Diatoms adapt to changing environmental conditions in very efficient ways. Among the mechanisms that can be activated, the reorientation of carbon metabolism is crucial because it allows the storage of energy into energy-dense molecules, typically lipids. Beside their roles in physiology, lipids are commercially interesting compounds. Therefore studies dealing with this topic are relevant for both basic and applied science. Diatom artificial medium (DAM) a new artificial medium for the diatom Haslea ostrearia and other marine microalgae ArchiMer

Artificial media are used in physiological studies of microalgae to maintain consistent conditions from one experiment to another and these media must be adapted to the needs of the organism studied. The artificial medium, in this case named diatom artificial medium (DAM), was designed to maintain long-term cultures of Haslea ostrearia and 19 other planktonic microalgae, and to allow physiological studies related to metal metabolism. The biomass and biochemical composition of H. ostrearia grown in the DAM and in a modified Provasoli medium were compared to assess the suitability of this new artificial medium for the culture of this diatom. Epiphytic Eunotia (Bacillariophyceae) on Podostemum from Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, including new observations on morphology and taxonomy of some rare recorded species Biota Neotropica

Eunotia is a highly diverse diatom genus in the Neotropics. Considerable morphological variability of the valve showed in several species of the genus resulted in a quite confused taxonomy. Twelve Eunotiataxa attached to Podostemum spp. were investigated using the light microscopy (LM). Additionally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in order to investigate the fine morphology of most abundant taxa. Samples were collected from four rivers from the State of Santa Catarina between March 2009 and July 2010. During the taxonomic analysis of strains from marine phytoplankton samples, it was found that a sample contained isolated or short chains of 2-4 small cells. Observations under the electron microscopes revealed the presence of Extubocellulus spinifer (Hargraves & Guillard) Hasle, Stosch & Syvertsen, a minute species until now not reported for the Southeastern Pacific Ocean. In this paper we describe the characteristics of the Chilean cells, comment on the variability of some of its morphological features, and discuss about the differences between the two known species of the genus.

Gomphonema Ehrenberg (Bacillariophyceae) in a lotic environment of the Upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil Biological Sciences

A taxonomic study of species of the genus Gomphonema Ehrenberg (Bacillariophyceae) was performed in alotic environment (Ipoitã Channel) of the Upper Paraná River Floodplain. Samplings were performed in June, September and December 2013 and February 2014. Two petioles of Eichhornia azurea (Sw) Kunth were sampled at three different sites in the channel. Twelve species and two taxonomic varieties were identified. All species identified were recorded at the sampling site 3, loca ated close to the Ivinhema River. The lowest number of taxa occurred at the sampling site 1 (9 specific and infra specific taxa), in the confluence with the Paraná River. The Bay of Bourgneuf, France, is a main site of shellfish production. In the marshes along the bay, oyster intensive rearing and fattening need the mass production of microalgae. Salt groundwaters, available in this region, support a large part of this production for aquaculture. Studies carried out by local authorities have brought to the fore the accumulation of lead (Pb) in several samples of algal pastes derived from cultures using salt groundwater. Marennine is a water-soluble blue-green pigment produced by the marine diatom Haslea ostrearia. The diatom and its pigment are well known from oyster farming areas as the source of the greening of oyster gills, a natural process increasing their market value in Western France. Blooms of blue Haslea are also present outside oyster ponds and hence marine organisms can be exposed, periodically and locally, to significant amounts of marennine in natural environments. La diatomee Navicula ostrearia Bory en baie de Bourgneuf ArchiMer

Previously, Navicula ostrearia B. has been described only from the Marennes-Oleron district of the Atlantic coast of France. However, this pennate diatom is also present In the Bay of Bourgneuf where breeding of green-gilled oysters were recognized in sea basins called oyster ponds. A short description of observations made with the optical microscope precedes description of high magnification examination of the frustule made with the scanning electron microscope. This combination of techniques shows a polymorphism between the external and internal surfaces of diatom valves.

Modélisation sur vingt ans (1976-1995) de la production phytoplanctonique en baie de Seine ArchiMer

This paper presents an ecological modelling of the Bay of Seine (Eastern Channel) over the last twenty years, chosen as a typical case of eutrophication in a river plume. In the physical sub-model, the Bay is divided into 42 boxes and water fluxes between them are calculated automatically using Ifremer's "Elise" software. A two-layer, vertical thermohaline model is then linked with the horizontal circulation scheme in order to take vertical stratification into account. The biological submodel deals with two chemical elements, nitrogen and silicon, and splits phytoplankton into diatoms and flagellates. Results from this ecological model point out the spatial concordance of highest phytoplanktonic concentrations with the river plume spreading in the bay....

This study commissioned by the Syndicat de l'Elorn et de la Rivière de Daoulas aimed at assessing on a mathemical modelling basis the impact of 3 scenarios of reduction of the loadings of Elorn river (imposed concentrations : 20, 15 et 10 mg/L NO3) on the status of ulva mass proliferation in the Moulin Blanc cowe (Bay of Brest). An ecological 3D model of N, P and Si cycling in the bay of Brest has been applied to a "reference situation": 2004 meteorological forcing combined to recent loadings of the new sewage plant. Species-specific differences in diatom-induced anomalies in calanoid copepod embryogenesis: are they linked to the stock-piled antioxidants? IBSS Repository

Egg production and viability of co-occurring in nature copepods, Calanus helgolandicus and Calanoides carinatus, fed diatom, Thalassiosira rotula, and then switched to dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum, were compared in experimental conditions. Egg production of both species on diatom diet was similar (up to 17-22 eggs.female-1.d-1) but no viable nauplii were observed. Development was arrested at different stages depending on degree of anomalies. Abnormal embryos displayed various degrees of deteriorations in pigment distribution and organization of extracellular matrix. Triceratium moreirae sp. nov. and Triceratium dubium (Triceratiaceae - Bacillariophyta) from estuarine environments of Southern Brazil, with comments on the genus Triceratium C. G. Ehrenberg BJB

A new species of Triceratiaceae is described for estuarine environments of Southern Brazil. The valve of Triceratium moreirae sp. nov. is triangular with elevations bearing ocellus and a rimoportula in their basis. The valvar surface has robust pseudoloculi, circular to polygonal, each one confining a group of areolae arranged in a typical pattern. A central larger areola is surrounded by 5-8 smaller areolae, and they are poroidal with domed cribra. A septum emerges from the valvocopula, having the base reinforced by ribs and the margins folded to the innerside of the valve. Концентрация токсина в клетках водоросли, культивируемой в питательных средах F/2 и Гольдберга, составляет в среднем соответственно 0.43 и 0.145 пг·кл.-1.
