Atividades de vôo de Plebeia saiqui (Holmberg) (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Meliponini) durante o período de postura da rainha e em diapausa 104
Pick,Raquel A.; Blochtein,Betina.
The activities of four colonies of Plebeia saiqui (Holmberg, 1903), of São Francisco de Paula, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, were studied from October, 1998 to September. 1999, comparatively during the oviposition period and the diapause. The construction of the cells was monitored by direct observation of the nests. The duration of the diapause period varied from 76 to 168 days. Monthly, the bees that left and entered were counted for 10 minutes, at each hour, during the complete period of flight activity. Influence of meteorological factors on the activities of bees flight was analyzed through simple and multiple regressions. During the oviposition period was found that solar irradiation, temperature and relative humidity had a significant influence on bees...

Diapause and different seasonal morphs of Euschistus heros (Fabr.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in Northern Paraná State 44
Mourão,Ana P. M.; Panizzi,Antônio R..
The Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (Fabr.), was collected on sunflower [Helianthus annuus (L.)], soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill], star bristle [Acanthospermum hispidum (DC.)], and under fallen leaves of mango tree [Mangifera indica (L.)] and privet (Ligustrum lucidum Ait.), during one year, to evaluate the diapause incidence and the occurrence of different seasonal morphs. The majority of the insects (ca. 90%) with mature reproductive organs was observed during the summer (December-March), when E. heros was found on soybean or on sunflower; in the beginning of autumn, most insects (87%) showed immature reproductive organs, and they were found on star bristle and under fallen leaves. Bugs with mature reproductive organs had more developed...

Effects of continuous drought and immersion on hatchability of Ochlerotatus albifasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) eggs stored at low temperature 99
Campos,Raúl E; Sy,Victoria E.; Castro,Luis.
The role of environmental factors on the hatching response of O. albifasciatus (Macquart) eggs is studied by simulating winter conditions in the laboratory. The hypothesis tested was that hatching response is affected by: (1) time that eggs remain at low temperature, (2) storage conditions, and (3) acclimatization time. Eggs were stored at 5ºC in drought and immersion conditions during 7, 21, 35, 90 and 146 days, immediately after, they were acclimatized at 22ºC during 24, 72, and 168 hours, and then eggs were flooded to induce hatching. Percent of hatched eggs was analyzed with a Generalized Lineal Model with a binomial distribution. Results show that: (1) a long storage period at cold temperature and long acclimatization periods improve the hatching...

Embryonic external morphogenesis of Rhammatocerus conspersus (Bruner) (Orthoptera: Acrididae: Gomphocerinae) and determination of the diapausing embryonic stage 44
Niva,Cintia C.; Becker,Miriam.
The grasshopper Rhammatocerus conspersus (Bruner) (Orthoptera: Acrididae: Gomphocerinae) is an occasional pest in pasturelands of Rio Grande do Sul State. It is a univoltine species with an embryonic diapause. Nymphal and adult stages occur during the warmer months (November-March). Eggs were dissected periodically for characterization of embryonic external morphogenesis in 1994 and 1995. Ten embryonic stages were illustrated. Two diapausing stages were verified in R. conspersus: one at 25% and another at 50% of total embryonic development.

High temperatures and absence of light affect the hatching of resting eggs of Daphnia in the tropics 42
Paes,Thécia A.S.V.; Rietzler,Arnola C.; Pujoni,Diego G.F.; Maia-Barbosa,Paulina M..
Temperature and light are acknowledged as important factors for hatching of resting eggs. The knowledge of how they affect hatching rates of this type of egg is important for the comprehension of the consequences of warming waters in recolonization of aquatic ecosystems dependent on dormant populations. This study aimed at comparing the influence of different temperature and light conditions on hatching rates of Daphnia ambigua andDaphnia laevis resting eggs from tropical environments. The ephippia were collected in the sediment of three aquatic ecosystems, in southeastern Brazil. For each lake, the resting eggs were exposed to temperatures of 20, 24, 28 and 32 °C, under light (12 h photoperiod) and dark conditions. The results showed that the absence of...

International study on Artemia : 41. Influence of culture conditions and specific diapause deactivation methods on the hatchability of Artemia cysts produced in a standard culture system 27
Lavens, P.; Tackaert, W.; Sorgeloos, P..
Using cyst material produced in an indoor cyst production system from 4 Artemia strains belonging to the species A. franciscana (San Francisco Bay, California, USA; Macau, Brazil; Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA) and A. parthenogenetica (Lavalduc, France), different factors were studied that affect dormancy in brine shrimp cysts. Preliminary experiments under varying (a)biotic culture conditions revealed an interaction between environmental conditions and hatching characteristics. Results obtained under better-defined conditions demonstrated a significant positive correlation between the amount of food available to the adult Artemia populations and the hatchability of their encysted...

Life cycle of Agrotis malefida (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae): a diapausing cutworm 103
Specht,Alexandre; Angulo,Andrés O.; Olivares,Tania S.; Fronza,Edegar; Roque-Specht,Vânia F.; Valduga,Eduardo; Albrecht,Francine; Poletto,Graziela; Barros,Neiva M..
This study describes the life cycle of Agrotis malefida Guenée, 1852 (Noctuidae: Noctuinae) under laboratory conditions. The insects were reared in a controlled environment (25 ± 1ºC, 70 ± 10% RH and 14 hours photo phase) and observed daily. The larvae were fed Greene's artificial diet and adults were offered a 10% sucrose solution. The viability and duration of immature stages were assessed. The experiment initiated with 2,410 eggs. Larvae were isolated shortly after hatching. Longevity, pre-, post- and oviposition, fecundity and fertility of 13 adult couples were also evaluated. The viability of eggs, larvae, pupae and pre-pupae was 96.72, 91.25, 78.37 and 95.26%, respectively. The average duration of egg, larva, pre-pupa, pupa and adult was 7.93, 54.26,...

Photoperiodism and seasonality in neotropical population of Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae) 82
Campos,Wellington G..
Neotropical populations of the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella L. have seasonal cycles of growth and decrease, and moth migration plays a fundamental role in generating such population dynamics. Since the oscillation of these populations is predictable, photoperiod might operate as a signal that triggers the migratory behaviour of the insect. Migration in insects is usually preceded by reproductive diapause, a photoperiodic response that can be characterised by morphological, physiological and behavioural alterations that permit to discriminate between migratory and non-migratory forms. In this study, I tested whether the pre-imaginal and reproductive development of P. xylostella from Minas Gerais (Brazil) is affected by artificial day-lengths that...

The metabolic status of diapause embryos of Artemia franciscana (SFB) 27
Clegg, J.S.; Drinkwater, L.E.; Sorgeloos, P..
The brine shrimp Artemia franciscana is widely used in aquaculture and basic research in areas ranging from molecular biology to evolution and ecology. A key of its life history involves the production of encysted embryos whose development is halted (enters diapause) at the gastrula stage. These shelled embryos are released into the aqueous environment where diapause continues until terminated by suitable conditions that produce an "activated embryo", which then can resume development when conditions permit. Very little is known about the metabolism of diapause embryos, in contrast to activated embryos, which have been studied extensively. We have examined selected features of metabolism in diapause embryos produced in...
