For data-limited stocks (DLS), professional fishing data can be used as a potential source of information, especially in the absence of appropriate scientific survey, to understand abundance evolution under realistic hypothesis on resource catchability. This work focuses on a data-filtering approach, the selected fishing effort must reflect vessel activity that is least dependent on their technical characteristics and as stable as possible over time. There is a need to better understand the survivorship of discarded fishes, both for commercial stocks and species of conservation concern. Within European waters, the landing obligations that are currently being phased in as part of the European Union's reformed common fisheries policy means that an increasing number of fish stocks, with certain exceptions, should not be discarded unless it can be demonstrated that there is a high probability of survival. In the Northeast Atlantic fishery for roundnose grenadier Coryphaenoides rupestris, discards account for about 30% of the catch in weight. Data on discards are scarce; however, length distributions and discard rates appear to be relatively stable from year to year. In contrast, landings data available since 1990 show that the average pre-anal fin length has decreased from 20.7 cm in 1990 to 15.2 cm in 2008, resulting in a 58% reduction of the mean individual weight (850 g in 2008) and an increasing occurrence of overlapping class sizes between landings and discards in recent years. The landing obligation implemented under the Common Fisheries Policy promoted the development of fishing gear selective devices. The REDRESSE project conducted in the Bay of Biscay was the opportunity for trawl fleets targeting cephalopods, Nephrops and demersal fish to continue to test various selective configurations to reduce their discards levels. The sea trials were carried out onboard of commercial fishing vessels and the experimental tows were sampled by an observer. The hake, Merluccius hubbsi, fishery is the most important amongst the argentinean demersal fisheries. Fishery management schemes have been adopted to control high discard levels of undersized fish historically observed in the fishery. Controls have consissted in establishing closed areas to fishing and implementation of minimum mesh size in bottom trawls to allow escapement of fish less than 33 cm in length. Observers were set on board of fishing vessels from North Brittanny ports during one full year (1992-93). This study granted by EC Commission (contract CE/DGXIV-C-1 n° 1992/06) was a first approach for assessing French discards in the western English Channel. It identifies the main species discarded and produces a rough estimate of discard rates and size compositions in each métier targeting fish. The major reasons for variability were explained. To assess the likely economic outcomes to fishing fleets of the Landing Obligation (LO), bioeconomic models covering seven European fisheries, ranging from the North East Atlantic to the Mediterranean, have been applied to estimate the economic performance of fleets before and after implementing the LO. It is shown that for most of the analysed fisheries, their economic outcome will be negatively affected in the long term by the LO, when compared to the expected outcome with no LO. French deepwater fish exploitation (500 m) began off the West coast of the British Isles in 1973. It further developed in the 1980s, and intensified in the 1990s. In 1997, the French fleet comprised 49 boats, and since 1995 has landed yearly about 19,500 t of deepwater fish species, of which, the grenadier Coryphaenoides rupestris (Macrouridae) has been the most abundant. Discard data were sampled on-board by observers on French high sea trawlers from 1995 to 1997. Eight species were identified as totally landed, 43 non-commercial species as totally discarded and only one, the grenadier, as both landed and discarded. The "best" raising procedure for discards in fishery science is a method everyone talks about but nobody has ever seen it. The specific workshop on discards (Anon. 2003) proposes formulas that are too simplistic as they do not take into account the within trip variance. The literature is full of attempts and results but they are always specific to particular case studies (Stratoudakis et al, 2001, Cotter et al, 2001) or based on inconsistent hypothesis as demonstrated by Rochet and Trenkel (2005).
