Altered mean platelet volume in patients with polymyositis and its association with disease severity BJMBR
Peng,Y.-F.; Huang,Y.-X.; Wei,Y.-S..
Polymyositis (PM) is an autoimmune disease characterized by chronic inflammation in skeletal muscle. Mean platelet volume (MPV), a marker in the assessment of systemic inflammation, is easily measured by automatic blood count equipment. However, to our knowledge, there are no data in the literature with respect to MPV levels in PM patients. Therefore, in this study we aimed to investigate MPV levels in patients with PM. This study included 92 newly diagnosed PM patients and 100 healthy individuals. MPV levels were found to be significantly lower compared with healthy controls (10.3±1.23 vs 11.5±0.74 fL, P<0.001). Interestingly, MPV was found to be positively correlated with manual muscle test (MMT) score and negatively correlated with erythrocyte...

Antibodies to citrullinated peptides are not associated with the rate of joint destruction in patients with a well-established diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis BJMBR
Nieto-Colonia,A.M.; Santos,W.S.; Keusseyan,S.P.; Caldana,W.; Fernandes,A.R.C.; Andrade,L.E.C..
Antibodies to citrullinated peptides are highly specific for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and represent a significant risk factor for undifferentiated polyarthritis. This prognostic ability may be related to the very diagnostic performance of these autoantibodies, since RA is a more erosive disease than other forms of arthritis. The present study evaluated an association of antibodies to citrullinated peptides and the rate of joint destruction in patients with a well-established diagnosis of RA. Seventy-one patients with RA were evaluated in 1994 and again in 2002 (functional class, joint count, Health Assessment Questionnaire score, hands X-ray). Autoantibodies (rheumatoid factor (RF), anti-perinuclear factor, anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP)...

Kgatle, Mahlane Godfrey; Flett, Bradley; Truter, Mariette; Ramusi, Moses; Aveling, Theresa A.S..
Alternaria leaf blight (ALB) has been shown in recent years to be one of the major potential disease threats of sunflower capable of causing yield losses in all major production areas. The aim of this study was to determine the causal agent, prevalence and geographical distribution of ALB in the major sunflower production areas of South Africa. Surveys were conducted during 2012/13, 2013/14 and 2014/15 growing seasons at commercial sunflower production fields and at commercial cultivar trials. In the three growing seasons, twenty-nine sunflower commercial production sites were surveyed for ALB disease severity. Furthermore, four cultivars (AGSUN8251, PHB65A25, SY4200 and PAN7049) were surveyed for ALB during cultivar trials in a total of 25 localities...

Effect of Neem Kernel Cake Powder (NKCP) on Fusarium Wilt of Tomato when Used as Soil Amendment JARTS
Kimaru, S. K.; Waudo, S. W.; Monda, E.; Seif, A. A.; Birgen, J. K..
A study was conducted to investigate effect of Neem Kernel Cake Powder (NKCP) at 1.75, 3.5 and 7g rates on development of tomato Fusarium wilt in 1997 at the National Horticultural Research Center, Thika, Kenya. Inoculum density of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici (Sacc.) was two 14mm - diameter disks per planting hole taken from 10 day old cultures growing on PDA. Plant performance was based on shoot height and weight; stem diameter; number and weight of tomato fruits. Disease assessment was based on wilt index of shoots and length of discolouration of vascular tissues. Performance of plants grown in NKCP amended and non-amended soils was significantly (p=0.05) different (33.3 - 93.3%). Disease severity based on the wilt index (0.53-2.87) and length...

Evaluation efficiency of severity of angular leaf spot in common bean based on diseased and healthy leaf area. Repositório Alice
PARRELLA, R. A. da C.; SANTOS, J. B. dos; PARRELLA, N. N. L. D.; SILVA, D. V. F. e.
This study compared severity of angular leaf spot in common bean lines, based on the healthy and diseased leaf area, and the graded scale. We used 12 common bean lines in the dry and rainy seasons. Two contiguous experiments were conducted in each season, with and without chemical control of the pathogen. We evaluated the percentage of the healthy and diseased leaf area; severity based on a graded scale and the area under the disease progress curve; and yield. The diseased or healthy leaf area is efficient to evaluate the severity of angular leaf spot with a sample of 20 to 30 leaflets per plot. For all traits, the results of central and border areas did not differ, indicating that the evaluation of border rows is unnecessary and, finally, the severity...

From visual estimates to fully automated sensor-based measurements of plant disease severity: status and challenges for improving accuracy. Repositório Alice
BOCK, C. H.; BARBEDO, J. G. A.; DEL PONTE, E. M.; BOHNENKAMP, D.; MAHLEIN, A. K..
Abstract. The severity of plant diseases, traditionally the proportion of the plant tissue exhibiting symptoms, is a key quantitative variable to know for many diseases and is prone to error. Good quality disease severity data should be accurate (close to the true value). Earliest quantification of disease severity was by visual estimates. Sensor-based image analysis including visible spectrum and hyperspectral and multispectral sensors are established technologies that promise to substitute, or complement visual ratings. Indeed, these technologies have measured disease severity accurately under controlled conditions but are yet to demonstrate their full potential for accurate measurement under field conditions. Sensor technology is advancing rapidly, and...

Screening of selected brazilian and tanzanian cotton (Gossypium spp.) cultivars for Fusarium wilt resistance. Repositório Alice
FAUSTINE, C.; HOFFMANN, L. V.; TIBAZARWA, F. I.; LUKONGE, E..
Fusarium wilt of cotton caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. vasinfectum Atk. Sny & Hans is one of the major diseases of cotton in Tanzania. Resistant varieties provide useful tools for management of this disease. Varieties developed at Lake Zone Agricultural Research and Development Institute with previous records of resistance are currently susceptible in areas with high level of inoculums warranting the need to search for additional sources of resistance. Further, cotton varieties of Brazil indicate some level of resistance against F. oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum that can be exploited in breeding programmes. In present study, four varieties from Brazil and three from Tanzanian were screened under greenhouse conditions for resistance to Fusarium wilt....

The five concentrations of cell suspension of Bacillus licheniformis BFP011 each applied to reduce the disease symptom caused by Colletotrichum capsici using the detached fruit technique with Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The statistical analysis indicated that inoculation of cell suspension prior to inoculation of C. capsici gave more disease severity reduction than inoculation of C. capsici prior to inoculation of cell suspension. The optimal concentration that reduced disease severity; without adverse effect was at 1x104-1x105 cfu/ml prior to inoculation of C. capsici for 24 hours as disease severity was reduced by 35.8% and 34.8%, respectively. The cell suspension at the concentrations between 1x106 to 1x108 cfu/ml induced fruit rot to 10-50%....
