A retrospective study of canine cutaneous food allergy at a Veterinary Teaching Hospital from Jaboticabal, São Paulo, Brazil Ciência Rural
Rondelli,Mariana Cristina Hoeppner; Oliveira,Michele Cristina de Camargo; Silva,Flavio Lopes da; Palacios Junior,Reinaldo Juan Garrido; Peixoto,Mayara Corrêa; Carciofi,Aulus Cavalieri; Tinucci-Costa,Mirela.
Cutaneous food allergy is an adverse immunological response, triggered by antigenic dietary components that may escape the digestion process and are absorbed intact through the gastrointestinal mucosa. In Brazil, there are only a few reports on cutaneous food allergy and antigenicity of food components used in pet food production. Thus, the aim of this report was to assess and describe data from medical records of canine patients diagnosed with cutaneous food allergy at a Veterinary Teaching Hospital from Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil, in order to evaluate epidemiological and clinical aspects related to this skin problem. From 2007 to 2012, 29 dogs received the diagnosis of cutaneous food allergy after an eight-week hypoallergenic elimination trial. Among them,...

A weight loss protocol and owners participation in the treatment of canine obesity Ciência Rural
Carciofi,Aulus Cavalieri; Gonçalves,Karina Nogueira Venturelli; Vasconcellos,Ricardo Souza; Bazolli,Rodrigo Sousa; Brunetto,Márcio Antonio; Prada,Flávio.
The success of a weight loss program for pets depends on the owners collaboration. Their compliance is fundamental in establishing the correct food management. The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of a weight loss program in two groups of dogs, one maintained under experimental conditions and the other with their owners. The same hypocaloric food was used to feed all animals, the amount being restricted to 60% of the estimated maintenance energy requirement for a 15% reduction of the present body weight of the dog. The animals were followed during 90 days. A standard questionnaire was used to study the owners' perception of obesity and its treatment. The protocol and the diet were found to be effective. The control dogs had an...

The relinquishment of animals is frequent and common throughout all the Latin America, causing losses in the areas of public health, social, ecological, economic and animal welfare. Among the main causes of pet relinquishment are behavioral problems, lack of space in houses, the lifestyle of the owner, lack of information about the owner responsibilities and costs associated with the keeping of animals. The number of laws related to animal welfare has been growing, due to pressure from the civil population but abandoned animals are a problem of responsibility of all the society. The role of the veterinarian is to inform and educate their customers about the topic. Reduce the relinquishment animal is a public challenge with cultural and long-term solution,...

Gouveia,E.M.M.F.; Silva,I.S.; Nakazato,G.; Onselem,V.J.V.; Corrêa,R.A.C.; Araujo,F.R.; Chang,M.R..
The therapeutic action of phosphorylated mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) was investigated regarding its prebiotic activity on enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC). Diarrhea was induced in dogs by experimental infection with EPEC strains. Then MOS was supplied once a day, in water for 20 days. Immunological (IgA and IgG), hematological (lymphocytes, neutrophils and monocytes) and bacteriological variables (PCR detection of the eae gene of EPEC recovered from stool culture), as well as occurrence of diarrhea were evaluated. All strains caused diarrhea at 24, 48 and 72 h after infection. PCR results indicated that E. coli isolated from stool culture of all infected animals had the eae gene. There was no significant difference among groups as to number of...

Adiponectin serum levels in female dogs bearing mammary gland carcinomas Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Souza,I.B.R.; Cardoso,C.V.; Pereira,A.A.F.; Poppe,S.C.; Bondan,E.F..

Anatomo-pathological and epidemiological analysis of urinary tract lesions in dogs Ciência Rural
Sapin,Carolina da Fonseca; Silva-Mariano,Luisa Cerqueira; Bassi,Jordana Nunes; Grecco,Fabiane Borelli.
ABSTRACT: In dogs, diseases of the urinary tract are common and can be caused by disorders of varied etiology. The objective of this study was to classify qualitatively and quantitatively urinary tract lesions of 363 dogs, which were classified according to its anatomical distribution and etiology. The data was obtained from the revision of 36 years of protocols from the Regional Laboratory of Diagnosis (LRD/UFPel) and it represents 4.0% of diagnoses from a total of 8980 for that period and species. Renal injury accounted for 93.1% of cases, with 309 being primary kidney lesions; from which the main lesions were the tubulointerstitial nephritis (142 cases) often associated with Leptospirosis (47). Injuries of lower urinary tract accounted for 6.9% of the...

Anti-leishmania antibodies in cerebrospinal fluid from dogs with visceral leishmaniasis BJMBR
Lima,V.M.F.; Gonçalves,M.E.; Ikeda,F.A.; Luvizotto,M.C.R.; Feitosa,M.M..
Visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil is caused by Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi and the dog is its most important reservoir. The clinical features in dogs include loss of weight, lymphadenopathy, renal failure, skin lesions, fever, hypergammaglobulinemia, hepatosplenomegaly, anemia, and, rarely, neurological symptoms. Most infected animals develop active disease, characterized by high anti-leishmania antibody titers and depressed lymphoproliferative ability. Antibody production is not primarily important for protection but might be involved in the pathogenesis of tissue lesions. An ELISA test was used to determine if there is an association between neurological symptoms and the presence of anti-L. chagasi antibodies in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Thirty serum...

Assessment of left atrial function in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease by biplane simpson’s method Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Coelho,M.R.; Muzzi,R.A.L.; Abreu,C.B.; Schulien,T.; Muzzi,L.A.L.; Oliveira,L.E.D.; Cherem,M..
ABSTRACT The relationship between the diameter of the left atrium (LA) and aorta (Ao) is considered as a prognostic factor in chronic mitral valve disease. As the left atrium is a three-dimensional structure, methods based on measurement of the chamber volume can be more accurate than linear methods. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of measuring LA volume with 2D echocardiography using the biplane modified Simpson (SIMP) method in 33 dogs with various classes of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD), as well as to present values of LA function using the atrial diastolic and systolic volume indices (ADVI and ASVI), cardiac index (ACI) and atrial ejection fraction (AEF). We observed agreement among the LA/Ao ratio and the atrial volume...

Assessment of ultrasonographic and endoscopic changes in dogs with gastrointestinale disorders Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Malancus,R.N.; Malancus,C.M. Tofan.
ABSTRACT The study has been conducted over a period of 4 years, on a total number of 133 dogs, all of those expressing gastrointestinal disorders. Ultrasound and endoscopic examinations were performed in all dogs in order to assess any significant correlations between ultrasonographic and endoscopic findings. The results confirm a significant correlation between the presence of diarrhoea and increased thickness of the large bowel wall, with P<0.5. Another extremely significant correlation we observed is the one between increased thickness of large bowel wall and loss of layering at this level, with P<0.5. Upper GI endoscopy revealed that dilated lacteals in the duodenum are significantly associated with the presence of diarrhoea, P<0.5 and, more...

Bothrops alternatus ENVENOMING IN YOUNG DOGS J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
PEREZ,O. A. DE; KOSCINCZUK,P.; FLINTA,S. M.; MAIDANA,H. R.; SANCHEZ NEGRETTE,M..
Bothrops alternatus venom was intramuscularly inoculated (3 mg/kg) into 12 dogs, 30 to 65 days old. Spontaneous bleeding commenced twenty minutes later. Blood samples obtained 3 and 20 minutes after venom inoculation presented spontaneous clotting formation. Plasmatic fibrinogen decreased within 3 minutes. Partial thromboplastin time (PTT) and one-stage prothrombin time (PT) were found. Plasma did not coagulate 40 minutes after inoculation. Platelet counts did not vary but their function was altered. Histopathology pointed out severe muscular necrosis and massive hemorrhage in the inoculation area. Regional ganglia showed intense hemorrhage. The 45 and 65-day-old animals showed alveolar thickening of the septum and generalized congestion, but the...

Botulism in non-ruminants in Brazil Ciência Rural
Oliveira Júnior,Carlos Augusto de; Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Olinda,Roberio Gomes; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
ABSTRACT: Botulism is an intoxication caused by the ingestion of neurotoxins secreted by Clostridium botulinum and characterized by progressive flaccid symmetrical paralysis. Among non-ruminant animals, avian species and dogs are the most commonly affected by botulism, while horses and pigs are less-commonly diagnosed with the disease. Despite the importance of this disease in animals, the Brazilian literature only includes case studies and outbreak descriptions. The aim of this study was to review the main features and to provide recent data on the occurrence of botulism in non-ruminants in Brazil.

Brucella spp. isolation from dogs from commercial breeding kennels in São Paulo state, Brazil BJM
Keid,Lara B.; Soares,Rodrigo M.; Morais,Zenaide M.; Richtzenhain,Leonardo J.; Vasconcellos,Sílvio A..
Dogs from 12 commercial breeding kennels were submitted to clinical investigation and laboratorial tests for diagnosis of Brucella spp. infection. The sampling was carried out between April 2000 and February 2002 and the laboratorial tests employed were agar gel immunediffusion test (AGID) and blood culture. From 171 dogs examinated, 39 (22.8%) showed at least one clinical sign compatible with brucellosis, 58 (33.91%) were AGID positive and 24 (14.03%) were positive by blood culture. Gram negative bacterial cells with a biochemical pattern compatible with that of bacteria belonging to genus Brucella were isolated from blood specimens of 24 animals. According to Kappa index and McNemar test, the association between AGID and blood culture (k=0.360 with 95%...

Can Dogs Alleviate the Desolation Created by Having Fewer Children? An Empirical Study in the Japanese Context OAK
Kawata, Yukichika.
Over the last several decades, in Japan, the young population (YP; less than 14 years old) has decreased whereas the number of registered dogs (RDs) has increased as a result of various socioeconomic factors. The total sum of YP and RD has remained virtually constant since the early 1990s. In this paper, we employ veterinary economics analyses to empirically examine the following hypothesis: the decrease in the number of children being reared has been compensated for by the increase in the number of pets. We find a statistically significant relationship between RD and the total fertility rate, which confirms that our hypothesis is valid in the case of Japan.

Canine distemper: epidemiological findings of 250 cases Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
HEADLEY,Selwyn Arlington; GRAÇA,Dominguita Lühers.
A review of the number of dogs submitted for necropsy at the Department of Veterinary Pathology of the Federal University of Santa Maria, RS, between 1985-1997 has shown that 11.7% (250/2136) had lesions and inclusion bodies characteristic of infection by canine distemper virus (CDV). Most of these cases occurred during the winter months in dogs that were less than 1.5 year old, which were submitted by residents from the city of Santa Maria. Canine distemper is considered endemic in this city. Significant differences in susceptibility were not observed between males and females. Mongrel dogs were super-represented, but dolichocephalic breeds were more affected than brachycephalic ones. Distemper encephalopathy with typical CDV inclusion bodies, especially...
