Ascocotyle (Phagicola) rara sp. n. (Digenea, Heterophyidae) from Ixobrychus exilis (Aves, Ardeidae) in Brazil Zoologia
Arruda,Vanessa Santos de; Muniz-Pereira,Luís C.; Pinto,Roberto Magalhães.
Ascocotyle (Phagicola) rara sp. n. is described from the intestine of Ixobiyclius exilis (Gmelin, 1789), a Brazilian bittern. The new species is compared with Ascocotyle (Phagicola) angeloi Travassos, 1928 and Ascocotyle (Phagicola) moUieiiisicola (Sogandares-Bernal & Bridgman, 1960); the main distinguishing characters are related to the aspect of the gonotyl that is not perforated in A. (P.) rara sp. n. when compared to A. (P.) mollienisicola and the absence of the crown of spines at the anteriorend in the new species compared withA. (P.) angeloi. This is an important finding, since human infections by Phagicola spp. have been previously reported in Brazil.

Corrêa,Renata de Fátima da Silva Stravalli; Brasil-Sato,Marilia de Carvalho.
The specimens of surubim, Pseudoplatystoma corruscans (Spix and Agassiz, 1829), an important food fish with high commercial value in the Upper São Francisco River, were collected downstream from the Três Marias Dam, in the municipality of Três Marias, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Thirty-six individuals were examined and among the parasites, four species of Digenea were found: Witenbergia witenbergi Vaz, 1932 and Tylodelphys sp. (metacercarie), both with prevalence above 10%, followed by Acanthostomum gnerii (Szidat, 1958) and Acanthostomum sp.. The total length of the hosts did not influence the parasite prevalence. Witenbergia witenbergi occurred only in female hosts and the abundance of Tylodelphys sp. was higher in the males. These Digenea were...

Histological studies on the effects of Clinostomum marginatum (Digenea, Clinostomidae) in its second intermediate host Loricariichthys platymetopon (Osteichthyes, Loricariidae) of the upper Paraná River, Brazi Biological Sciences
Eiras, Jorge da Costa; UP; Dias, Maria Luiza Gaspar Goulart; UEM; Pavanelli, Gilberto Cezar; UEM; Machado, Marion Haruko; UEM.

Metacercariae of Austrodiplostomum compactum (Lutz, 1928) (Trematoda, Diplostomidae) infecting the eyes of Plagioscion squamosissimus (Heckel, 1840) (Perciformes, Scienidae) from Lake Catalão, Amazonas, Brazil Acta Amazonica
ALBUQUERQUE,Natália Brandão de; MOREY,Germán Augusto Murrieta; MORAIS,Aprigio Mota; MALTA,José Celso de Oliveira.
ABSTRACT Austrodiplostomum compactum is a digenetic trematode whith metacercariae that occur in the eyes of a wide variety of fish species. In Brazil, A. compactum metacercariae have been reported in many fish species, but there are only a few studies in the Amazon region. Due to the lack of information in the Amazon, the aim of this study was to report the occurrence of A. compactum metacercariae in the eyes of 15 specimens of Plagioscion squamosissimus from the Lake Catalão, in Amazonas, Brazil. Fishes were collected using gill nets placed randomly in the lake, euthanized in a field laboratory, and had their eyes dissected and examined under a stereomicroscope. A total of 801 metacercariae were registered infecting the eyes of the hosts with a parasitic...

Metazoan parasite communities of Leporinus macrocephalus (Characiformes: Anostomidae) in cultivation systems in the western Amazon, Brazil Acta Amazonica
MARTINS,Williane M. de O.; JUSTO,Marcia C. N.; CÁRDENAS,Melissa Q.; COHEN,Simone C..
ABSTRACT In the Amazon, the growing demand for fish has been boosting the expansion of fish farms. However, the intensification of cultivation can generate disequilibrium in the parasite-host environment, predisposing fish to parasitic infections. The objective of this study was to evaluate the community structure of metazoan parasites in cultivation systems of piauçu, Leporinus macrocephalus, in the state of Acre, Brazil. We examined 100 specimens from a semi-intensive cultivation system (earth tanks) and 100 from an extensive system (dams). Overall 66.5% of the hosts were parasitized. We collected 1,240 parasite specimens, classified in 15 metazoan taxa (10 monogenoidean, one digenean and four nematodes). The parasite prevalence was higher by...

Systematic and pathologic study of Paratanaisia bragai (Santos, 1934) Freitas, 1959 (Digenea, Eucotylidae) infestation in ruddy ground dove Columbina talpacoti (Temminck, 1811) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Pinto,R.M.; Menezes,R.C.; Tortelly,R..
This is the first report of the digenetic trematode Paratanaisia bragai infestation in a ruddy ground dove Columbina talpacoti, captured in a suburban area of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Although with a low prevalence (10%), the intensity of infection was high, considering that 116 worms were recovered from one of the kidneys. Gross lesions were not observed and histopathological analysis showed very dilated renal collecting ducts with destruction and flattening of the lining epithelial cells, without inflammatory reaction. The pathological findings were compared to those previously reported for P. bragai in other hosts, since the proposal of the species in 1934.
