A new gene controlling resistance to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis races 0 and 2 in melon National Institute of Agronomic Research
Oumouloud, A.; González Torres, R.; Arnedo Andrés, M.S.; Alvarez, J.M..
‘Tortuga’ is a cantalupensis accession of Spanish origin which has proven to be resistant to Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. melonis races 0 and 2. In this work we report the results of an allellism test to assess the inheritance of this resistance. Resistance in ‘Tortuga’ seems to be controlled by two genes, one of them is the already described Fom-1, and the other is either a dominant one linked to Fom-1, or an independent recessive factor. Further work will be needed to clarify the nature of this resistance.

A new view on aphid resistance in melon: the role of Aphis gossypii variability National Institute of Agronomic Research
Boissot, N.; Mistral, P.; Chareyron, V.; Dogimont, C..
Resistance to Aphis gossypii in Cucumis melo has been largely studied but A. gossypii variability has never been considered. Resistance to colonization by A. gossypii, clone NM1, and to non persistent virus transmission by this clone is conferred by a NBS-LRR gene called Vat, isolated in the PI 161375 accession. We investigated resistance to A. gossypii with four clones of A. gossypii that belong to two very distinct genotypes, NM1 and C9. The Vat gene conferred a high level of resistance to a NM1 clone and partial resistance to a C9 clone. Four additive QTL and two pairs of epistatic QTL were detected in a recombinant inbred line population derived from the cross ‘Védrantais’ x PI 161375. Half of them clearly have a specific effect on the acceptance by...

Aggressiveness between genetic groups I and II of isolates of Cercospora zeae-maydis Scientia Agricola
Mathioni,Sandra Marisa; Carvalho,; Brunelli,Kátia Regiane; Beló,André; Camargo,Luis Eduardo Aranha.
For many years, the gray leaf spot disease (GLS) caused by the fungus Cercospora zeae-maydis Tehon & Daniels, was not considered an important pathogen of maize (Zea mays, L.) in Brazil. However, the recent adoption of agronomical practices such as no-tillage and cultivation under central pivot irrigation systems increased the incidence and severity to the extent that GLS is now one of the most important diseases of maize. Isolates of C. zeae-maydis can be distinguished by two genetic groups (I and II) based on AFLP markers and on polymorphisms of the ITS and 5.8S rDNA regions. Until now, however, the biological implications of this distinction remain unclear. This study investigated whether isolates from the two genetic groups differ in...

An AFLP marker linked to the Pm-1 gene that confers resistance to Podosphaera xanthii race 1 in Cucumis melo Genet. Mol. Biol.
Teixeira,Ana Paula Matoso; Barreto,Fatima Aparecida da Silva; Camargo,Luis Eduardo Aranha.
Brazil produced 330,000 metric tons of melons in 2005, principally in the Northeast region where one of the most important melon pathogens is the powdery mildew fungus Podosphaera xanthii. The disease is controlled mainly by incorporating single dominant resistance genes into commercial hybrids. We report on linkage analysis of the Pm-1 resistance gene, introgressed from the AF125Pm-1 Cantalupensis Charentais-type breeding line into the yellow-fleshed melon (Group Inodorus) breeding line AF426-S by backcrossing to produce the resistant line AF426-R, and the amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) marker M75/H35_155 reported to be polymorphic between AF426-S and AF426-R. Segregation analysis of M75/H35_155 using a backcross population of 143 plants...

Association mapping in common bean revealed regions associated with Anthracnose and Angular Leaf Spot resistance Scientia Agricola
Fritsche-Neto,Roberto; Souza,Thiago Lívio Pessoa Oliveira de; Pereira,Helton Santos; Faria,Luís Cláudio de; Melo,Leonardo Cunha; Novaes,Evandro; Brum,Itaraju Junior Baracuhy; Jannink,Jean-Luc.
ABSTRACT: Despite important biotic stresses to common bean, Anthracnose (ANT) and Angular Leaf Spot (ALS) can cause losses of up to 80 % and occur in more than 60 countries around the world. Genetic resistance is the most sustainable strategy to manage these diseases. Thus, we aimed to (1) identify new SNP markers associated with ALS and ANT resistance loci in elite common bean lines, and (2) provide a functional characterization of the DNA sequences containing the identified SNP markers. We evaluated 60 inbred lines, under field conditions, which represent the elite germplasm developed by the Embrapa common bean breeding program across 22 years, in terms of severity of the ALS and ANT. The lines were genotyped with 5,398 SNPs. Then, a Mixed Linear Model...

Breeding and Domestication of Eastern Oyster ( Crassostrea virginica ) Lines for Culture in the Mid-Atlantic, Usa: Line Development and Mass Selection for Disease Resistance ArchiMer
Frank-lawale, Anu; Allen, Standish K.; Degremont, Lionel.
A selective breeding program for Crassostrea virginica was established in 1997 as part of an initiative in Virginia to address declining oyster harvests caused by the two oyster pathogens Haplosporidium nelsoni (MSX) and Perkinsus marinus (Dermo). Housed in the Aquaculture Genetics and Breeding Technology Center (ABC), the objective of the program was to develop and disseminate disease-resistant lines that would enable an oyster culture industry. Today, culture of disease-resistant cultivars accounts formore than 90%of oyster production in the state, where 28.1 million half-shell oysters and 2 billion eyed larvae were sold in 2012. Results of our line development program as of 2006 are reported. Eight ABC lines from 3 genetic groups—East Coast (EC),...

BRS Cometa: nova cultivar de feijoeiro comum com grão do tipo comercial carioca para a região do Distrito Federal. Infoteca-e
CARVALHO, W. P. de; ALBRECHT, J. C..
ABSTRACT: During the years 2003 and 2004, four experiments were conducted in the winter season, under irrigation and in the raining season in the experimental area of the Embrapa Cerrados Research Center at Planaltina, Federal District. The objective was to identify cultivars that presented the following characteristics: resistance to diseases, high yield, resistance to lodging, desirable plant height and good market acceptance, to be indicated for cultivation in the Federal District. It was concluded that the cultivar BRS Cometa is indicated for this region, due to its high yield characteristics, resistance to diseases and lodging, excellent cooking qualities and erect type.
