The role played by human activity in coastline changes indicates a general tendency of retreating coasts, especially deltaic environments, as a result of the recent trend of sea level rise as well as the blockage of the transfer of sediments towards the coast, especially due to the construction of dams. This is particularly important in deltaic environments which have been suffering a dramatic loss of area in the last decades. In contrast, in this paper, we report the origin and evolution of an anthropogenic delta, the Valo Grande delta, on the south-eastern Brazilian coast, whose origin is related to the opening of an artificial channel and the diversion of the main flow of the Ribeira de Iguape River. The methodology included the analysis of coastline... |

Maritime salt-marshes of the Eyre's delta located in Arcachon Bay (South-West Atlantic coast of France) were studied following to a recent work of Soriano-Sierra (1992). In the se tidal areas salt marshes develop at the top of mud-flats covered by Zostera noltii beds, and in the vicinity of fish ponds who are lagoonal impoundments of the 18th century. Along the Eyre's estuary where salinity is reduced by seepage of fresh water from the land, Spartina maritima and other halophilic plants tend to be replaced by a taU marsh of Phragmites communis, Scirpus maritimus and Juncus gerardii. The number of species or species richness is varying: S = 21 in the area l ("La Boucle") S = 26 ("Malprat") and S = 24 ("Comprian"). Rare species are present like Spartina... |

The neural crest is induced at the border between the neural plate and the epidermis. A complex set of signals is required for the specification of the crest cells between the epidermis and the neural plate. Here we discuss evidence supporting a model for neural crest induction in which different signals contribute in a sequential order. First, a gradient of bone morphogenic proteins (BMPs) is established in the ectoderm that results in segreggation into neural plate, neural folds and epidermis at increasing levels of BMP activity. Thus, the neural folds are induced at a precise threshold concentration of BMP, but this neural fold has an anterior character. In a second step, these anterior neural folds are transformed into prospective neural crest by... |

ABSTRACT A sexually mature albino specimen of the Gillbacker Sea Catfish species Sciades parkeri (Siluriformes, Ariidae), a vulnerable species, was captured in northern Amazon estuary, State of Pará, Brazil. Herein we present the first record of albinism phenomenon for this species, including the morphometric description of the albino, and a non-abnormal coloring specimen. |

The modern Rhone delta in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) is a typical wave-dominated delta that developed after the stabilization of relative sea level following the last deglacial sea-level rise. Similar to most other deltas worldwide, it displays several stacked parasequences and lobes that reflect the complex interaction between accommodation, sediment supply and autogenic processes on the architecture of a wave-dominated delta. The interpretation of a large set of newly acquired very high-resolution seismic and sedimentological data, well constrained by 14C dates, provides a refined three-dimensional image of the detailed architecture (seismic bounding surfaces, sedimentary facies) of the Rhone subaqueous delta, and allows us to propose a... |

A unique late Glacial-Preboreal record of changes in sea-level and sediment fluxes originating from the Alps is recorded in the Rhone subaqueous delta in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The compilation of detailed bathymetric charts, together with high-resolution seismic profiles and long cores, reveals the detailed architecture of several sediment lobes, related to periods of decreased sea-level rise and/or increased sediment flux. They are situated along the retreat path of the Rhone distributaries, from the shelf edge and canyon heads up to the modem coastline. They form transgressive backstepping parasequences across the shelf, the late Holocene (highstand) deltas being confined to the inner shelf The most prominent feature is an elongated... |

After World War II, twenty-nine coastal Salinas (122 km2), located in the vicinity of coastal lagoons and in deltas, were exploited along the Mediterranean coastlines in South France. Today, only five of these are still actively producing salt, currently representing 175 km2. Concomitant with the abandonment of many of the smaller Salinas, the larger Salinas in the Rhône delta (Camargue) strongly increased their surfaces at the expense of natural ecosystems, of which a part has also been abandoned after 2009. This paper documents these changes in landscape use by chronological GIS mapping and describes the fate of the 91 km2 of abandoned Salina surfaces. The majority of this area (88 km2) is included in the Natura 2000 network, among which most (74 km2)... |

High-resolution reflection seismic profiles with core analyses of sedimentary sequence near the Sea of Marmara (SoM) entrance to the Strait of İstanbul (SoI, Bosphorus) provide detailed record of sealevel changes since the Late Glacial Maximum (LGM). The sequence is deposited over the LGM erosional surface at a maximum depth of -105 m. It includes seven seismic units that can be confidently correlated with 14C-dated sedimentary units in the cores. Unit 6 represents levee deposits of the paleo-SoI channel that was deposited by a Black Sea outflow during 11.2-10.6 kyr BP. The reflection surfaces at base of Unit 5 and 4 correspond to wave-cut terraces at -71and -63 m, respectively, and are estimated to be 10.6 and 9.8 kyr BP. The seismic Unit 2, overlaying a... |
