A ?carcineretid crab from Lower Turonian (Cretaceous) black shales of Misburg, Hannover area (Germany) Naturalis
Neumann, Christian; Jagt, John W.M..
Although poorly preserved and missing most, if not all, carapace features that would allow for a proper assignment at the generic level, we think a crab (Fig. 1) contained in the collections of the late Professor Gundolf Ernst warrants a short description, if only in view of its preservational style.

A new classification of the Xanthoidea sensu lato (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura) based on phylogenetic analysis and traditional systematics and evaluation of all fossil Xanthoidea sensu lato Naturalis
Karasawa, H.; Schweitzer, C.E..
A phylogenetic analysis was conducted including representatives from all recognized extant and extinct families of the Xanthoidea sensu lato, resulting in one new family, Hypothalassiidae. Four xanthoid families are elevated to superfamily status, resulting in Carpilioidea, Pilumnoidoidea, Eriphioidea, Progeryonoidea, and Goneplacoidea, and numerous subfamilies are elevated to family status. The Mathildellidae is moved from the Goneplacidae to the Portunoidea. Diagnoses for all superfamilies and families discussed herein are provided, embracing characters typically used by biologists as well as readily fossilized features of the dorsal carapace, sternum, abdomen, and chelipeds. All genera known from the fossil record at one time referred to the Xanthidae...

A relationship between antimicrobial peptide gene expression and capacity of a selected shrimp line to survive a Vibrio infection ArchiMer
De Lorgeril, Julien; Gueguen, Yannick; Goarant, Cyrille; Goyard, Emmanuel; Mugnier, Chantal; Fievet, Julie; Piquemal, D; Bachere, Evelyne.
Understanding of antimicrobial defence mechanisms of penaeid shrimp should help in the design of efficient strategies for the management and disease control in aquaculture. In this study, we have specifically analysed the expression in circulating hemocytes of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) encoding genes, such as PEN2 and PEN3, ALF, crustin, lysozyme and a putative cysteine-rich peptide. We evidenced a relationship between the level of expression of some AMPs and the successful response of the shrimp, Litopenaeus stylirostris, to circumvent a pathogenic Vibrio penaeicida infection. Additionally, significant differences in some AMP transcript amounts are evidenced between control, non-selected shrimp line and the third generation breeding of shrimp selected...

A revision of Myra Leach, 1817 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Leucosioidea) Naturalis
Galil, B.S..
A study of major collections led to a revision of the Indo-Pacific leucosioid genus Myra Leach, 1817. The systematic status and nomenclatural disposition of each species was assessed, and many were diagnosed based on examination of the type material. A new genus, Myrine, is established for M. acutidens (Ihle, 1918) and M. kesslerii (Paulson, 1875). The genus Myrodes Bell, 1855, is synonymized with Myra. Nine species are retained as valid: M. affinis Bell, 1855, M. australis Haswell, 1880, M. brevimana Alcock, 1896, M. elegans Bell, 1855, M. eudactyla (Bell, 1855), M. fugax (Fabricius, 1798), M. grandis Zarenkov, 1990, M. mammillaris Bell, 1855, and M. subgranulata Kossmann, 1877. Five new species are established: M. celeris, M. currax, M. curtimana, M....

A revision of the genus Matuta Weber, 1795 (Crustacea: Brachyura: Calappidae) Naturalis
Galil, B.S.; Clark, P.F..
Introduction Amid the gaudily-coloured parade of tropical crabs few are more splendidly patterned than the matutine genera. But the patterns decorating these species brought about taxonomic disarray and from the very beginning they baffled their researchers. Already in 1817 Leach remarked: "the characters which distinguish the species are very obscure". MacLeay (1838) wrote in exasperation: "there are many species confounded together under the name Matuta victor, I do not consider the above names of the family and genus to possess any authority". Stebbing (1905) concurred: "From the interminable discussion of minute differences, as to the importance of which distinguished authors neither agree one with another nor always with themselves, it seems safe to...

Anatomy and physiology of digestive tract of crustaceans decapods reared in aquaculture ArchiMer
Ceccaldi, H.
The digestive tract of crustacea is complex. It is composed of a shor t oesophagum, a stomach with two bags, and internal wall with appendags specialized in grinding of feeds. These hard mastication pieces represent the gastric mill. Setae, filters included in the stomach structure allow the separation between food particles and liquid compounds. Those one are coming over through filters and more on to the digestive gland tubules or mid gut gland. In this organ, several types of cells play specialized functions: absorption, enzyme secretion, stocking function. Some cells of a new type, with undefined function, may be neurosecretions function, have been described recently. The end of tubules of digestive gland exhibits cells with embryonic characteristics....

Approche ecophysiologigue et ultrastructurale de l'osmoregulation chez les crustaces decapodes ArchiMer
Pequeux, A; Lignon, J.
This paper deals mostly with recent physiological data on ion transport across the gill tissue and an attempt is made to correlate them with blood osmoregulation and ecological distribution in euryhaline decapods. A particular attention is paid to the gills of the fully euryhaline Chinese crab Eriocheir sinensis . Supporting this ecophysiological approach, there is an important ultrastructural analysis of the gill epithelium under various salinity conditions. The possible part played by the cuticle in ions movements is also considered.

Silva,Rejane da; Oshiro,Lídia Miyako Yoshii.
The objective of this work is to get knowledge about the "guaiamum" crabs reproduction. Two hundred and twenty four crabs were caught from August'96 to July'97. Their sex carapace color and morphometric data were obtained. The stages of gonadal development were macroscopically determined and the eggs diameter was measured. Three colors patters for the carapace for males, and four patters for females. Five stages of gonadal development were observed in female crabs, and two stages were observed for males. The first sexual maturity was estimated 53,0 mm carapace width for the females and 52,0 mm for the males. The ovigerous females occurred from March to May. The individual fecundity varied from 103.300 to 366.400 eggs. The eggs mean diameter was 0,39 mm.

Assessment from space of mangroves evolution in the Mekong Delta, in relation to extensive shrimp farming ArchiMer
Tong, P. H. S; Auda, Y; Populus, Jacques; Aizpuru, M; Al Habshi, A. Al; Blasco, F.
This study is an attempt to produce an assessment of the impact of shrimp aquaculture in the Mekong Delta (Viet Nam) on mangrove ecosystems. For this exercise we selected two sub-areas (Ca Mau and Tra Vinh provinces) encompassing a variety of land uses and ecological conditions. Twenty stations in Tra Vinh and 15 stations in Ca Mau have been surveyed several times from September 2000 to March 2002. Field investigations included mangrove soils studies, measurements of pH and salinity of the water, analysis of mangrove flora, and density and structure of the vegetation. Four Systeme Probatoire de l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) scenes were used for the discrimination of mangrove types and for the delineation of landscape units. For the first time, five...
