinet, Christophe.
Most available CTD Satellite Relay Data Logger (CTD-SRDL) profiles are heavily compressed before satellite transmission. High-resolution profiles recorded at the sampling frequency of 0.5 Hz are, however, available upon physical retrieval of the logger. Between 2014 and 2018, several loggers deployed on elephant seals in the Southern Ocean have been set in continuous recording mode, capturing both the ascent and descent for over 60 profiles per day during several months, opening new horizons for the physical oceanography community. Taking advantage of a new dataset made of seven such loggers, a postprocessing procedure is proposed and validated to improve the quality of all CTD-SRDL data: that is, both high-resolution profiles and compressed low-resolution...

ECONOMIC IMPACT OF OUT-SOURCING FROM STATE AGENCIES IN BISMARCK TO RURAL NORTH DAKOTA AgEcon
Sell, Randall S.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
This investigation of the potential savings to the State of North Dakota because of reduced office space and labor costs and alternatively, the potential benefits to rural communities of increasing employment by adding some state agency jobs was stimulated by Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 4006, which directed the Legislative Council to study state agency office space needs to determine the feasibility and desirability of transferring state agencies or state employees to rural areas. The objective of this analysis was two-fold; (1) determine the cost difference of operating offices in Bismarck versus rural communities and (2) determine the local/regional economic impacts of the potential jobs. The results indicated that development of satellite data...

Guide for establishing a National Oceanographic Data Centre OceanDocs
This Document is the second revision of the IOC Manuals and Guides No.5. The first edition was published in 1975 and the first revision in 1997. This document deals mainly with oceanographic data management but, as data and information management are increasingly complementary, some attention is also given to marine information management. This Guide is intended as a tool for policy makers at the national level to assist them with the decision-making related to the establishment of national facilities for the management of oceanographic data (and information). It is also intended to be a reference document for national organizations involved in, or planning to be involved in, oceanographic data and information management.

Guide for establishing a National Oceanographic Data Centre OceanDocs
This guide has been prepared to assist Member States of Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) in establishing and operating a national oceanographic data centre (NODC). Since the early 1960s, approximately 55 Member States of IOC have established oceanographic data centres or designated a national agency as responsible for international oceanographic data and information exchange. These data centres and designated national agencies (DNAs) support both national and international clients with oceanographic data and information services.

IODE data flow (National Oceanographic Programmes (NOPs) and Cruise Summary Reports (CSRs)) OceanDocs
Rickards, Lesley.
In the late 1960s IODE started the system of the National Oceanographic Programmes (NOPs) and Cruise Summary Reports (CSRs, formerly ROSCOPs) as a way to share information on planned research cruises as well as to report on the results of research cruises. For many years the NOP information was managed by the IODE Secretariat. However, at IODE-XV (1995) an offer was made by the University of Delaware to take on this task as part of OCEANIC (www.cms.udel.edu). The IODE Committee accepted this kind offer and Oceanic managed the service for well over ten years. At IODE-XVI, IODE decided to cease the mailing of paper copies of NOPs by the Secretariat, requested NODCs to mail NOPs directly to OCEANIC, and recommended that NOP information be made available...
