First report of the occurrence of Ophiocordyceps melolonthae (Ascomycota: Hypocreales: Ophiocordycipitaceae) in larvae of Diloboderus abderus Sturm (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae) in Brazil Biota Neotropica
Salgado-Neto,Geraldo; Valmorbida,Ivair; Guedes,Jerson Vanderlei Carús; Blume,Elena.
This note is the first report on the infection of Diloboderus abderus Sturm (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae) larvae by the fungusOphiocordyceps melolonthae (Hypocreales: Ophiocordycipitaceae) in subtropical Brazil. Identification was made possible by extraction and sequencing of the fungal DNA that was covering the larvae’s mouthparts, prothorax, cuticle, and digestive tract (alimentary canal). Amplification, sequencing and comparison of the ITS region of the ribosomal DNA with voucher sequences of GenBank were performed and were 95% similar to Ophiocordyceps melolonthae. The fungus is an entomopathogen which attacks Melolonthidae larvae, having scientific and economic importance because of the need for increased knowledge on its distribution and on...

Fusarium oxysporum dispersion by larvae of Cyclocephala modesta, Dyscinetus gagates and Diloboderus abderus in Brazil Ciência Rural
Salgado-Neto,Geraldo; Vaz,Marcos André Braz; Guedes,Jerson Vanderlei Carús; Muniz,Marlove Fátima Brião; Blume,Elena.
ABSTRACT: The scientific and economic importance of soybean root rot justifies the study of this disease, especially the role of insects as dispersers in the spread of root pathogens. The objective was to identify and evaluate qualitatively and quantitatively the role of Cyclocephala modesta, Dyscinetus gagatesand Diloboderus abderus(Coleoptera: Melolonthidae) in the dispersion of root pathogens in cultivated fields. The fungi were identified to the species level with DNA extraction and sequencing of these organisms within Melolonthidae larvae. Larvae were dissected and separated into the parts: mouth parts, prothorax, cuticle and digestive tract (alimentary canal). The Internal Transcribed Spacer region of the rRNA was amplified and compared to sequences...

Rapid PCR-based assay for Sclerotinia sclerotiorum detection on soybean seeds Scientia Agricola
Grabicoski,Edilaine Mauricia Gelinski; Jaccoud Filho,David de Souza; Pileggi,Marcos; Henneberg,Luciane; Pierre,Marcelo Luiz Cunha; Vrisman,Cláudio Mauricio; Dabul,Audrei Nisio Gebieluca.
Caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, white mold is an important seed-transmitted disease of soybean (Glycine max). Incubation-based methods available for the detection and quantification of seed-borne inoculum such as the blotter test, paper roll and Neon-S assay are time-consuming, laborious, and not always sensitive. In this study, we developed and evaluated a molecular assay for the detection of S. sclerotiorum in soybean seeds using a species-specific PCR (polymerase chain reaction) primer set and seed soaking (without DNA extraction) for up to 72 h. The PCR products were amplified in all the samples infected with the pathogen, but not in the other samples of plant material or the other seed-borne fungi DNA. The minimum amount of DNA detected was 10 pg,...

Reaction of weeds, found in vegetable production areas, to root-knot nematodes Meloidogyne incognita and M. enterolobii Horticultura Brasileira
Pinheiro,Jadir B; Silva,Giovani Olegario da; Biscaia,Danielle; Macedo,Amanda G; Correia,Núbia Maria.
ABSTRACT Root-knot nematodes cause great damage to vegetable crops in Brazil, besides having a large range of host plants, such as weeds. Weeds can maintain the inoculums or even favor the multiplication of these nematodes. In this study we evaluated the reaction of selected weed species, present in a vegetable production area, to root-knot nematodes Meloidogyne incognita and M. enterolobii. The trials were conducted in a greenhouse at Embrapa Hortaliças, Brasília-DF, in a completely randomized design with six replicates. Fifteen weed species were evaluated for M. incognita race 1, and 16 weed species were evaluated for M. enterolobii. Two tomato cultivars were evaluated as resistance and susceptibility standards. Gall index (IG), egg mass index (IMO),...

The Partnership and Network Strategy AgEcon
Clark, Richard A..
The theory and practice of sustainable improvement and innovation partnerships and networks design and management can be enhanced in agricultural industries. The BPP project can contribute to enhanced real-world practices, and the research and development of better mechanisms, for the design and management of innovation partnerships and networks. The Partnership and Network Strategy is designed to accelerate the rate, scale and impact of valuable improvements and innovations in the beef industry by involving key players in the industry and ensuring support for all partners.

The use of participatory processes in wide-scale dissemination of micro dosing and conservation agriculture in Zimbabwe AgEcon
Pedzisa, Tarisayi; Minde, Isaac J.; Twomlow, Steve.
Participatory technology development has been used for quite some time. However, little is known about how farmers perceive participatory methods and processes. Understanding farmers’ concerns about the participatory process can be an important starting point and can further the ultimate aim of encouraging sustained technology adoption. An ex-post participatory technology development and transfer evaluation was carried out in Zimbabwe in 2006/07 involving 231 farmers. It was revealed that use of demonstration trials encouraged the most participation and subsequent adoption and adaptation of the technologies to suit specific needs. The participatory nature of the process encouraged greater knowledge sharing among farmers and gave them more confidence in the...

White grub (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae) mortality induced by Ophiocordyceps melolonthae Ciência Rural
Salgado-Neto,Geraldo; Vaz,Marcos Braz; Guedes,Jerson Vanderlei Carús.
ABSTRACT: The occurrence of white grub roots in soybean crops in the South of Brazil has gradually increased. However, there is not information on the biological control of grubs by entomopathogenic fungi. This study aimed to induce infection by Ophiocordyceps melolonthae and analyze longevity in Cyclocephala modesta and Dyscinetus gagates larvae (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae). In the laboratory, Cyclocephala modesta and Dyscinetus gagates had a mortality rate of 85% and 75%, respectively.
