Platycheirus aurolateralis, a second sibling of P. scutatus, new for the Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) Recently, two new species were described in the Platycheirus scutatus (Meigen, 1822) complex: P. aurolateralis Stubbs, 2002 and P. speighti Doczkal, Stuke & Goeldlin de Tiefenau, 2002. Re-examination of the material of P. splendidus revealed that P. aurolateralis also occurs in the Netherlands. The Dutch records of both P. aurolateralis and P. splendidus are summarised in a table and a distribution map. A key is provided for the males of all four species of the Platycheirus scutatus complex. The differences between the males are also summarised in a table. The two specimens of P. splendidus recorded from France and Belgium (Smit 2001) are... |

Platycheirus splendidus new for the Netherlands, Belgium and France (Diptera: Syrphidae) Platycheirus splendidus has only recently been described as a cryptic species closely related to P. scutatus. Re-examination of the material of P. scutatus in some of the Dutch collections revealed that P. splendidus also occurs in the Netherlands, Belgium and France. From Belgium one male was found (Bastogne, 23.V.1999, leg and col. J.T. Smit) and one male from France (Dept. Hautes Alpes, Pré de Mme Carle, Gironde, 1850 m, 11.VI.1992, leg. J. & W. van Steenis, col. W. van Steenis). The Dutch records of P. splendidus are summarized in a distribution map. The difference between the males of both species are given in a table. Females were studied briefly, but they... |

Key to the Dutch centipedes (Myriapoda: Chilopoda) With this key it is possible to identify the Dutch species of centipedes. In the introductory paragraphs the terminology of the body is explained. Subsequently, the body segments with pore fields and carpophage structure, the head with ocelli and coxosternum with prosternal teeth, the legs with setae code, and male and female gonopods are described. The key is based on the work of Brölemann (1930), Eason (1964, 1966, 1980, 1982), Keay (1995), and Koren (1986, 1992). All discriminating characters are checked with Dutch specimens and adapted to the Dutch situation, if necessary. The drawings are based on Dutch material. Additional to the key, a table with setae location on leg 14 and 15 of... |

A key to the Dutch spider wasps (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae) A key to the 65 species of spider wasps from the Netherlands, plus some additional species, is presented. It is the first key to the Dutch species since Wilcke (1943). The key is preceded by some remarks on morphology, techniques and a check list to the Dutch species. Arachnospila ausa has been removed from the list. The presence on the list was based on two voucher specimens in the Maastricht museum (nhm), one female which could not be traced and a male, which proved to be A. spissa. All Dutch species have received a Dutch common name. Brief information on body length, phenology and habitat and frequency is given. The recent book ‘De wespen en mieren van Nederland’ (Peeters et al. 2004) is... |

The syrphid genus Callicera in the Netherlands and Belgium (Diptera: Syrphidae) In Europe six species of Callicera are known. Until recently C. aenea, rufa and fagesii were known from both the Netherlands and Belgium. The authors have studied all available material and have gathered field data. In this paper C. aurata is presented for the first time from the Netherlands. Nine females and one male were observed in south of the province of Limburg. All Belgian specimens of C. aenea proved to be C. aurata (pers. com. L. Verlinden). This means that C. aurata has to be added to the Belgian list and C. aenea has to be eliminated. |

The genus Sphegina Meigen, 1822 in the Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) A survey of the genus Sphegina in the Netherlands is given. Some nomenclatural changes are indicated, which resulted in the following five species which are now known from the Netherlands: Sphegina clavata (Scopoli, 1763), Sphegina clunipes (Fallén, 1817), Sphegina elegans (Schummel, 1843), Sphegina sibirica Stackelberg, 1953 and Sphegina verecunda Collin, 1937. Some of the rarer species were confused with other species in the past or overlooked in the field. Several collections were re-examined and new records were gathered. This resulted in new distribution maps for the Dutch species and a description of the habitats. |

Dasysyrphus lenensis in the Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) Dasysyrphus lenensis Bagatshanova has been described from Eastern Siberia in 1980, but would remain overlooked in Europe until 1996. After the species had been reported from Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, examination of Dutch collections revealed its presence in the Netherlands. The specimens have been collected in de Veluwe (the central part of the country) and Zuid-Limburg (the southernmost part of the country). Compared with the closely related species D. pauxillus and D. pinastri it seems to be very rare: the total number of known Dutch specimens is seven. A key is given for the identification of species from the D. pinastri-group. |

Review of the genus Psilota in the Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) A review of the genus Psilota in the Netherlands is presented. It is demonstrated that the genus is represented by a complex of two species, Psilota anthracina Meigen, 1822 and P. atra (Fallén, 1817), as already indicated by Kassebeer. Both species can be separated using the key provided below. The interpretation of the species is exactly opposite to that in recent literature. Unfortunately, the holotype of P. atra Fallén was lost during transport. Therefore, we designate a neotype, again a male from Sweden (fig. 6). Our interpretation of the species is based on this neotype and the description and pictures of P. anthracina by Meigen. The habitats of both species in the Netherlands... |

Five new species of the hoverfly genus Cheilosia for the Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) Five species of the hoverfly genus Cheilosia are reported here for the first time for the fauna of the Netherlands. Keys are provided for the identification of the northwestern European species of the canicularis and proxima complexes. Cheilosia aerea Dufour, 1848 was only found in Zuid-Limburg, the most southeastern part of the Netherlands. Except for one specimen from 1943, all 14 specimens were collected in the 1990s. Cheilosia himantopus (Panzer, 1798) occurs in Zuid-Limburg and around Winterswijk in the east of the Netherlands. The species has the same distribution as C. canicularis (Panzer, 1801), with which it had been confused for a long time. Cheilosia... |
