Earlier studies have pointed out systematic differences between sea surface salinity retrieved from L-band radiometric measurements and measured in situ, which depend on sea surface temperature (SST). We investigate how to cope with these differences given existing physically based radiative transfer models. In order to study differences coming from seawater dielectric constant parametrization, we consider the model of Somaraju and Trumpf (2006) (ST) which is built on sound physical bases and close to a single relaxation term Debye equation. While ST model uses fewer empirically adjusted parameters than other dielectric constant models currently used in salinity retrievals, ST dielectric constants are found close to those obtained using the Meissner and... |

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of aflatoxin contamination on the dielectric constant of maize kernels. A factorial experiment comprising of three levels of moisture content (13.3, 15.3, and 16.4%), three frequencies (25, 50, and 100 kHz), and nine levels of aflatoxin contamination (0, 1.5, 2.6, 10, 50, 100, 150, 172, and 230 μg/kg) was used. The maize kernels were poured into a custom-built sample holder comprising a shielded parallel plate capacitor. An ISO-TECH LCR-821 meter was used to measure the capacitance, from which the dielectric constant was computed. The results indicated that moisture content and frequency significantly (p ≤ 0.05) affected the dielectric constant. The dielectric constant increased with increase in... |

The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) has potential to characterize soils both vertically and horizontally. The effectiveness of using GPR relies on the interpretation of soil targets in the radargrams. For identifying the targets in their correct depths, a velocity model of the terrain is required. However, a velocity model cannot be directly obtained from GPR models using a monostatic antenna. An alternative is the generation of a depth model by measuring the velocity of the electromagnetic pulse from hyperbolas created in the radargram from the interaction of the pulse with point scatterers. On the other hand, the radargram does not always present these point scatterers for the estimation of the pulse velocity and generation of an accurate depth model.... |
