A thin layer electrochemical cell for disinfection of water contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus BJM
Gusmão,Isabel C. P.; Moraes,Peterson B.; Bidoia,Ederio D..
A thin layer electrochemical cell was tested and developed for disinfection treatment of water artificially contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus. Electrolysis was performed with a low-voltage DC power source applying current densities of 75 mA cm-2(3 A) or 25 mA cm-2 (1 A). A dimensionally stable anode (DSA) of titanium coated with an oxide layer of 70%TiO2 plus 30%RuO2 (w/w) and a 3 mm from a stainless-steel 304 cathode was used in the thin layer cell. The experiments were carried out using a bacteria suspension containing 0.08 M sodium sulphate with chloridefree to determine the bacterial inactivation efficacy of the thin layer cell without the generation of chlorine. The chlorine can promote the formation of trihalomethanes (THM) that are...

Choice of sterilizing/disinfecting agent: determination of the Decimal ReductionTime (D-Value) BJPS
Mazzola,Priscila Gava; Jozala,Angela Faustino; Novaes,Letícia Célia de Lencastre; Moriel,Patricia; Penna,Thereza Christina Vessoni.
Efforts to diminish the transmission of infections include programs in which disinfectants play a crucial role. Hospital surfaces and medical devices are potential sources of cross contamination, and each instrument, surface or area in a health care unit can be responsible for spread of infection. The decimal reduction time was used to study and compare the behavior of selected strains of microorganisms. The highest D-values for various bacteria were obtained for the following solutions: (i) 0.1% sodium dichloroisocyanurate (pH 7.0) - E. coli and A. calcoaceticus (D = 5.9 min); (ii) sodium hypochlorite (pH 7.0) at 0.025% for B. stearothermophilus (D = 24 min), E. coli and E. cloacae (D = 7.5 min); at 0.05% for B. stearothermophilus (D = 9.4 min) and E....

Contamination chimique du milieu marin : de la mesure à l'évaluation des risques ArchiMer
Abarnou, Alain.
This activity report entitled (“Chemical contamination of the marine environment: from measurement to risk assessment”) summarizes the main stages my career at Ifremer from November 1975 to june 2013. The first chapter deals with the seawater chlorination and chlorinated waters released into the sea, the identification and the conditions of the formation of various by-product of these processes. The second chapter concerns PCBs, their nature, their chemical analysis in environmental matrices. PCBs are considered as the best examples of persistant and bioaccumulable compounds and therefore, in all this report they are flagship contaminants to which other groups of studied substances are compared. The third chapter refers to studies performed within marine...

Effects of the electrolytic treatment on Bacillus subtilis BJM
Tolentino-Bisneto,Rodolfo; Bidoia,Ederio D..
Conventional processes of water disinfection can generate toxic composites. It is the case of the trihalomethanes (carcinogenic) formed in the contact of chlorine with organic substances present in the water. The electrolytic treatment can be a substitute for the chlorination process without the need for addition of chemical substances to the process. The effect of the electrolytic treatment using carbon cathode on the viability of the microorganism Bacillus subtilis was tested to determine the death process. By means of electronic microscopy, it was observed that the main cause of the microorganism's death was the cellular lysis due to the electroporation in the cell membrane.

Evaluation of the efficacy of commercial sanitizers against adhered and planktonic cells of Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella spp. Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Carballo,Julia; Araújo,Ana-Belén.
Antimicrobial activities of two commercial disinfectants, alone or combined with heat, against three Salmonella strains and three Listeria monocytogenes strains were studied. The efficacy of disinfectants against planktonic bacteria and bacteria attached to three food contact industrial surfaces (stainless steel, polytetraflourethylene, and rubber) was investigated. The tests were conducted using the sanitizer (quaternary ammonium compounds, and alquyldiethylenediamineglycine and di-alquyldiamineethylglycine) concentrations recommended by the manufacturers, and concentrations twice and four times higher than those values. The recommended concentrations were not effective to kill bacteria, especially when they were attached to surfaces. Concentrations of...

Evaluation of two recommended disinfection methods for cleaning cloths used in food services of southern Brazil BJM
Bartz,Sabrina; Tondo,Eduardo Cesar.
In the State of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Southern Brazil, a good manufacturing practices regulation was published recommending two disinfection methods for cleaning cloths used in food services. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of those methods. Cleaning cloths were sampled without prior notice at food services, on common working days. For the analyses, the cloths were divided in two sub-samples, being one of them microbiologically analyzed. The second sub-sample was further divided in two pieces and submitted to hand washing for two minutes. After that, one piece was boiled in water for 15 min and the other one was soaked in a 200 ppm sodium hypochlorite solution for 15 min. Both pieces of cloth were submitted to microbiological...

ABSTRACT The efficacy of 28 individual or blended disinfectants against avian Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis and Escherichia coli strains was determined. An in vitro test in the presence and absence of serum as source of organic material was conducted. Povidone-iodine (releasing 1% available iodine), 1% potassium permanganate, 70% ethanol, 2% chlorhexidine digluconate and three commercial formulations based on quaternary ammonium compounds + formaldehyde or cresol derivates were the most effective against all strains tested and reduced bacterial counts by more than 106 times (6-log10) regardless of the presence of organic matter. These commercial compounds as well as ethanol and chlorhexidine among the individual substances tested might be...

L'ionisation des produits de la pêche ArchiMer
Kodo, Jean-louis.
Fishes and fishery products are seafoods which have a nutritive value with a high proteins rate. Fishery products ionization has four steps: the radappertization (sterilization of the seafood), the radicidation (destruction of the pathogen germs), the radurization (food conservation and microbial flora reduction), the desinsectization (insects and parasites elimination). Fishery products quality control is very important

Microbiological and physicochemical treatments applied to metallurgic industry aiming water reuse BABT
Bello,Antonio Roberto Crystal; Angelis,Dejanira de Franceschi de; Domingos,Roberto Naves.
A study was conducted on the reuse of the water in a system composed of a sewage treatment plant (STP) using prolonged aeration with activated sludge and a compact water treatment plant (CWTP) in a metallurgic industry. The processes for obtaining the water for reuse were microbiological and physicochemical. The domestic sewage was then pumped to the STP, where biological flocks were formed and clarified water was obtained. The efficiency of the microbiological process in the STP was evaluated for removal of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and sedimentary solids (SS). The efficiency of physicochemical processes for clarifying the water and disinfection was evaluated through analysis of pH, turbidity, color, aerobic...

Probiotic and formaldehyde treatments of Artemia nauplii as food for larval pollack, Pollachius pollachius ArchiMer
Gatesoupe, Joel.
Formaldehyde was used to disinfect Artemia cysts and nauplii, while introducing two probiotics in the enrichment process: Bactocell (Pediococcus acidilactici) and Levucell (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). The disinfectant was selected due to its potential compatibility with probiotics, since it was more effective against Gram-negative bacteria than against lactic acid bacteria and yeast. However, the presence of formaldehyde reduced the intake of P. acidilactici in Artemia. Consequently, the disinfection was stopped before Bactocell supplementation to the nauplii fed to pollack (Pollachius pollachius) larvae. The mean weight of pollack was higher with this probiotic treatment. Growth was even better with the combination of Levucell and Bactocell, but the yeast...

Recommendations for hygiene of masks and circuits in mechanically home ventilated patients BJID
Toussaint,Michel; Reychler,Gregory.
Home mechanical ventilation requires equipment, consisting of a generator of pressure, a tubing and an interface to deliver air to the patient. Instructions for equipment maintenance are generally not based on scientific evidence. Studies however have reported that tubing and masks used at home are the most commonly found as very dirty and contaminated. Dirtiness and contamination of equipment potentially expose patients to a higher risk of airway colonization, which, in turn, should cause respiratory infections. For this reason, published hygiene instructions include the use of disinfectant solution. Nevertheless, they generally fail to explain how basic maintenance may be achieved by simple cleaning with soap and water. The instructions for post-cleaning...

Risk of hepatitis B virus transmission by diagnostic hysteroscopy BJMBR
Santos,N.C.; Pinho,J.R.R.; Lemos,M.F.; Moreira,R.C.; Lopes,C.M.C.; Sacilotto,M.T.J.; Tacla,M.; Pinheiro,W.S.; Ramos,L.O..
Few data are available in the literature concerning the efficacy of standard hysteroscope disinfection procedures to prevent hepatitis B transmission. The aim of the present study was to determine the risk of hepatitis B virus (HBV) transmission during hysteroscopy among anti-HBc-seropositive women. Serum and hysteroscopic samples were collected from 62 women after diagnostic hysteroscopy. All samples were tested for serologic HBV markers. Polymerase chain reactions (PCR) were carried out to amplify regions C and S of the viral genome and only samples amplified by both pairs of primers were considered to be positive. Anti-HBc was repeatedly reactive in 48 (77%) of 62 serum samples, and HBsAg was detected in 8 (13%). At least one HBV serologic marker was...

Selection of bacteria enhancing the growth rate of axenically hatched rotifers (<i>Brachionus plicatilis</i>) OMA
Rombaut, G.; Dhert, P.; Vandenberghe, J.; Verschuere, L.; Sorgeloos, P.; Verstraete, W..
The effect of bacterial strains on the growth rate of rotifers, Brachionus plicatilis, was determined under monoxenic conditions. The first objective was to obtain sterile rotifer cultures starting from rotifer resting eggs using merthiolate or glutaraldehyde as disinfectant. Sterile rotifer cultures were obtained, without affecting the hatching ability of the resting eggs, when 0.05 µl/l glutaraldehyde was used. This disinfection procedure was used to examine the effect of 20 bacterial strains, isolated from well-performing live-feed production systems, on the population growth rate of rotifers cultured under monoxenic conditions. Five out of the 20 bacterial strains tested were able to improve significantly the asexual reproduction of rotifers. The...

Spatio-temporal patterns of perkinsosis in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum from Arcachon Bay (SW France) ArchiMer
Dang, Cecile; De Montaudouin, Xavier; Caill-milly, Nathalie; Trumbic, Zeljka.
Pathogens belonging to the genus Perkinsus infect many bivalve molluscan species around the world, including the Manila clam Ruditapes phihppinarum. We investigated the spatial distribution of this parasite at 34 stations throughout Arcachon Bay (SW France). Prevalence of perkinsosis was 93% and mean infection abundance was 96 x 10(3) cells g(-1) wet gill. Lowest mean abundances were found close to the Leyre River mouth and a significant negative correlation was observed between mean abundance and salinity. Perkinsosis was rare at the oceanic site where salinities and other environmental parameters were stable. A second aim of this study was to survey perkinsosis during annual cycles at 4 sites within Arcachon Bay. Prevalence and intensities (+/-SE) of the...

Sporothrix schenckii in a hospital and home environment in the city of Pelotas/RS - Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Mattei,Antonella S.; Madrid,Isabel M.; Santin,Rosema; Silva,Franklin V.; Carapeto,Luiz P.; Meireles,Mário C.A..
This study describes the isolation of S. schenckii in hospital and home environments in Brazil. Samples were collected from surfaces of a veterinary service place and at home. S. schenckii was detected in 1.5% of the samples from the hospital environment. However, this fungus was isolated from all sampled areas in home environments. The isolation of S. schenckii deonstrates that these surfaces could act as infection sources to anials and huans. Therefore, employees and pet owners could be exposed to this agent, and the contamination, through surfaces, could occur through the traumatic inoculation of the fungus or by direct contact with pre-existing lesions.
